My love affair with the sky

image from canada-maps.org

Growing up with the Northern Lights dancing over us, I assumed everyone carried on a love affair with the sky.

I soon learned that not every place I’d live would afford an easy view of the horizon.

I soon learned that not everyone’s sky was painted like mine.

When my father died, and I was on a plane headed home, I remember the pilot announcing how we’d just crossed into Canadian airspace.  I leaned into my window and spotted something in the distance.  A smile touched my lips when I realized what was with me: the Northern lights … twinkling and a-winkin’, as if to say, “Welcome home, girl.”

It was that very moment – when my emotions were the most raw – that I was given another example of how we are never really …  all alone.

  1. Growing up in N.Idaho we had very little showing of northern lights activity. Nothing spectacular, just some greenish/bluish movement now and then.
Out this way it’s a little different!
Did you see them few weeks ago? I think it was Monday the 17th and I heard they were seen as far south as VA. Never have I ever seen them so amazing. All red, green, blue, white. Wow. Tried to photograph but my camera was all fiddled up with hockey arena settings and I couldn’t get it back to “normal”. I gave up before I missed it all and just sat on the deck in a blanket and watched. Looking forward to next time.

    • I missed them here in MI a few weeks ago; I must have been asleep. They are spectacular … you were smart to just sit back and enjoy!!

  2. Thank you for sharing this gorgeous phenomenon. Alas…we live too far south to view. Keep us posted. I don’t we could tire of these beautiful photos.

  3. I’ve never seen them either. Maybe one day: when I visit Dee (The View Out Here), I’ll witness them in person!

  4. great pic!

  5. Thanks for sharing. I love that first image. I can see it framed. Just gorgeous.

  6. Wow! I wonder how many people even look at the sky anymore. With all of the internet and games for kids competing for attention, has the visually stunninng effects of nature gotten lost? This is a beautiful reminder to look up to the heavens once in a while. Thanks MJ!

    • Thank you; I couldn’t agree more. Just last night, I stepped out into the frosty air to check out the stars … they were magical and oh so bright!

      Cheers to you ~ MJ

  7. Beautiful in every way.
