Consider

“People aren’t either wicked or noble. They’re like chef’s salads, with good things and bad things chopped and mixed together in a vinaigrette of confusion and conflict.”
Lemony Snicket, The Grim Grotto

I read this quote a few days ago and -BAM- two scenarios of conflict and confusion played out right before me.

It helped to have read this.

Why?

It gave me a reference point for understanding.

Has life ever served you chef’s salad?

  1. Guess it’s like the old saying that there’s good in everyone; sometimes it’s just more difficult to find!
Thanks for sharing that quote – it’s perfect!

    • Yes – a good reminder when you’re faced with a cantankerous or demanding personality. Even if I never know the reason behind it, I do think to myself, “Why?” “What’s going on here that I just can’t see?” Cheers! MJ

  2. Interesting analogy. I’ve noticed some folks leave the parts they don’t like on the side of the plate…I eat the whole thing! :)

  3. LIfe is one perpetual chef salad! It’s all mixed up and tasty, nonetheless.
    Hugs,
    Kathy

  4. This is a great analogy! Thanks for sharing! ~ Sheila

  5. BobG

Yep, and way too often there has been extra vinaigrette on the side.

  6. I can’t stop looking at the food image…what were you saying?
Still laughing at BobG’s comment! lol
    Food for thought, MJ.

  7. Every day. Usually at work. This quote describes that daily conflict SO well.

But it leaves me HUNGRY! :-)

  8. I like the quote, but the good to me almost always outweighs the bad, thankfully!

  9. I’m always saying ‘that was good because…but it was bad because…but then that was good….’ – which is what I thought of with this post. Most things in my life seem to a huge chef’s salad of sweet lettuce and sour pickles. But it’s interesting! Thanks for reminding us MJ!

  10. Absolutely… And sometimes it shows up with the wrong dressing!
