Time for a closet makeover?

photo from tlc.com

“Your closet should contain 3 categories of clothing: clothes you love, clothes that fit you now, and clothes that garner you compliments whenever you wear them.”  Peter Walsh, organizational expert.

My first response when I heard this quote was, “Wow my closet would be much more spacious if I applied this rule!”

Then I got to thinking:

How many items do I have in my closet that were “price-driven” (Items I’ve never worn but were purchased because they were on sale.)

How many items do I have that don’t fit me now and are stark reminders of a size I wore… ten years ago?  Those little(r) clothes are like playground bullies who taunt me of my insecurities every time I open the closet. They are not motivators, no, to the contrary.  They make me feel badly.

Add in the abundance of boring clothes that evoke a feeling of blah when I look at them or put them on.  I think I can count 8 items that I love or get compliments on.  There’s maybe 6 that fit me really well right now.

The same rule applies to shoes – there are the corporate heels that I never need in my job, cute sandals that hurt my feet when I wear them and, again, impractical shoes bought because they were on sale.

I’m fighting a bug and don’t have the energy to do this anytime soon but .. as soon as I feel better .. I’m finding some trash bags and am going through my closet with these rules in mind: one bag can go to Goodwill, the other to the trash.

I can’t wait to see what the back of my closet looks like!   I can’t wait to use my Christmas gift cards on well fitting clothes that flatter my Jessica Rabbit-ness, not hide it.  Clothes full of my favorite colors – purple, raspberry, turquoise and sapphire.

How about you?

If you applied this to your closet today, what would be left?

    Jessica Rabbit-ness???? Yum….
My clothes closet has just one type…clothes I like that make me feel good. I know, it’s supposedly “easier” for guys…

    • JR on a good day and Edith Bunker other days = ha! Cooper you have it right, and that is my goal, to one day have a closet full of clothes that only make me feel fab! Thanks for visiting, MJ

  2. Uh. I might actually get to see my clothes if that were to happen to my closet. Not saying that my wife has too many clothes (er, cough, grunt).

I hope you get to feeling better soon so you can go on the adventure of finding the back of your closet…maybe you should write a story about the adventure…hmmm. 🙂

    • The Hubbs is really good at cleaning things out and throwing things away… me? Not so much. But .. having a goal and a strategy should surely help. Thanks for the kind wishes HL1981!
