Where’s the beef?

A California lawsuit claims that fast food giant Taco Bell is NOT serving 100% beef and that instead they use a meat mixture containing “binders” and “extenders.” The suit claims that this combination doesn’t meet requirements set up by the USDA to be called beef.

“What’s for dinner, Mom?”

“NearlyBeefaroni!”

   Huh?

“Beef-kinda-sortanoff”

 Come again?

“Beef…almost-fredo”

Sigh.

Taco Bell countersued saying their seasoned beef contains “88 percent USDA-inspected beef and the rest is water, spices and a mixture of oats, starch and other ingredients that contribute to the “quality” its product.” The company said it uses no extenders. Um … I don’t even know what an “extender” is, do you?  I do know this: I don’t want to know.

Let’s not even discuss the makings of a chicken nugget.

  1. Before all this went down did you really think that the meat at Taco Bell was 100% pure beef? If you eat at Taco Bell something tells me you aren’t that concerned about what is in the taco or burrito or Mexican Pizza!

    • No, BJ, I’m fairly certain it wasn’t … same can be said for the rest of the fast food chains. It’s one of those “what do you expect for $0.89” situations! 🙂 Thanks for stopping in .. MJ

  2. The more conscious I become of what I’m putting in my mouth, the less appealing any of the fast food choices become. But honestly, even as much as I’ve always known fast food wasn’t good for me, I never thought the meats contained “extenders.” No, I don’t want any more detail either. I already know enough to know I won’t be frequenting places like Taco Bell anymore.

    • Terri, I’m with you .. I think consciousness has to be what’s needed. The other thing people need to consider when we hear claims of “100% real beef” is to realize that it might be all beef but does it containt parts you want to eat? Chickens weren’t born with nuggets — and there’s parts of a beef cow that I don’t want blended in with my meal. Another reason we eat at home more often than not = I know what’s in it. 🙂
Thanks for stopping in and your comments. Extenders = shudder!

  3. I lovingly refer to Taco Bell as Taco Hell. Gross me out. Right up there with hot dogs…or pig parts as I like to call them. Extenders gives a new meaning to disgusting. Thanks for that.

    • Hiya Coach Beth .. Hot dogs are a food from my childhood.. memories of weinie roasts are happy ones but I made a conscious decision to stop eating those ~20 yrs ago. “Whole ____” doesn’t necessarily mean parts I’d choose to eat… ick phooey. Thanks for weighing in, MJ
