Let it go

“Holding onto a grievance or a resentment is like drinking poison and thinking it will kill your enemy.” – Nelson Mandela

Let it go.

Holding on to it … becoming friends and partners with past hurts?

That’s a burden far heavier on you than the person who first put it there.

We all have baggage; let’s resolve to only have carry-on.

A Mother’s Advice

Mom & me enjoying a Killian's Irish Red at Waxy O'Shea's Irish Pub, Branson MO

“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it’s a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.” — Erma Bombeck

So, as I often do, I called my Mom last night.  She’s recovering from a fairly serious fall and is healing at home. In her words though, “I’m fine. I’ve got my books, hockey, my newspapers, your brother, sister-in-law and sister are in and out of here doing things for me all the time. It’s all good and I have nothing to complain about!”  It was snowing and blowing and -30 C where she lives.

Before I could comment on the cold (and how thankful I am that she has the good sense not to go out in it) she reminded me of the chicken coop on the farm.  Continue reading

25 Random Things

image from taxgreegold.co.uk

 25 Randoms about Emjayandthem:

  1. Old people make me smile. I enjoy it when an old fella stops me in the grocery store to tell me a joke .. I know that this moment was his one moment of the day to tell someone his little story. His wife is sick of hearing the same joke over and over so he makes up a reason to go to the store and find someone to tell his story to … people just want to be heard, and I love it when they choose me.
  2. Our boys make my heart sing; seeing them fill the doorway, leaving me voice messages that say “love ya mom” and being warmly embraced by either one of them (who both tower over me by about 20 feet) just make my heart melt.
  3. I’m patriotic. “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful” make me cry. Every time. “O Canada” (except for the French parts which I’ve forgotten) does as well. I landed in the U.S. with $178 and a guitar and I’m so grateful for what I’ve been able to learn, who I’ve met, and the life we’ve created. Being a dual citizen, how cool is that?
  4. Black licorice is my favorite childhood candy.
  5. The hubbs makes me laugh. There’s something extremely sexy about a man who can laugh with you and at you. He’s also a very good listener. We don’t always agree, and sometimes he can be a bonehead (so can I) but he’s perfect for me. He challenges me and doesn’t put up with any gibberish b.s. from anyone, even me! I like that. He’s also strong, smart, brave, loyal, thoughtful, sentimental, and tender-hearted. He’s the kind of man your mother would wish on you … and mine did.
  6. I like the wind and the feel of it on my face:  it reminds me of my childhood home on the prairies. I could never live in the woods as I get claustrophobic if I can’t see the horizon. Continue reading

My dog is an Accountant

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

If you think your dog can’t count, try putting 3 treats in your pocket and only giving him 2.

Not only can our dog count, we’re pretty sure he’s an accountant. He keeps careful inventory of the Scooby Snacks, the chipmunk and squirrel population and exactly how many bratwurst remain on the grill.  He’s impeccably mannered, and has his timing thoughtfully planned out: when we sit down to eat, he hops into his bed and crosses his paws.  Usually this is accompanied by a small sigh, or a “look away.”  He does this knowing full well that, at the end of the meal, he will get a bite of something mixed in with his kibbles.  All he wants is a little of what we’re having as he is, after all, a pack animal.  He’s learned by experience, and with 10+ years of it, this dog has our habits down pat.

C’mon Get Happy!

Hello world there’s a song that I’m singing .. c’mon get HAPPY!!!

I know what you’re thinking and no, I’m not on anything.

I’m just happy to be here. Seriously.

It’s a choice .. a choice I try to make every day: to embrace my life and all who are in it.

Before you think oh-my-God-she’s-one-of-those-perky-annoying-Polyanna-types-that-needs-a-big-fat-can-of-“Shut-the-hell-up!”  let me assure you that I am not.  I can be just as much of a naysayer as anyone. I just try not to be. And most of the time, I succeed at it.

This shift occurred 25 years ago; I was 22 years old and 8 months pregnant with my first baby.. off to the OB Doc for a check-up (by myself, but I digress) when I was hit from the side by another driver.  Totaled the car and nearly totaled me: fractured my spine and left me with partial Continue reading

PolkaDotTeapot at 23

image from emmabridgewater.co.uk

Aside from the creative outlet blogging affords me, one of the things I’ve most enjoyed is the variety of writers and posts being shared with the world on www.wordpress.com.  I should have done this sooner, but this particular post will be the first that I push you all to consider reading.   What an interesting and eclectic bunch we are: people who just want to share what we’re thinking with others.  People who have a desire to be heard. It’s universal, gender-neutral, and without borders.

In the post below, PolkaDotTeapot, 23, shares her thoughts on 20 things she knows for sure.  I love posts like this: they not only inspire  a meandering range of thoughts and ideas in me, they also transport me back to when I was 23 and had varying ideas and opinions…but no forum like www.wordpress.com in which to share them.

Enjoy!

Why not?

If you don’t ask for what you want, the answer is already no.

Why not ask?

Maybe the answer will be …

YES?

A relationship worth cultivating

Eaton’s girls photo from archives.gov.on.ca

“The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself.  And if you find someone to love the ‘you’ you love, well, that’s just fabulous.” ~ Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City

Ok, I know that a screenwriter penned those words for the character known as Miss Carrie Bradshaw but I still think they’re profound.

As a young girl, my mother did her best to stress the importance of accepting myself exactly as I was. She spoke lovingly of her late mother, my Nana, and Nana’s beautiful sisters, who were so polished and poised that they were often referred to as “Eaton’s girls.”  (Eaton’s was a national fashion department store in Canada, and Eaton’s girls were the prettiest of the pretty).   Mom made it clear to my sisters and I that we stood on the shoulders of industrious and intelligent women; women who were feminine, clever, practical and lovely. Just like me. Imagine the impact of such words on a developing and awkward young girl? Continue reading

What getting sick taught me

I picked up a juicy little flu bug the day after Christmas and it’s systematically kicked my tail for 2 weeks – 2-whole-weeks.  Geez.

I’m on the mend (thank you GOD for antibiotics) and there now exist blocks of time where I’m no longer coughing up frogs.  Yay for that.

10 things I learned from being sick: Continue reading

**2010 in review**

I’ve been remiss in checking my email so imagine my surprise to find this nifty note from the Word Press people summarizing my little blog’s activities in 2010.  I admit it – I’m a stats girl. I just love me some spreadsheets, charts and graphs.  I’ve enjoy tracking everything from party RSVPs to miles walked. (I’m a little weird that way,  I know).  So having the analysis carefully prepared for me shazam – that get’s my attention!

More than anything else though, this summary provides me with both a look back Continue reading
