Redefining Snow Days

What the dog saw (an emjayandthem photo)

12.9 inches of snow overnight and it’s still coming down here in West Michigan.  Thankfully, the howling North-easterly winds have stopped.  I didn’t sleep all that well because I kept waking up to see if the power was still on.  Frankie the dog snored happily and seems ever-so-rested.  Our 17-year-old is still tucked in and the only sounds coming from his end of the house are sighs, snores and creaks of the mattress when he rolls over.

School was cancelled last night via an automated recorded phone call.   When I was a kid, school was rarely cancelled. Instead our bus driver, a local farmer, would call each of the 12 families on his route and politely inform them that it was too cold and the bus wouldn’t start.  Back to bed we went!

Oh how snow days have changed.

Now, because we still have power, I am working from home: I’m slogging through three corporate projects via my laptop and dialing in to conference calls.  I’m also working AT home .. meaning I’m doing laundry, soaking dishes, and have put a roast in the oven.

Gone are my snow days of slipping back under the covers and sleeping the morning away.   The only way I’d get that is IF we lost power, and that is definitely not on my wish list.  Plus, since the hubbs is travelling today,  as the resident adult, I’d have to be awake to stoke the fire.   Pioneer woman? Not so much.

But .. there’s a definite trade-off that is pretty wonderful:  my hair’s in a pony tail, I’m dressed in yoga pants & fleece and old dog is happily snoozing at foot.   I can stop and watch the snow, take a picture here and there and refill my coffee at any time …and I can take a break and catch up on morning TV if I choose to.

Come to think of it …this kinda does feel like a snow day. Without the sleep part.

How about you? Were you impacted by the blizzard of 2011?
