Purposeful Nothingness

the 'Northern Lights' .. a must add to any bucket list

An absence of schedule.

Lack of obligation.

No particular place to be.

Naps.

No socks, no clocks, no dress code ….

Instead …. frogs singing me to sleep and songbirds chirping in my ear at daybreak, cups of really strong coffee… with cream. No skim, 2% or Flavoring … cream.  Old dog snoozing happily in the porch.   Too many books, watermelon for breakfast followed by a dip in the pool.  Sunscreen, steak marinating, and cherries from the fruit stand up the road.  Oscillating fans, screen doors, pool floaties and tan lines.  Skirts, heels, lip gloss and painted toes.   Linen shorts, baseball on the radio and supper on the patio … Tee times, bug spray, Tank tops, flip flops, and summer rains.   Grilling out with Roy Orbison, Elvis and Tom Petty at the water’s edge.   Windows open, daylight lingering…  and a firefly’s dance within reach.  Barbeque sauce, summer salads, and happy hour with friends.

Every year, the hubbs and I take 1 week off to do all of  the above …and this year?

It starts this afternoon. 🙂

How ’bout you? Any vacay plans on the horizon?

  1. I LOVE this post! You took me back to summertime years ago.
Hope you & your hubby have a wonderful vacay!

We have a vacation planned in a couple of weeks, but haven’t put the final touches on it yet.

    • Thank you, Dianna … it’s my attempt at capturing all that I hope to do (and not do … lots of “easy” time coming my way). It’s muggy & cloudy today, but the sun is supposed to pop through later … regardless .. after this afternoon, I’m on the “no plan plan.” Cheers! MJ

  2. I think you have it covered. Cherries? Yum…We don’t have them. : ( Just finished blueberries and peaches are coming in July. : )
☼ Going to the lake next week.
    Don’t know if there’s wi-fi yet.
    I may be absent.

    • Michigan is the cherry capital of the world! Who knew? I didn’t .. till I moved here. We have a 100 year old orchard less than 1/2 mile from our house so I like to stop in there to get the big sweet cherries. I have to practice restraint or I will eat them in one setting … and that can be a dangerous move … Enjoy the lake and the peaches .. yum 🙂 MJ

  3. Aahhhh……how heavenly.
    Beautiful visuals!

  4. All of these things sounds like bliss! We went on holiday in Wales at Easter which was lovely, and going to France with my parents in August/September. I can’t wait for the warm weather, beach, swimming, bbqs and lots of reading! Bliss. I hope you enjoy!

    • Thank you; and your plans sound equally wonderful. Cheers to you .. and I hope you enjoy your summer reads & eats outdoors. MJ

  6. Sounds like a perfect getaway. I hope you have a week full of all of the above – and many more pleasant surprises.

We are traveling to FL soon, to catch the last Space Shuttle launch. Quite the opposite of a ‘quiet’ trip, but the hubs and I (and the kids) will enjoy it. Fingers crossed it takes off as scheduled. ~ Lenore

    • How exciting! I have always wanted to be there for that … I actually love road trips … fun stuff. I hope you have a great time (( and please write about it )) MJ

  7. This sounds so perfect. Thanks for the vision! And I love your very purple blog.

    • Thank you … for me, living in an overly scheduled world, tossing the watch, shoes, and rules feels like a juicy little slice o’ heaven .. ooh ahh. (( and I love purple, too .. but you could probably tell that .. hee hee)) MJ

  8. “Windows open, daylight lingering… and a firefly’s dance within reach.”

That sounds lovely! Have a wonderful, restful vacation 🙂

    • We went out with friends last night and, on our way home, the fireflies were out in force .. so magical!! (( didn’t have them growing up, we lived too far north I think )). so far, very restful and happy vacation. Windows shut today though, supposed to be 90! Cheers, MJ

i saw “purposeful nothingness” and thought you were talking about my job…

what you describe would be wonderful. Our vacations are nothing if not chaotic…downtime comes in fits and starts…but somehow a combination of both seems to work….well, most of the time. Have an outstanding, relaxing, peaceful, serene and thoroughly rejuvenating vacation….

    • You always make me laugh, coop! HA 🙂 Since I am so goal oriented, I find it helpful to set goals for vacation like I described. I’ve had too many vacations when we spent the entire time shuttling kids around, sleeping in old beds at relatives houses, wasting time trying to figure out the game plan of the day and coming home completely exhausted and frustrated. I’m determined to enjoy the days we have off and resist the urge to fill them up with “stuff” to do …. Cheers! MJ

  10. I love this – it conjurs all of my summertime dreaminess. Yet somehow, when I try this, it ends up being work. My list starts going something like – painting, mulch pitching, cleaning out closets. I want your vacay!

    • I know what you mean; we’ve had many weekends and vacations like that … they start out wistful and quickly fill with the “shoulds,” the “musts” and the “have tos.” My closet still needs to be cleaned and … eventually it will be. But not this week! I am giving myself permission to just luxuriate in my days off and do a whole lot of nothing!

      Cheers, MJ

  11. Yours is some great writing.

Swim trunks, antique baseball glove, gas grill, and difficult morning decisions in relatives’ houses like: should I wear the shirt with a lot of spit-up or a medium amount of spit-up?

I aim to see the Northern LIghts… when I get to leave Kansas.

    • Thank you, Jimmy. Go with the medium spit up and then, when you’re out, buy a really loud souvenir tee shirt that hides it :).

I grew up with the Northern Lights dancing overhead on summer nights … and … shamefully took them for granted. I suppose I thought that everyone’s sky was painted as such … when my father died, and I was on the plane bound for home, we entered the Canadian airspace north of MN and into southern Saskatchewan … I looked out the plane’s window and saw the Northern lights … twinkling and welcoming me home. It was so comforting to see that beautiful sight once again, and especially in that moment when my emotions were the most raw. MJ

  12. Sounds like the perfect vacation to me! Delicious and relaxing, with lots of time for all the most important stuff! Your description makes me want to say, “ooh, can I come too?”
    Have fun!

    Sheila

  13. Yay…sounds awesome! Enjoy your time off 🙂

    • … it has been. Last night cooled down enough to allow for windows open & curtains fluttering in the breeze. That, plus a touch of too much sun = an excellent way to fall asleep. Ahhh MJ
