I felt the earth move … under my feet

Sitting in my West Michigan office earlier today, my chair started to sway. I felt light-headed, like I was experiencing BPPV all over again. Instant dread took hold.  But – as soon as it was happening, it seemed to pass. “That’s weird, I thought.”   Because I regularly battle low blood sugar, I immediately reached for a high protein snack.

Moving on to next task at hand, I didn’t think anything more about it until I read of the earthquake that took place in Virginia today around 1:51 pm E.T.   I knew that had to be it.

AP reports indicate that this was one of the largest ever recorded earthquakes in the DC area. The depth of the quake was only around a 1/2 a mile and that explains why so many felt it.

Immediately I thought of old friends .. and new blogging friends .. in and around that area.

I thought of all those who’d survived 9-11 in DC, New York and Pennsylvania and wondered if this caused instant panic in them, too.

I said a silent prayer that no one would be hurt or worse yet, killed.

How about you?  Did you feel the earthquake today?

  1. Definitely felt it here in Queens, NY. Was sitting on my bed, just opened my laptop and my room trembled for about 30 seconds.

Panic, not so much. My room tends to tremble the same way when I have my sound system on blast.

    • That is wild! Glad you are OK and yes .. I hear you about the sound system. Happens in my SUV. Way to keep it light. Cheers! MJ

  2. I didn’t feel it at home, but so many in close towns did…I’ve heard tales of sofas swaying…and several friends were panicked by the same strange physical, light headed effects….crazy!!

    • It was creepy/crazy. Hubbs thinks me and the boy are “certifiable” but I know what I felt. If I had seen a sofa swaying I would have really wondered …. thanks for weighing in! MJ

  3. We were sitting in the local cafe having a little lunch and it came up on the TV. I know it isn’t a laughing matter but as everyone silently watched…someone said,” one way to solve our problems in D.C.” I know…it was mean but the whole cafe broke up. Seriously, I hope no one was hurt, I know those Texan Republicans hope that as well.

    • Sometimes a little moment of levity is what’s needed to alleviate the discomfort. I hope no one was hurt, either. Thanks Lissa, MJ

  4. That’s crazy! Glad you are okay.

  5. Oh, yes indeed! My post tomorrow will be about this. Very strange indeed….. never having experienced an earthquake before, I had no clue what was happening.
So, I guess I can say I have a new experience in life! Thanks for your concern. No damage in our immediate area.

    • Wasn’t that something else? I had no idea what was going on until later on. I felt like my chair was sitting on … Jell-O. Weird.

Glad you had no damage there. You folks have had enough excitement this year! MJ

  6. Didn’t feel it in central Illinois…glad you are okay.

  7. We picked a fine time to leave for vacation, with a home and farm in NC and a cabin and farm in VA. Haven’t heard if anyone felt it in and around Virginia, but our cabin sits inside of the bowl of the Jefferson National Forest which may have absorbed any shocks. People in NC felt it, but I don’t think there was any damage there. But Hurricane Irene is headed for SC and NC, so I think we’ll just stay out here in South Dakota!

    • I’ve been thinking about you out on the road and wondering how this impacted things at home … and now Hurricane Irene to boot. Holy Smokes!! Safe travels, Renee 🙂 MJ

  8. I didn’t feel it in Alaska, but I felt a small earthquake years ago in Western Colorado. I remember having a moment of disbelief…is that what I think it is? And then it was over. It was so fast I wasn’t positive I had really experienced an earthquake till it was confirmed on the news!

    Glad you’re ok!

  9. The news said 22 states felt it. It did not reach TX.. My mother though updated us on our family in VA. Then I thought to look at fb for status updates. By 2:00 PM yesterday I had processed, “Yep, there definitely was one.” Funny I used fb as a news source.
