“When you are in a creative or appreciative zone, you literally have no access to your inner lizard, to that fear-based, non creative, shrieking little beasty who’s so afraid you’re going to be a bag lady.”
–Martha Beck
When your inner lizard appears, how do you silence her/him?
My inner lizard is: sarcasim
I try to keep that beast inside but on too many occasions that green ole lizard just pops out of its hole –
I try keep it at bay by stopping and saying a prayer
God Bless
susie
I hear you, Susie … sometimes the lizard strikes before we realize it’s out of it’s den!! 🙂 MJ
So true MJ – I don’t want to be remembered as the sarcastic ole lady
Take care
🙂 I’m sure that won’t be the case .. MJ
Actually, my inner lizard is a good guy–a source of creative energy. We lived with lizards in the house in both Vietnam and Haiti, and I learned to love them. In some cultures they are considered a blessing.
Gotta learn to love the lizard, I think.
Hugs and Happy Lizarding to you,
Kathy
I am so glad you have an inner good guy – yay!! I have never thought of it that way before … hmmm now I need to ponder on that.
My inner lizard gets a fly swatter to the face – snap!
MJ
I don’t mind lizards when they are geckos. But when they turn into gila monsters then I have to silence them with words and paper. Lots of words, lots of paper. Or else I have to throw something. Then I feel better. 🙂
Geckos are cute — outside .. 😉 Like you, my Gila monster needs to be silenced … usually by the evidence that I can do whatever it was she said I couldn’t. Cheers to you, Jeannette 🙂 MJ
Ooh….I don’t like the thought of an inner lizard. They’re not one of my favorite creatures.
I think shyness was my inner lizard, but Motor Man has helped me with that. A Lot.
… I can see how his confidence and steadfastness would give the shy lizard courage to come out & play 🙂 MJ
Never thought about an inner lizard, but I have eaten a few outside ones when I have camped in the desert. Good taste, but snakes have more meat on them…
ha ha ha! Good one, Bob — MJ
Oh, that’s easy, I just talk much, much louder than it does!
~d.
Drown it out? Simple yet effective… cheers D!
MJ
I meditate when my inner lizard comes out… and it comes out A LOT here in China! 😀
That sounds like an effective strategy, Sandi … 🙂 MJ
PS I visited all of your recommendations… and learned a lot – thank you sweet friend!
My inner lizard used to hassle me with insecurities…and occasionally tries to raise it’s ugly silly naggy voice…BUT…I just tell it to shut up and leave…God is greater so bye bye little lizard!
Good work – stare down the lizard. You go, Cowgirl 🙂 MJ
I silence the little beasty through dedication. I have set a writing goal for once a day and regardless of what happens, baring death, I will do it.
That is perfect; beasties don’t like dedication. Thanks for visiting .. please come back again! MJ
My inner lizard got its way for years. So, I found evidence that it was wrong, and every time it attempts to move back in, I show it the proof and send it packing. It may stop by for a visit, but it isn’t allowed to spend the night!
I love everyone’s comments here. You know how to inspire a great conversation MJ!
Evidence – kablamaroonie! And — no futon for the lizard 🙂
This was a fun conversation wasn’t it?
My inner lizard picks at insecurities like a scab … like I commented earlier, it gets a fly swatter to the face – snap! One or two strikes like that and it retreats to a corner to lick its wounds.
Enjoy your day Renee!! MJ
I have yet to figure out how to win the power struggle with my inner lizard!
I hear you, Terri; that inner lizard can be tenacious! Press on .. MJ
I’ve never thought of that, but I love the inner lizard idea. My inner lizard is usually me saying I should have done more or things differently. I’m not quite sure how I deal with it. Maybe that’s why I enjoy watching my cats destroy a good lizard.
I know, Leah, right? When I read that quote it was like, “BAM!” I could totally see my inner lizard flicking her tail and taunting me … Kathy has a positive one, mine’s dark and doubting. But as long as we understand who is lurking in there, we can deal with it, right?? 🙂 MJ
