Cats & dogs

Darla’s post about marriage and relationships inspired me to make the observation that Hubbs and I are like a cat & dog together.

I’m like a golden retriever in the relationship – happy, lively, kinda goofy —and  he’s the cat.  Fussy, jumpy and difficult to please.

He’ll decide if he (we) wants company, He’ll decide if/when/where – whatever.

Every once in a while, like a big ole dog would, I’ll whomp him upside the head (not literally) and settle his fussy self down. Pretty soon he’s purring again.

But, just like cats & dogs, we have a way of getting along and, nearly 22 years later, it’s never been dull.

I stumbled over this old favorite on YouTube yesterday morning and have been humming it ever since.

You ask me if there’ll come a time
When I grow tired of you
Never my love
Never my love

You wonder if this heart of mine
Will lose its desire for you
Never my love
Never my love

What about you? Can you see similarities in your relationship here?  How are you the same? How are you different?

  1. My husband and I got together late in life so we were already different people than when we were young. I am so type A and he is so laid back. It actually works. Without me he is plain vanilla. Without him I am a banshee whirlwind stirring up dust bunnies!

  2. Interesting…surprise, surprise but I am a true Virgo. My husband is more of the laid-back dog. Somehow, we make it work.

    • no way~! Huh. Well, Hubbs is a great guy, one you can set your watch to – a real stand up fellow. He’s brought a lot of structure to my Gemini Circus and I’ve given him permission to let loose once in a while 🙂 MJ

  3. I gave my husband the framed words of “Never My Love”, written by the songwriter for one of our early anniversaries. Not sure who’s the pup or the cat, perhaps we take turns..

  4. LOVE this post, MJ. I’ve not yet read Darla’s piece, but I got a hoot out of this one. In our relationship, I’m afraid I’m the uptight, cat-like one. Sara is puppy-like. Maybe I need to look more closely, at that.

    Hugs from Ecuador,

    • Well the good news is that very few people/couples seem to be the exact same personality – imagine how boring the world would be if we were all the same? Ugh~! Cheers, MJ

  5. Love that old song!
Motor Man is definitely more like the lab: always ready for the next adventure! And I must admit, he’s had a good effect on me!

    • I love that song, too; I can see your MM being the playful one, and that his playfulness has been good for you, too 🙂 In a happy way only!

  6. I’ll always remember listening to the Association play this song and another fav “Cherish” at Jennison Field House in East Lansing, front row seats!

  7. Ah, I had forgotten that song! Good one!

Your relationship with your hubby sounds a bit like me and mine. I’m constantly looking for ways to shake things up. I get cabin fever and a change in surroundings always helps. I love to read about new things, try new foods, get creative. He’s same ol’, same ol’. But with a little encouragement from me, he’ll play along with whatever big idea I come up with.

    • Yep, as much as I like to be home and have some quiet I get restless after a period of time — Hubbs could hunker in and never leave … retirement will be interesting for us! He’s a pretty good sport, most of the time .. 🙂 MJ

  8. Me, myself and I have our moments just like pairs do!

  9. As a Virgo, I can relate totally. It sounds like you guys mesh really well.

    • Hee hee! We mesh pretty well most of the time; only when we’re tired or stressed to things not go so well .. thankfully that doesn’t happen too often. MJ
