On Sleep

During the week, on these crisp autumn mornings of late, I dream of sleep.

I dream of sleep that lingers and languishes, the kind where dreams slip in and dance across your thoughts. Sleep that soothes and restores. The kind that’s not compartmentalized.

But .. the weekend arrives and I find myself up with the birds. Every. Single. Time.

As much as I try to sleep in, I just can’t seem to do it.

Occasionally, a nap finds its way to me and that offsets the weariness. But in the day-to-day craziness that is my work world right now, sleep is a commodity I fiercely protect.  The problem is that if I go to bed too early, I wake up far too early also. If I go to bed too late, I feel the grog all day long.  Ugh!

So, again today, I was up and at ’em bright & early – long before the sun had appeared.  Laundry – done.  Dishes – done.  Soon, we’re off to brunch with my Father-in-Law & Aunts/Uncles, we’ll stop stop at the grocery store for a few essentials and then later tonight comes a Halloween Party – yeah!

Maybe I’ll sleep in tomorrow. 🙂  But then again, probably not.

What’s your sleep routine? Are you a weekend early bird like me? Do you have a love/hate relationship with your alarm clock?  Have you ever day-dreamed about sleep? & the Hubbs a few years back; We had a lot of fun with this costume!! & the Hubbs a few years back; We had a lot of fun with this costume!!

  1. I don’t think you can see the ads the Word Press puts on your blog but today there was a video for Cat’s Pride light weight litter. As a cat person I couldn’t resist and it was hysterical. So much better than the Ford truck commercials they used to put on mine. As to sleep, it only gets worse. When you get older you have to pee a couple times during the night and then getting back to sleep is always a challenge. Then when you finally fall asleep at 6 a.m. it’s almost time to get up!

    • I’ll take Cat’s pride over Cialis ads 🙂

The only thing that helps is when I work out then I sleep like a log — haven’t had to get up in the night .. yet 🙂 Looking forward to it – not!

      Cheers! MJ

  2. I sleep too much…and life rolls on….one can sleep in the hereafter.

  3. Same. Same. Same.

  4. Oh gosh, T-Bob (pet/resident cat) wakes us up at the same time every morning 5:00 AM for treats and fresh water and then proceeds to sleep all day! GS2 got up at 6:00 AM this morning. I took him away from his parents and made waffles. He ate one whole waffle before the parents got up grinning with every bite. Priceless!

    • That T-Bob has his routine and that is that! 🙂

How wonderful for you to get GS2 up so the parents could sleep in a little – now THAT’s a gift 🙂 MJ

  5. One of the blessings of my job is I usually go to bed physically exhausted and sleep like a baby. After a day outside in the elements, once I have something to eat and get cleaned up, I start to get sleepy. If I have one or two nights a year that I have a little trouble falling asleep, that would stretching it. I normally have a couple of cups of Starbucks french roast (regular) right up until it’s time to call it a day. I wake up early and chipper (4:30- to 5:30 AM), week days and sleep in til 6 on Saturday. 😉 thanks for asking. Did I mention, I love my job 😉

    • You are so right, DM, when I’ve worked physically that day I sleep much better. You do that every day and that will probably keep you young and fit for years 🙂 I am so glad to hear that you love your job 🙂 – when you love what you do, it’s not really work!!

  6. I do the same exact thing! Every morning all week long I am up bright and early…muttering under my breath that this weekend I am going to sleep in…and I’m wide awake and up and going weekend mornings too! It is annoying and the only thing I can figure is since you do this too, it has to be the farm girl thing…we have it in our DNA and before we knew it was there it was drilled into us:) and what is a nap? Every time I try for one the phone rings:) Have fun tonight!!!!

    • I think you are on to something with the farm girl thing … the only time I can get in a nap is when I’m nearly sick with exhaustion .. I think being an early bird is just a fact of life for me. We had a blast last night, we were the ticket takers at our club’s annual Party – we didn’t wear costumes this time but we got to enjoy everyone else’s. I think next year we’ll gather a big group and go together in costume. The best costume I saw last night was Snow White and the 5 dwarves — Sleepy and Grumpy stayed home 🙂 So cute!

  7. Oh, what a cute picture of you and Hubbs! I bet the two of you have the best times together!
I’m up early every day. If I sleep til 7, I feel that I’ve slept away the day! Hope you enjoy the party and will share pics!

    • Thank you; that was a particularly fun party & costume. He’s not much for dressing up but he goes along with it for my sake.

Last night we were the ticket takers at the front door so we didn’t dress up (we each had blinking necklaces which glowed in the dark) but we had a lot of fun – the best costume there was Snow White and the 5 Dwarves. Grumpy and Sleepy stayed home – ha ha ha! Also saw The Mad Hatter & Alice, Duck Dynasty & Wife, Slash, Alice Cooper and some 70s chix, a bunch of bikers, pirates, gypsies & thieves. (those might not have been costumes, now that I think of it – ha!) and more. I remember you saying you like to be up early and go for your walk — and like you, I don’t like to lose part of my day so I am usually up early, too!

      Have a great day, Dianna!

  8. I’m a morning person, and the older I get, the earlier I get up. During the week, I set my alarm clock for 4:30. I give myself a few minutes to say good morning to the dog and cat, then get dressed for a workout at 5:00. After the workout, I shower, get ready for work, probably switch out some loads of laundry, unload the dishwasher, make a lunch… Morning is when I have the most energy. After I come home from work, I can talk myself into making and cleaning up dinner, but not much else is going to happen that can’t happen while I’m sitting in my living room chair. My eyes will start to droop after 9:00. And those nights that I stay up really late only bring on the grog, just like you described.

    • Boy you get a lot done before work!!

As tired as I often am during the week I usually don’t snooze the alarm either – I get up and putter around and get a few things done. Then off to work; I cook a lot on Sunday so that I don’t have to worry about meals much till Thursday.

Like you, by 9:30 I’m snoozing in the chair and have to heave myself to bed! 🙂

      Have a great day, Terri!

  9. I’m an early riser. Even if I go to bed late I usually wake up between 4:30 and 5:00. I know, terrible! But my best energy is in the morning, so I like to be up and doing! I see from the comments that I’m a carbon copy of Terri!

Hope your work life slows down so you can get some rest! Fun photo! ~ Sheila

    • I hear you, Sheila… my energy is highest in the mornings, too 🙂 I’m taking Friday off just so I can … do whatever I want 🙂 MJ

  10. This is so true. I get up so early during the week that on weekends, the most decadent thing in the world is to sleep late. Yet it rarely happens. I adore the picture of you and hubs. What is the costume choice this year?

    • I’ve learned that, since I no longer am successful at sleeping in, that a 1 hour nap feels equally decadent. I shut the phone off, slip under a quilt, and make sure the BR door is shut, too!! Whee!

No costumes this year but we sure did have fun with that one – ha! MJ
