Plans, reality and vitamins

So … on Friday I wrote about how I was looking forward to Hubbs coming home on Saturday morning.  Well, let’s just say that things didn’t go exactly as planned.

His saga started when the taxi didn’t show up at the hotel … at 4:30 a.m.  A last minute ride got them to the airport in time for the 7:00 a.m. flight to Atlanta.  Where he soon found most flights to MI — xlld.

To put it mildly, he was “fit to be tied.”  The travel agency … useless.  The airline … nonchalant.

Surrounded by other stranded and road-weary passengers, he did the only thing he could think of …he quietly approached a gate agent and stayed calm.  Eventually, the agent found Hubbs a flight to Detroit with a possible connection to Grand Rapids. But no guarantees and no promises.

He fell asleep before take-off and found himself landing in Winter Storm Maximus (and when did we start naming storms, anyways?)

Not to be deterred, he grabbed a rental car with the warning that road conditions were extremely dicey, with many cars in the ditch… and made the 3 hour drive in 6.   He’s pretty sure his finger nails are still in the steering wheel of that Chrysler.

Returning the car, he retrieved his SUV and pulled into our garage around 9:00 p.m., 10 hours past his expected arrival time.  He looked dreadful, was shaking cold, pale, hungry and stressed.  But, he was home.

A few servings of Poor Man’s Chop Suey, a shower, a chat and .. off to bed.

Today, the ole boy has a skip in his step. It’s Super Bowl Sunday and friends are joining us later to watch the game.  We’ll enjoy wings and snacks, subs and soup and Game Day brownies.

We both took tomorrow off so today really feels like a Saturday.  A Saturday with a warm house, a happy wife, a contented hubby and gratitude.  Lots of gratitude.

What are you thankful for today?

  1. So glad he’s safely home. Have fun today! And by the way – “we” didn’t start naming storms. Neither does the National Weather Service. That’s strictly a marketing schtick from The Weather Channel – and it caused no end of uproar in the serious weather community when they started the practice. It’s one reason some of us (coughcough) pay no attention to TWC any more. The marketing/meteorology balance is tipping a little too far toward one end of the scale. 🙂

    • Yesterday was fun, the game was a bit of a blowout but the food & company was great. Yeah – on the naming — it’s dumb, and I’m not playing along!

  2. Oh noooo…with an Oh Yes ending. I like happy endings. Whew! Enjoy!

  3. I hate winter travel for all those reasons. I have spent hours on the floor (no seats left) at O’Hare trying to get home on a warm, sunny day. Can’t imagine it in really bad weather. So glad he made it home safely and taking off Monday was a really good idea.

    • That’s terrible, having to sit on the floor (ick) at O’Hare or any other airport. He slept 12 hours Saturday and took a 2 hour nap on Sunday! Today he looks better, has more color, and yes it was good to have today off – for both of us!

  5. Today I am thankful for weather that is not snowy or frozen! And I’m thankful on a personal note for discovering that my body has decided to become sensitive to eggs- so I can avoid eating them and get my poor ravaged insides back to healthy.

  6. Oh, my. What a challenging day that must have been. ( I have a feeling my hubby would have handled it exactly as yours did.) Happy for you to have a fun day planned, AND a day off for both of you tomorrow!

    • It was one long day, he was frustrated and ornery, and tried to keep his cool, but I know it was hard at times. We’re both happy he’s home, safe & sound 🙂 MJ

  7. Oh, I can so empathize! Had my own disrupted journey recently…amazing how strong a desire to be HOME becomes when there are obstacles in your path! Glad he made it safely!
And, I love your cartoon and the quote! Always a perfect pick from you! ~ Sheila

  8. Yay for Sunday turned Saturday!

Super Bowl Sunday is usually our get-taxes-done-with-friends-and-family day. I was disappointed I haven’t received all my tax documents timely and thus can’t get my beefcake refund rolling today, and yet . . . I will be spending time with friends and family, and it always feels great to be there regardless of the tax stuff. So I’m tremendously thankful for that: the feeling of being in good company.

  9. I am thankful your hubby made it home safe!

    • me, too! We had fun last night and it was good to have today to rest; he’s still weary but seems much better today than 2 days ago 🙂 MJ

  10. So happy he arrived safely.

  11. A hell of a flight-ride brrr. Give him a warm hug and enjoy your time together.

  12. Oh, that sounds miserable. So glad to know he finally made it–SAFELY!

    Hugs from Ecuador,

  13. So glad to hear your hubby made it home safely in spite of all the roadblocks and treacherous conditions! He must have been beyond relieved to be back at home, able to sleep in his own bed and be able to enjoy the big game with friends and family.

  14. This weather has been terrible for people trying to get from one place to another. Glad your hubby made it home the same day as anticipated. Our SIL had to fly out to California this week, but couldn’t get home as planned. He rented a car after somehow getting to Ohio and drove the 300+ miles home last night.
