Random Five Friday – Five random stream-of-consciousness thoughts. Go!
1. It’s Friday! Supposed to hit mid 60’s F today. How can I not smile at the 2 of those statements?
2. Golf. Hubbs runs his alumni golf league; earlier this week, oldest boy asked “Does Dad enjoy doing that, Mom?” My response, “Not always… but he’s the one they all come to so he figured he might as well herd the cats.” True story. The first 2014 tee time is set for tomorrow morning and you’d think today was Christmas Eve. Funny man.
3. Adventure. Had another road trip yesterday, and an opportunity to meet with elected officials, community leaders and local folks. I may have said this before but I love this part of my job. Why? A. Well, I get out of the office & away from my desk & phone. B. I usually end up somewhere I’ve never visited before and C. I never know what I’ll get or who I’ll encounter. Every time I go, I come back feeling like I’ve touched humanity all over again.
4. Local. Going to new places means you’re free to drive right past chain restaurants and look for places like “The Pink Elephant” Diner along Michigan’s West Coast. Here they serve breakfast all day, turkey dinner for lunch and pie. Lots and lots of pie. Local Mom & Pop shops make me feel at home, even if I’m not.
5. Pie. It’s only 27 days till I’m home on the farm with Mom :). This time, I’m asking for her “Flapper Pie” recipe. I know I can get it online (see link) but but I want her recipe. Creamy, cool and delicious, it’s a delightful, happy pie from my prairie childhood and one to add to my repertoire. Have you ever heard of it?
Happy Friday, peeps!
Love your 5! Can’t wait to see the recipe for Flapper Pie. I’ve never heard of it, and will resist the temptation to Google it. I’d rather wait for yours! I’m so excited for you to be spending Mother’s Day with your Mom: special!
Hope it’s a perfect weather day for the golf game tomorrow.
Our weather is wonderful: sunny and 70’s!
Have a GREAT weekend, MJ!
I intend to make it at her house as a trial run then bring the recipe home with me 🙂
It’s a beautiful day here, enjoy your weekend, Dianna!

Had a really hard time getting past that pie photo. What a way to start Friday. Yes, I love people who tell you the oddest things. When I ran the human resources department in a mid-size company, my benefits coordinator was a fresh out of college young thing. She was very nice to the older ladies who worked there. One day she met up with one at the twinky machine and asked how she was. She got the lowdown on the woman’s lady parts problems. Totally freaked her out. Made my day!
That pie photo was taken at my hometown’s annual “fowl supper” and that right there, that is the “pie table” — more here https://emjayandthem.com/2011/10/13/making-room-for-pie/
That is one hilarious story at the twinky machine – OMG!

Goodness, spring is really coming to Michigan! That’s awesome for you–you really deserve some 60-degree temps after that winter you had. And the pies!!!!!!????? OMG–I’m salivating!!!!!
Hope you and Hubbs have a lovely weekend!

The “public” will usually make you feel better about yourself. 😉 LOL
I love “hole in the wall” non-franchise places. LOVE. THEM.
I agree, RR, and the best was the little old man sitting in front of me with the crazy eyebrows. Reminded me of my dad. He had a shy grin, held his hat in his hands and asked me a few questions over coffee. Loved that moment!
and the hole in the wall is where you’ll not only get the best pie but the juiciest stories, too! 🙂 MJ
Never heard of Flapper Pie either! Change of scenery + new and different places/people = too fun! Good Random Five MJ 🙂

Delicious. I am making some with Mom and will take pics for you all 🙂

Love the header! Flapper pie? I put it on my calendar for July 4 at the lake. No pressure. Have a great weekend!
Thank you, GS. That photo was taken at my hometown’s annual “fowl supper” and that right there is the “pie table.” Lord have Mercy, those ladies can COOK!

Flapper pies need to be kept in the fridge b/c it’s a creamy custardy-like filling. Heaven at the lake, I tell ya.
Happy Saturday! MJ
Pie. Pie. Pie!
Yes. Yes. Yes!
Longing for pie with my coffee this morning, David 🙂

Just look at all those lovely pies! I’m glad you enjoy your job, can’t beat that.
Those farm women can cook, I will probably gain 20lbs when I visit next month. Delish.
And yes, most of the time, I love my job. The only time I don’t is when people are in my way!

Doesn’t it feel like we really worked hard for these warmer days? Enjoy the sunshine!
Love how much you love your work. What a great feeling to know you’re making a difference.
Never heard of flapper pie, but I clicked over to the link and it sounds delicious! Might have to give that one a try sometime.
It sure does. It was over 70 yesterday and 65 this morning but the 4 letter word is making a re-appearance later today – Yep – SNOW!
Most of the time I love my work, so I feel pretty fortunate to say that. I like 1) growing the people 2) solving problems and 3) setting the pace/being the leader 🙂
Flapper pie is creamy and lovely, and I can’t wait to make it with Mom next month !! Cheers!
