It’s Friday – it’s random – here we go ~ Yippee Skippee! 🙂
1. Took a road trip Wednesday and most of the route I spent dodging construction cones. It was in one of those slowed-down jaunts that I noticed the sign for a farm market. And it was the “Honey Crisps” (middle baskets) that drew me off the highway. Perusing the apples brought a smile to my face and a small bag back to my car
2. The apples are sold by the peck ~ which equates to 2 gallons or 10-12 lbs of apples. They are also sold in 1/2 and 1/4 pecks. On our farm wheat and barley are sold by the bushel. When I hear the words “bushel and a peck” I can’t help but think of this song that Mom sang to us when we were little:
I love you a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck …
3. Before I left, I turned the corner and caught sight of this cupboard:
No, I didn’t buy any – for I still have some of my sister’s jam brought from home. Her pantry, while not quite as fancy, can easily rival the professionals!
4. We’re heading north tomorrow to visit my Father-in-Law … the colors are turning and the nights are getting colder. As much as he says he doesn’t need any help, the delight in his voice when we asked to come visit .. was palpable. We’ll stop in., he’ll show us around, point things out, go out for lunch, and I’ll leave behind his all time favorite – peanut butter cookies. It’s the little things, right?
5. Speaking of little things – a sense of humor is always welcome. The meeting I headed south for? This sign, in the ladies restroom, had me chuckling all the way home.
And how was your week? Seen any crazy signs lately? How’s your jam supply these days?
A friend of mine makes jams and jellies to sell and I always buy some. I have some blueberry open (OMG! nirvana!) and some sour cherry is up next. Homemade always has a fresher taste and I don’t know why. I love apples in the fall but I’m beginning to think it contributes to my IBS. Bummer! Guess I’ll have to put them in a pie…oh the horror.
they’re all yumm-o. Sissy sent me home with raspberry, strawberry rhubarb (my fave) and apricot 🙂
You can’t go wrong with an apple pie, cobbler or crisp! MJ
What an amazing photo of shelves and shelves of jams and jellies! I know I’m back in Michigan or Washington State when you can find apples at produce stands. In TX they’re only available at the grocery store as far as I know.
Good on you for dropping in to visit father-in-law. It’ll be a lovely drive as we head into the end of September. I’m at my mother’s for a few days just to enjoy each other’s company for a little bit. She was so excited to unveil last night’s dessert – Mexican Praline by who else? Blue Bell.
I never thought about the fact that they’re only sold in produce stands up here – and by up here I mean Michigan, Oregon, Washington or the lower Pentiction valley in British Columbia 🙂
Looking forward to seeing Grandpa today and having him show us around again 🙂 Mexican Praline Iced Cream? Oh man … MJ
All those apples make me want to head out to our local orchards! And the jams – ahhhh – the jams! Lovely post Emjay. 🙂
I know – those jams were swoon-worthy 🙂 MJ
Oh, peanut butter cookies! My absolute fav!!! Have a good weekend, MJ, enjoy your visit with your FIL!
You can’t really beat an old standby like the sturdy little peanut butter cookie – hearty enough for the lunch box but pretty enough for a church luncheon, too 🙂 MJ
I just wrote a lengthy reply to your post and accidentally deleted the whole thing ;-( short version: good/full week/ no heat in our house/ I want to make another batch of jam myself. have a good weekend! DM
I hate it when that happens!
Glad you had a good week – what’s up with the heat? MJ
regarding the heat in our house…took out the old boiler w/ radiator heat, installing forced air, need to run all new duct work, hoping to be up and running by next weekend.
good on you! MJ
Last weekend, my husband and I picked a 5 gallon bucket of apples from a neighbor’s trees. I intended to have turned them into applesauce by now, but my Little Man has been home sick all week from school. He’s finally on the mend, but with his homework, I don’t know if I’ll get to the apples before Monday. I love fall!
so sorry to hear about little Man not feeling well :(! I do believe you can slice and freeze the apples for later, too 🙂 MJ
Thanks for that tip!
I’m so happy it’s apple season again. As much as I’ll miss summer – and it’s fresh fruits and vegetables, I have missed the apples. I bought some Honey Crisps last weekend too.
You know, my dad used to sing “I love you a bushel and a peck” to us kids. He was always saying or singing silly things, so I never really thought much of it. This is the first I’ve ever learned Doris Day sang it! Thanks for sharing that!
The Honey Crisps are almost gone already – between me & youngest boy – they’re fair game!
Ask your Dad about that song, I’ll bet he remembers her singing it 🙂 MJ
Love this journey! (and the food)
Thank you~ It was fun to get out of the office, mix it up with new people and enjoy the sights and smells of “Pure Michigan.” – MJ
Hope you had a nice trip. I bet those apples smelled so good! I remember bits and pieces of that song. I bought a jar of Elderberry Jelly at a little organic store at our local farmer’s market not too long ago. I hadn’t seen it since mom made it when I was a kid, and it’s as good as I remember. We didn’t get much, only when she found the berries, but it was worth the effort.
I did 🙂 Isn’t it so fun when a small jar of jelly can bring back so many wonderful memories? What a treat! MJ
