Random 5 Sunday – nonagenarians

1. It’s cold.  Bitter cold. But the sun is shining and that helps everyone handle it better.

There, there .. only 72 days till Spring

2. Last night we attended the *surprise* birthday party for a gentleman turning 90.  I wish you could meet him – he’s fit, sharp, smart, witty and debonair. His vocabulary includes words like “marvelous” and “terrific,” all while holding a glass of Scotch and winking at his pretty wife.   Listening to his children share stories he’d never told anyone – his 52 missions into North Korea as a fighter pilot – left us filled us with awe; listening to their tributes and love for him filled us with emotion.  And when his OLDER brother’s voice cracked as he described their close relationship well .. everyone lost it.   It was wonderful to hear the kind words with him, instead of waiting until after he’s left us.

3.  As the party ended Hubbs and I both got up to clear tables and pack up food, gifts and decorations.  I shouldn’t be but always am surprised by the ones who should help but don’t.  However, had we not done that, Hubbs would not have heard these words from birthday boy’s wife, “You’re such a good man; I can always count on you … Thank you.”   Aww.

4. Came across this list today and had to share it with you – 30 days of growth – there is a lot here and I can’t possibly do them all but  7, 11 and 14 resonated with me. You?

5.   Back to work tomorrow.  I have a few things to get around yet today but … for the most part, I’m ready.

  1. So much to love in your post today, MJ. Wow – that 90 year old birthday boy could pass for being in his 60’s! Wonderful that you and your hubby helped clean up after the party. So many folks just ignore/miss that opportunity to help.
And I love, love, love that list for 30 days of growth….so many there that struck a note with me. Number 30 is something that I try to do everyday – at least, taking the picture part. That may be a theme for my blog over the next month or so! Thanks, MJ!
Hope your back-to-work week goes well; knowing you, i just bet it will!

    • I loved the list!!

He is one fine looking gentleman and is in great health – I know 70 year olds who look older (and act older, too) than he does 🙂

Happy Sunday, and thanks for your kind words 🙂 MJ

  2. Being ready to return to work, awwww! 90? No way! Yep, we’re always on the clean up crew too. Why is that? Oh, because we’re considerate people. My party is tonight. Wahoo!

    • Yep – it’s time. Have fun at your party, I know you will 🙂 MJ

PS – I clean up b/c that’s how we were raised – get in and get it done and everyone can go home earlier (and happier) 🙂

  3. That 90th birthday party sounds wonderful. I agree! How great is it that everyone got to share the memories and love WITH him instead of when remembering him. And NO, he doesn’t look 90! Not even close. What’s his secret? I want in on it!

Hope your transition back to work is smooth!

    • The best part really was seeing him take in all of the love and stories — so many times ppl wait to say the kind words of love and respect until after someone has gone. It hit me then that he gets to hear it now – what a gift!

I don’t know his secret but maybe I’ll start drinking scotch, too 🙂

      *probably not*

  4. Great! The 90th birthday boy looks amazing and I can tell he must sound amazing too. There is hope but I would still love to know his secret. 🙂 I love the huskies comforting each other over the cold too – and your 30 days of growth! 🙂 Great post.

  5. Inspiring…

  6. 12, 18 and 28, those spoke to me. Agree with all above, no way that man is 90. Just no way!
No parties on the horizon here…not until my boy’s High School graduation in the Spring…Eeeek! 😄

    • I think everyone can find something on that list that pings for them 🙂

  7. Boy, Bob definitely looks great and fit! He’ll be one of those knocking back triple birthday digits before long!

  8. There were lots of good challenges in the list. I think I should print it out, but I’m not sure there are enough hours in the day to do all those things! 72 days to spring–cute! I think I can hold out that long. No, Bob doesn’t look 90.

    • That list was inspiring but a bit overwhelming which is why I only picked one thing to do consistently 🙂 Don’t really need any more pressure … MJ
