Random 5 – Summer, strawberries and being pretty

It’s not Friday but it is time for 5 random thoughts from the ever-swirling mind of yours truly. Ready? Set? Go!

1. I make my bed as soon as I get up. Every day. Not 10 minutes later, not an hour, right away.  Unless Hubbs is in it. Hard to make a bed up over someone 6′ tall.

I have nearly this many pillows on the bed.

2.   A Facebook friend told me joyfully that it’s only “6 months till Christmas!”  And that’s how people get themselves de-friended or – worse yet – punched!

3.  Bought several quarts of Strawberries at the Farmer’s market earlier this week.  Not sure if it’s all the rain we got but these are some of the best I’ve ever had!!  I’ll eat till I can’t and freeze the rest. The fragrance? One word: Heavenly. My favorite birthday dessert was Mom’s Strawberry Shortcake:  tiny sweet berries picked fresh from the garden, hearty REAL rich whipped cream piled on top of a thick slice of Angel Food cake.  I have a mandate that you MUST drizzle some of the berry juice onto the cake and let it soak in and turn the cake pink.   The taste of summer – next to a burger off the grill or farm fresh corn on the cob, that’s about as good as it gets!

Can you smell them?  Just heavenly!

4. Last weekend was my niece’s shower and my sisters and I giggled remembering how, in our day, a Bridal Shower was a social gathering and big time Ladies outing.  There was never an assumption that all of us could attend.  Oh no.  It was an afternoon or evening out for Mom, in her best dress, her hair curled up and her Avon lipstick on.  She’d always let one – not all three – of us girls go with her.  We all remember my middle sister pleading with Mom to let her go instead of another and assuring her she’d not get wet.  She probably did get to go after all, but what I remember most were Bridal showers in Church basements, tea in teapots, dainty squares on doilies and the privileged feeling of being included.

Showers were held in the basement of this United Church; the smell of Lemon Pledge and coffee percolating permeates my memories to this day.

5.   We have often heard someone described as pretty.  I love this definition even more:

pretty

Yes!

And how is your week going?  How were Bridal and Baby showers different when you were growing up?  What summer time fruit are you enjoying these days?  What are you pretty at?

  1. Motor Man and I make our bed every morning: maybe not as soon as we get up, but shortly after.
Believe it or not, I don’t care for the texture of strawberries, but I love the flavor, and love to drizzle the juice over pound cake.
Bridal and baby showers used to always be for the girls; now guys are involved too.
    Love the “pretty” saying!
Have a great SUMMER weekend, MJ!

    • I have yet to attend a bridal shower where the guys are there, but I have heard that’s happening – I think that would freak me out, just a little! MJ

  2. I like your “pretty” comment. And I LOVE strawberries.

  3. Sara

Going to a bridal shower tonight – my first in many, many years. I’m actually a little nervous! I don’t know what to expect.

    • How was the shower, Sara? 🙂 I think they’ve changed a lot since I was a kid — we always had a little program or song about the bride, maybe one game and lots of yummy foods & tea/coffee. Now it’s just all about the gifts. Kinda sad, really, MJ

  4. Really like #5!

  5. These days I hate showers. When I was young, there were fun. I don’t know what the difference is. Maybe the food was better (always home made, now you get cut up subs) with fabulous homemade desserts (haven’t had one of those since the last time I made one). Maybe it was the chatting and easy teasing. I love all things strawberry and my husband makes our bed every morning (how good is that!).

    • I love to go for the Bride’s sake but, unless there’s some older gals involved, today’s showers are lacking, in my opinion. Perhaps my Mom & Aunts just rocked out the shower world but everything else has been kinda “meh.”

I love that your hubby makes the bed — awesome! MJ

  6. My week has rocked. Was able to pour a 52 ft long driveway this morning between all the rain we’v been getting. (that was the main project I wanted to accomplish this week) Never been to a baby (or bridal) shower, a trend that I hope continues :-). Several years ago I had to made a list of things I am “pretty good at” as part of a self esteem workshop. I love strawberries too. Our local source told us last week they had a crop failure,..I had to buy them when last year I picked several gallons for free. I’m spoiled.

    • I love that you had to make a list of things you were pretty good at — and I’ll bet that list was as long as my arm 🙂
      Here’s to yummy seasonal fruit!
      MJ

  7. You had me at lemon Pledge!!

I too love pillows on my bed and sofa. It just adds to the homey touch of our home. Now the matter of strawberries, love them! Shortcake is my favorite birthday cake too. Showers were fun when I was younger but not so much now. The definition of pretty is lovely.

    • Strawberry shortcake = yum!!

I miss those Church basement showers with egg salad sandwiches, butter tarts, fresh punch or tea/coffee, a silly song about the bride and – as far as gifts went – YOU GOT WHAT YOU GOT and it was more than you had (no registries!! ) Pyrex cake pans wrapped in a tea towel + maybe a hand-written recipe OR a pretty new platter OR a 3 set of mixing bowls.

      MJ

  9. I am with you on immediate bed making MJ! I actually do not function well if the bed is left unmade in the morning. I grew up with “pretty is as pretty does” comments from Mom. Love strawberries and nectarines as favorite summer fruits. Berries too of course. Maybe I have a thing for fruit in general. Great post MJ…. thanks for sharing your week.

    • I am like you, Dor, I think I love most fruits. We didn’t grow up with them in abundance so I still consider fresh peaches, berries, nectarines, cherries etc as a “treat” and marvel that I can get them so easily. Here’s to tidy beds and happy homes 🙂 MJ

  10. Hi ya MJ!
Gotta have that bed made, my husband doesn’t share my opinion so it’s left to me…and I don’t mind.
I’m with ya on the “de-friended” or “punched”. Haha, no kidding. How bout we just enjoy the *now*? That goes for all four seasons too…much as I love winter and all. 😉
We’ve been enjoying cherries lately. First batch I bought were better than the last.
The week is going very good. We’re in Bismark, North Dakota with the Team until Monday.
I just dig #5. I think I’m “pretty” good at Winging It.
    Have a great weekend!
    ~d.

    • Let’s enjoy the now = YES! Summer goes too fast and I LOVE fall but I don’t wanna rush that, either :).
Glad to hear from you out on the road; I’d say you’re good at adventuring 😀
      Hugs
      MJ

  11. Wow, I can’t tell you how much I love your description of showers in the church basement. Your details are so well selected: the Avon lipstick, the scent of lemon Pledge! Nice work, MJ!

And just so you know. This summer I’m going on two-month RV trip with my nearing-ninety Godmother and her cat Pepe le Mew. I leave for the US in a week. The RV is huge, 37-feet. My Godmother will be driving and towing an SUV the entire way. She was a Flamenco dancer during her entire professional life. I’m going to try to blog about our trip and write a book about the 64 beautiful years she and my Godfather, a Venezuelan movie star (I kid you not!), were married, until Raul died last fall one month shy of his 97th birthday.

Sounds like you are doing well. Sorry to have been away so long!

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

    • Oooh I can’t wait for updates from your trip – it’s going to be epic, I can just feel it!

Thank you for weighing in and for your kind comments; when I use Lemon Pledge these days it takes me right back to the oak pews in my little country church 🙂 MJ

  12. I have a friend who is always updating the ‘days’ until Christmas. I panic every time she puts the thing on facebook. Yikes!

  13. I agree. The strawberries are amazing right now! And they do epitomize summer foods, along with corn on the cob, anything grilled, and watermelon! Yum.

What I remember most about showers “back in the day” is the party games and prizes for the guests. These days when I attend a shower, and the hostess says, “We’re not playing any games,” there’s usually a cheer from the guests.

    • I am going to buy some corn on the cob this week @ the farm market 😀

That’s funny the “we’re not playing any games” comment — I have witnessed that at baby showers and have seen everyone quite happy to skip the games!! MJ
