Random 5 Friday – between you and me

It’s Friday! It’s time for 5 Random thoughts from my world.  Ready? Let’s go.

1. 90 Sunday, 70 Thursday, down in the 50s overnight.  It felt like Fall outside and winter in the office (a/c blowing!) Between you and me, if the 90s don’t come back again this year, that’s fine .. give me the sunny, dry stuff any day!

4 seasons of weather

2. It’s been a whirlwind week at work and the next few months look to be the same.  Hubbs and I scheduled a little “getaway”  starting mid next week but we’ve also discussed “hanging around the shanty” instead.  Between you and me, it wouldn’t break my heart to stay put and cool our jets.

and there it is

and there it is

3. “Met” my new boss yesterday.  Sharp, accomplished, and organized .. and in another state.  Between you and me, I like what I hear.  The person who chose him is a leader I admire: if he picked him, we’re in good hands.  Whoop!

“I won’t put “good” in front of leadership; it is or it isn’t.”Georgette Sullins   (Amen said the choir!)

4.  Mom has not been feeling the best and, between you and me,  I’m worried about her.  I know she rallied everything she had to go to my niece’s wedding; I also know how much fun we had together,  saw how big and steady her smile was, and knew she wouldn’t have missed a minute of it.  Those memories comfort me when worry spins out of control.

5.  Something I love about Facebook is that I can see snaps from my home province via a photo group.    Debbie Young took this photo of Aurora Borealis dancing over my Saskatchewan sky.    It’s so dreamy that, between you and me, just looking at it makes me a farm kid all over again.

So, between you and me, how was your week?

  1. I promise to stop back and answer that question 🙂 Between work, having an extra family living in the house with us, and a bumper apple crop, I do not have the time margin in my life I normally have. Good to hear about your new boss, thinking of your mom, and Love the last picture!

    • I really love how you describe it as “not having the margin in my life” (my words). Heading out on vacation tomorrow and that will bring some margin back 🙂 MJ

  2. Love your “between you and me’s”! Hope you and hubby enjoy your vacation, however you spend it. And I’ll also keep your mom close in thought, hoping she’ll feel better soon. That has to be extra worrisome for you, being so far from her. Have a good weekend, MJ!

    • Between you and me, that was a fun way to write it !! Thank you for your kind thoughts, as always. Heading out tomorrow for some big-time fun with my main Squeeze – whoop! MJ

  3. Love the photos!! You and mom, aurora borealis- beautiful. And I find a sta-cation to be often times more relaxing than going away. But from time to time, I enjoy a change of scenery, or to visit family or friends.

What’s been going on around here is some work on the homestead. Prepping our front deck and corresponding little step-down decks for painting and doing the painting- some done, more to go. And finally taking action to have a new kitchen countertop put in. Picked a beautiful slab of granite, and when the company owner came over to look at some funky cabinetry that would have to be maneuvered around to take out the old and put in the new counter, he saw that this appliance garage (1970’s) was put in on top of the old counter and is integrated into the upper cabinetry (which is all tied together). To get this thing out would mean taking down all my upper cabinets. His alternative idea was to put the new counter on top of the old. Not my first wish, but beats taking down my entire upper kitchen. Several hours later on the same day, my husband’s co-worker dropped by for a visit. During the course of conversation I mentioned my kitchen woes and he checked it out. Turns out, when he’s not an engineer on a ferry boat, he’s done contracting, carpentry, and literally has the skills to build a house and do any sort of renovations. The next thing I know, he tells me he can get the counter top out without removing any cabinets, and can have the whole surface prepped for the granite to be installed. My angel!! I hired him on the spot. And because he’s not available for a few weeks, it gives me plenty of time to finish painting (and some deck repair) projects.

    • See how that worked out? All that AND a new/updated kitchen? Bam!! Whoop for you!

Heading out tomorrow for some fun with Hubbs, back later in the week to be with the littles and fam. And emails with work so I don’t regret it come Monday. Whoo 😀 MJ

  4. Enjoy your time off! End of summer vacations are always the best.

  5. What a sweet pic of you and your Mom. And that great big smile is evident in both of you. 🙂

    • She’s got a great smile, and one of her cousins told me recently that “I have a lot of spunk, just like her.” You couldn’t pick more flattering words for me 🙂 Cheers! MJ

  6. I’m finishing off Day 8 (of eight days in a row) and I’m whipped. It didn’t help that I woke up at 3 this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep so ended up going in and getting a head start on a busy day.

Glad to hear of your new boss, I hope that they don’t take you and your efforts for granted. 🙂

I’m thinking that I may have to visit Canada one of these years…if nothing else than to see the Northern Lights and get a look around “up there”.

Take care and have a great weekend.

    • Holy moley that is one long stretch. Rest up, I hope!

I think the new boss is an interim boss and that’s ok; seems like a very bright individual and I’m looking forward to working for someone .. who works! WHOOP!

You really need to venture up there, the Northern Lights are a bucket list “Must do.” Plus, I’ll put you in touch with my brother, the one who found the cool license plate for you. He’ll feed you till you need new pants. 😀

      MJ

  7. Shirley Matthews Dunn

Hope your vacation is everything you want and need it to be. Very good pic of you and your Mom, hope she is feeling better soon.

  8. Enjoy your vacay! Wherever! This week’s been a whirlwind as I prepare to leave for a writers retreat.

  9. I could have written almost this same post, from the weather, to the new boss, to the mid-week vacation time and parental worries.

Stressing about my parents is what weighs on me the most these days. Thanks for the tip – to focus on the highs. Worry gets us nowhere and doesn’t change anything anyway.
