Summer Days & Sully’s book

We’re nearing the end of our July vacation ~  and it always amazes me how quickly vacation flies by!

Ahh the lazy days of summer.  It’s hot, sticky and sunny.  Even with my 70SPF I have a warm tan with tan lines where my flip flops go and tank tops end.  As when I look back at all we’ve accomplished and had going these past 2 weeks it’s no wonder we’re both moving a little slow this weekend.

  • I arrived home on a Friday after attending a 3 day corporate conference
  • Had new window treatments installed (involved moving furniture/etc out of the way and back again)
  • Played in a couples golf scramble
    • all in the same day 😀
      • what was I thinking?
      • Say yes and you’ll figure it out later
  • Picked my sister up from the plane and, for a week, stayed up late and got up early, still talking
  • Visited the big lake (Lake Michigan) 2 x  + Won and lost money at the Casino
  • Cried watching “Toy Story 4” and “The Mustang”
  • laughed at all the same places in “Bridesmaids”
  • Reveled in the ability to sit across the table from each other, laughing until we choked while finishing each others sentences
  • Skipped breakfast & enjoyed watermelon and cherries for lunch
  • Savored pots of coffee & tea out on the patio with sister, Sully and Hubbs … plus a cold beer or two, too

  • Up and outside early and to bed when tired with no alarm clocks – WHEE!
  • Celebrated the 4th with amazing fireworks, dancing fireflies and neighbors
  • Decorated the hall for the kid’s wedding and hosted the rehearsal dinner, ordered the limo, catering, bar, DJ and more plus managed the details!
  • Helped him get ready on his big day
    • Cried with Hubbs and my sister at ^^ above
      • Smiled at his smile when he saw her
      • Cried again
  • Witnessed their vows, celebrated by dancing with our boys, my sister, hubbs and friends.
  • Polka’d till I lost my breath and then went out and did  it again 🙂
  • Cleaned up the hall and tumbled into bed
  • Got up early  & hosted a gift opening
  • Languished in the hot tub
  • Cared for, slept with and supervised grand-dog Sully ~ who is adorable and hilarious but a bit like having a 70lb toddler

Today I cooked up brunch, did some catalogue perusing and online shopping but still haven’t started on my books, there’s been no time.   …. but I think I’ll take a page out of Sully’s book and go enjoy a nap in the a/c.

What are you up to today? Take any naps lately?

It’s time

It’s time for Purposeful Nothingness.

An absence of schedule.  Lack of obligation. No particular place to be.

Naps.

No socks, clocks or conference calls in sight.

Toes will wrinkle from hours in the pool and books will give evidence of wee ones’ splashes.

Finches will fatten at the feeders and squirrels will squander the sprinklers.

It’s time for summer nights under the stars, talking, laughing, singing, living.

It’s time for shared glances, twirly skirts, golf dates and date nights.

Every year, hubbs and I take a week off to do all of  the above …and this year?

It starts this afternoon! 🙂

And I am THIS happy about it! (google.images.com)

Happy Independence Day!

God Bless America, my home sweet home!

Happy Birthday, Amer-wica!!

that's me & our boys at my citizenship party; the one who did the cheering is in white.

That’s what our 4 year old shouted during a pause in the Fireworks that year.  The crowd responded with a collective, “aww” after hearing his squeaky little voice express his heartfelt sincerity.

There we were, the four of us, taking in the Ft. Bend County 4th of July festivities in Sugarland, Texas.  Cotton candy, snow cones, BBQ pork, turkey legs, pickles and crowds.  June bugs, carnival rides, and country music blaring in the background.  Hot summer sun, slices of watermelon and try-your-luck-here games of chance and skill.  Spreading a blanket out over the dusty ground, passing the bug spray, and leaning back to watch the dazzling fireworks fill the sky. Pure summer bliss.

I’ve always loved our holidays, but Independence Day might be my favorite.  Why?  Because I’m a new citizen; in May, 2008, I stood with 78 other individuals from 34 different countries to take my Oath of Citizenship.  It was one of the proudest moments of my life.  (more about my journey here.)

The thing is … I could be a citizen for 40 years and I’ll still choose to say that  I’m a “new” citizen.  Why? Because I don’t know how else to communicate the significance of it all to me.

I’m a new citizen and today is Independence Day.

A day of parades and tributes, picnics and boat rides. A day for family, for visiting, for cheering and for reflection.  A day off work for many, and a day at work for some (thank you to our military, police, fire, rescue and other “essential” workers who keep us all safe).   It’s a day to slather on the sunscreen and take in a ball game,  dish up some potato salad and enjoy a cold drink and later, spread out the blankets and camp chairs to take in the fireworks.  It’s a day to remember that there are still many around the world who do not have the basic freedoms Americans enjoy every day.

It’s a day for gratitude.

I’m a new citizen; God Bless America … my home, sweet home.
