Where is there?

Walking downtown one morning recently, I thought about how my phone’s GPS had done all it could: It got me “there.”

But where was “there?”

The locator announced “You’ve arrived at your destination.”  I parked and got out, looking around. Up, down, all around.

Where is there?

Her voice chirped in my earpiece, “head north for 200 feet.”

Which way was North?   Was I supposed to start counting steps?

question

I turned, felt the biting wind, and turned again.

Walked some more.

Nothing.

Popped into a coffee shop and asked a young man serving.  He knew his address but not any others. I found out he lives in Eastown.  Pleasant yes, but totally irrelevant.

I bought a coffee anyways.  Delicious.

Stepping back into the wind, I turned right, away from it.

Followed my nose, so-to-speak.

Finally, I ducked into another portal and called the # associated with the meeting.  Thankfully the meeting organizer answered.  Explaining my dilemma, she laughed and said, “I didn’t think to give everyone a landmark, sorry about that.”   She described their building, gave me the suite number, and that was the end of that.

Looking up, I saw the building, and realized I’d been there, or close to there, the whole time.

I was here … and there!

“The path to our destination is not always a straight one. We go down the wrong road, we get lost, we turn back. Maybe it doesn’t matter which road we embark on. Maybe what matters is that we embark.” ― Barbara Hall

*Can you relate to this?  Have you ever found it hard to tell here from there?  How often do you turn off GPS and follow your instincts?

Another excellent adventure

Today’s the day.  The carpets are scrubbed, hotel welcome packs made.

Laundry’s done, supper’s in the crock pot and even old dog is shining.

all this cleaning is stressing me out!

all this cleaning is stressing me out!

Yes, a few last minute errands remain. But, for the most part, we’re ready.

Ready to welcome them in.

You see, my Mom & sister arrive today.

10 months ago, we’d never dreamed of a day like today.

No, at the time, we thought that was the end of future adventures.

But we were wrong.

I’ve written before about her determination and how she mothers;  I’ve written of the pinch felt when I long for my sister.

But today, today all of that will fall away.

Because today, when I stand in that airport waiting area I won’t be ashamed when the tears fall down my cheeks. I won’t care when I hear strangers say “aww.”  I won’t.  I will smile up at my guys and watch as they wipe their tears away, too.  And when my mother and sister appear, we will simply step forward and wrap them up in our love and thank them for coming to us.

And then — then the fun shall commence!

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family.  Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.  ~Jane Howard

On the road again

Headed out today to points north … yep, no one I know goes to “da U.P.” (Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) in ….December, ‘cept maybe snowmobilers and hockey players.

But I am.

This is a trip I’ve planned since taking the new job a month ago; I’m off to work with a direct report (employee), and to familiarize myself with our business there.

I’m headed to places with names like Ishpeming, Marquette, Escanaba and Houghton. I’ll see the shores of Lake Superior and meander my way along the Keweenaw Bay.  I’m off to explore a land I’ve never seen and meet people I’ve never met.

~1400 miles in 4 days. Thank goodness more than half will be by plane!

~1400 miles in 4 days. Thank goodness more than half will be by plane!

As much as I love the steadiness of my home and office routine, well today I just can’t wait to on the road again.   I like the adventure, seeing new places, meeting new faces, and traveling along life’s pathways.

P.S. Hubbs and I saw Willie at the Arena Theater in Houston, Texas.  What a performer!  His songs take me back to my teens… to Saturday nights spent cruising country roads with outlaw music blaring as loud as it could go.   He put on a great concert, and I’d see him again if given the opportunity.

Wherever the road takes you, I hope you have a great week, my friends!
