Random 5 Friday – Opening day, extra days and Adulting

It’s Friday and time again for Five Randoms from my world.  Ready?  Let’s go!

1  –  November 15th – the “high Holiday”- it’s opening day of firearm/rifle season in Michigan.   Several years ago I traveled across the state on a beautiful Fall morning, completely oblivious that it was “opening day.”   About an hour into my two-hour trip my attention turned from my tunes to the abundance of men in Orange jackets and pickup trucks off-road.   Startled deer burst out of the woods and across the highway.    I’ve never made that mistake again- nope, no more opening day road trips for me!

High-tail it Martha!

2 – This made me laugh out loud because it’s a little too true and don’t you dare touch my red spatula!

3 – Last week my team & I put together our Holiday time-off schedule – it wasn’t until I did so that I realized I have an extra WEEK of vacation days to use before year-end.    My face when I realized the mistake in my favor:

swirling, twirling dance of JOY!

4 – As a result -I’ve taken the WHOLE week of Thanksgiving off + time at Christmas AND New Year’s- I have a new verb for what I’ll be doing:  Hallmarking!  I plan to sleep till I wake, read till I can’t, watch sappy movies, decorate, cook, clean, work out, putz around and mostly lean in hard to my highly-savored time OFF!

5 – Even with the holidays off I still have days to spare – I’m saving those for our new grand-baby’s December arrival.  I plan to cuddle and rock our little one, take care of Mom & Dad, cook, clean and fuss over them all.  ❤

When’s the last time a mistake worked in YOUR favor?

Like that

I lifted this list from a previous post because I saw a trend of mine in there … the words “like that.”

1.    Some of you know that I hold citizenship in both Canada, my birthplace, and in the United States, my home. What you don’t know is that every time I go through customs, it’s all I can do to hold it together.  When an Immigration Agent says, “Welcome home” at either border, I blink back tears, every time.  I’m patriotic like that.

2.     I love to read and always have a book at my side.  But I get ornery when authors leave me hanging with a poor plot line or a dismal ending.  I will finish a book I’m not enjoying but won’t visit that author again. They don’t know this, or care, but I do. I’m stubborn like that.

Now this is a book I’d read again and again. ~Wonderful!~ image from goodreads.com

3.     I bake goodies and give them away; chocolate does little for me.  Potato chips?  Different story.  Potato chips take me back to summer nights in a backyard tent, reading comic books with my cousin, telling stories and plotting our next great pony-riding adventure. I’m quirky like that.

oh yeah!

oh yeah!

4.     I love going to the airport.  I can cry watching someone else’s reunion.  I’m sappy like that.

5.     The older I get, the less I care what people say and the more I watch what they do. I’m seasoned like that.

6.     I try not to look back unless the view is really worth seeing.  I’m determined like that.

7.     No matter how big or tall or experienced they become, my boys will always be mine and I pity the fool who dares hurt them. Yep, I’m a Mom like that.

I’d love it if you shared 7 things about yourself “like that.”

Lemons into Lemonade

I love this video.

Simply. Love. It.

Why?

Because it demonstrates how essential laughter is to our humanity.

In the video, “Dad” has received a rejection letter.  Watch baby’s reaction as Dad rips up said letter.

From what we see here … Dad could have stomped around, but didn’t.  He could have pouted, but didn’t.   Instead … he happened across a simple diversion that produced heartfelt joy.

Contagious joy.

Laughter is essential.  It releases endorphins that relax and rejuvenate us.  It connects us and it frees us .. all at once.

It’s awfully difficult to laugh and be angry at the same time.
