Random 5 – Suppers, Sparks and Wonky Donkeys

It’s the last Friday in September (how’d that happen!!) so it’s time for 5 randoms from my world:

1 ) Had Hubb’s Step-Dad, Grandpa John, over for supper last night ~ we’d been planning to do so for a while  but our weeks are jammed & weekends are often full, too ~ so a week night seemed like the best choice.   The roast went into the crock-pot before I left for work with Hubbs commenting how he had to smell it all day.  At no surprise to either of us, Grandpa arrived early with a bag full of Glad Ware (I know how you cook), sporting a fresh haircut, a new shirt and a whiff of after-shave.   The visit lasted several hours and we sent him home with leftovers, peanut butter cookies and more.   Upon his arrival he announced how he doesn’t eat much anymore … but after the meal he commented that “he hadn’t eaten that much in a while!”   🙂

  • It was another reminder that sharing a meal around a table is good for all and that small things mean so much.

2 )   As I often do at this time of year, I took today off.  I had every intention of cleaning out my closet, organizing  and more.  Instead I slept in, drank a pot of coffee, made my bed and am still in my jammies 🙂

  • Sometimes the best “to do” list is the one in the trash.

3 ) While answering questions from Grandpa about smart phones Hubbs deferred to me as “the Lover all things Techie” and he’s right, I do love me some Technology.  A hearty conversation followed about the pluses and minuses, pitfalls and pointers, apps and trackers.   In the spirit of tech fun, I showed him my newest gadget  ~ the FitBit Charge2, in purple, of course.   (( I’ve had the FitBit Flex for years but it’s starting to lose mojo – and with my recent foray into rebounding, I wanted a better tracker plus I missed having a watch )) By the end of the conversation he’d settled on keeping his flip phone (the one that’s rarely with him or charged. )

  • Everyone has their own interests and we can learn from each other ~ Grandpa’s into guns (Military Man) I’m not, but if I ever had questions I know just who to go to!

4 ) Next week brings October and, at work, we’re setting meetings into December and January.  Time has a way of racing ahead, doesn’t it?  I chatted yesterday with Pat, our UPS driver, who shared the exciting news of his retirement November 1st.  “Not doing another Holiday Season” he announced.  His glee was as broad as the smile on his face.  As much as I try to be in the “now” and be ready for what’s next, I do think sometimes you just have to Namastay – see below:

  • Namastay in my cozy clothes all day 🙂

5 )  And then there’s this ~ a wee Scottish Grandma reading “The Wonky Donkey” — be ready to laugh … hard.

  • Laughter makes everything better!

Thanks for reading my Random 5 this week ~ care to share yours?

Random 5 for Labor Day – Ice Cream, escape artists, Apple Season and days off

Random 5 for Labor day ~ here we go!

1 ) Years ago my cousin had a summer job at an ice-cream parlor. I spent the night with her to help eat at the shoppe.  We made up every concoction possible, ate gobs of ice cream, butterscotch, hot fudge, nuts and whipped cream.  I recently realized that I don’t crave ice cream ~ pretty sure that gluttonous memory is why.

Remember?

2 )  Labor Day.  The end of summer as we know it ~ and leaves here are already turning.   But wait – here’s the BEST news – Honey-Crisp apples are nearly ready!!  Oh the joy cannot be contained!  You can still buy some of last year’s apples for $5.00/lb — but soon the orchards near me will sell FRESH apples (bumper Michigan crop this year!) -I can get a dozen for ~$7.00 and youngest boy and I will gobble them down like iced cream!

3 ) Speaking of youngest boy, he has a  girlfriend and the girlfriend has a dog named Morty.  I like her already. And isn’t that the greatest name?  Apparently Morty likes busting free from the confines of the kennel; the kid has since nicknamed him “The great Mordini.”  Ha ha ha.

who can resist? Not I.

4 )  I love Fall.  Apples. Leaves. Bright sunny days. Cool, crisp nights.   I. Love. Fall! ❤

5) Hubbs and I both took tomorrow off !  I’m planning on sleeping in followed by coffee & a lazy brunch then a massage and whatever else I feel like doing – or not !!  Whoo Hoo!

otter day off

No stress, no dress code!

What’s your Random 5 looking like today? Ever over-do it on a food you love?  What happened?  Are you seeing signs of Fall where you are?  What’s the last kind thing you did for yourself?   Happy Labor Day everyone!

Not missing it

It’s been another wild week at work.  For months now, I’ve been putting in a tonne of extra hours on a project that will last most of this year, and I’m also filling in for another who has been in and out with health issues. It’s exhausting and yes, I’m exhausted.

Feeling the pinch, I scheduled a day off for tomorrow.

Can’t really do it.  Probably shouldn’t do it. And to me, that’s a sure sign I need to do it.

Guess what I’m doing tomorrow?

Nothing in particular!

No chores. No cleaning. No cooking. No laundry. Nada.

No checking email. No returning phone calls. No work. None.

Coffee and blogs in the morning then lunch with my girlfriends. A pedicure. Open a few windows and roll in the day.  Evening with hubbs, tunes on the mp3 and a smile on my face.  Ahh.

Random March Friday – Roll with it

It’s here! Friday! Whoop!

1.  Been fighting a cold all week, trudging through my workout and work days and barely managing to haul my carcass out of bed every morning.  Daylight savings time kicks my behind every year.   I have never adapted to it and I doubt I ever will.  Why?  Read on.

2. Where I grew up, time didn’t change for any season or any one.  You adjusted  or you didn’t and there were no expectations about moving this or tweaking that.    You rolled with it, and that mentality has been instilled in me ever since.

3. After a busy week with my own job and department and covering for another (a role I never seem to shake) I got up early today, put on my out-of-office and called it a day. I have a capable team, my desk is in order and I happily crawled back to bed where I remained for several hours.  Ahhh.  Sometimes, we just need a time-out and if I’m the one to put me there, then so be it.

True that!

True that!

4.  Guess what sound we heard this week?  Snow … dripping off the roof.  A steady drip-drip-drip as the sun beamed brightly.   Could Spring be coming? I sure hope so.

5. Lastly, playing around with my cell phone, I tried out some new-to-me edits to a “selfie.” B&W, kinda fun, but where did my nose go?  🙂

Happy Friday, peeps!
