‘Tis lovely

Ta Da!

Renee over at WritingFeemail gave me a blog award recently and today, I accept (via this post!)  Renee is generous and kind, well traveled and lovely.  She embodies what this is all about and I’m touched that she feels I do, too. Check out her writings here and thank you, sweet friend, for the honor.

Rules of  acceptance:
*thank the person who nominated you and link back to them in your post done!
*share 7 things about yourself
*nominate 15 or so bloggers you admire
*contact your chosen bloggers to let them know (this might take me a bit so please bear with me)

I’ve done up a few of these “about me” posts before so I am not sure how many amazing and enthralling facts I have left.   To that end, I’ll do my best to share something I haven’t yet before:

1.  I once wrote a fan letter to the Bay City Rollers and tucked my sister’s picture in with all my gushiness; she was older and far more sophisticated than the dorky 12 year old doing the writing.  I thought her picture would seal the deal and that Woody would write back professing his undying devotion. Surprisingly, I never got an answer.

why Woody, why?

2.  When I went back to the farm last fall, my brother directed me to a box of stuff from my university years.  Mixed in with the textbooks, class notes and cassette tapes was something that didn’t surprise me in the least — a photo book on Elvis.   He was my first crush and I still think he was the hottest man that ever lived; now that I think of it, I might have mentioned this before … heh heh.

Lawdy Lawdy Mizz Clawdy!

3. I met Donald Trump at NYC’s Plaza Hotel; he was polite and kinda hot.  He had a lot of bodyguards.

Why hello, MJ, and thank you for visiting the Plaza Hotel. You’re not bad yourself.

4. I flew on the corporate jet a couple of times; other than the ease with which we boarded & took off, it was a little over-rated.

meh!

5. My sister’s boyfriend landed a two-seater propeller plane on our gravel road and my parents let me go up for a spin. Seeing our farm and all my favorite places from up, up there?  Way cooler than the corporate jet, I can tell you that.

not quite this rustic

6.    Two places I’ve visited hold the most appeal for a return visit: Walt Disney World and Washington D.C.  You can draw your own parallels … hee hee!

it’s a small world after all …

7.  It’s my birthday today!  I love my birthday ~ always have and I always will :).  Usually today is the first day of summer, but I learned from Renee that it can change from year to year.  Really?   Ah, the stuff you learn out here.  Regardless, celebrate with me, won’t you?  Join Hubbs who affectionately refers to this day as  …  the longest dang day of the year. HA!

a few years back, good friends made me the BEST birthday cake ever!

And happy birthday to H.R.H Prince William who turns 30 today.   It’s wonderful to know that he’s found joy in his life; when I see a photo like this one, it’s hard to miss the body language of his parents, isn’t it?

And now to 15 bloggers I want to share the love with today — please visit and tell them I sent you on over. Everyone on my blogroll is there because I love their work but I am listing those bloggers that I know think might enjoy receiving awards. Cheers!

Welcome to Canada, eh?

photo from Carl Court, WPA Pool/Getty Images

Dear HRH William and Catherine:

Welcome to Canada, eh!

The young Royals… the handsome Prince and his beautiful bride, arrive in Canada today!  ( for details on the Royal tour, click here ).

I’m Canadian, born & raised and while I also have my American citizenship (yay!), there’s still part of me that remains intrinsically Canadian.  Given the right surroundings, my dialect easily reverts back to words that sound a bit like “oout” and “aboot” (out and about), I reference objects that baffle my children … like a “chesterfield” (couch) and I invite others to “supper” (not dinner, for dinner is at …lunchtime). 🙂

His Granny, our Queen, is on Canadian’s money, in the classrooms and many locales all over the country pay tribute to our British roots: cities like Prince Albert and Regina, Saskatchewan (where I’m from), provinces named Prince Edward Island and Alberta and streets named “Confederation.”  The list goes on.

In April, I wrote about the wedding and connected with so many of you; I also wrote about HRH Diana, Princess of Wales and pondered on if had she still been with us what that would have been like and now … Newsweek … deemed it appropriate to Photoshop an aged image of Diana walking next to Catherine. Diana, at 50 (her 50th birthday would have been tomorrow, Canada Day).

We just can’t get enough can we?

I don’t know about you but positioning the most famous woman in the world – Diana … Goddess of the Hunted .. next to Catherine … feels like we’re putting a target on Kate and releasing the hounds next.

It’s too much.

At the end of the day, there remains a young man who lost his Mum at a tender age; a young man who is striving to find his place on this .. their first Royal tour.  There’s a savvy young woman strolling confidently next to him, her long legged stride matching his step for step. Her face, accompanied by determined “set” to her jaw, reminds me so much of Diana .. but a young woman, nonetheless, who is determined to be relevant and to get it right.

I’ll be watching to see how they do … as I am sure she will, too.  But I wish the hounds could be restrained so we could let them do their jobs.

Oh .. there will be record breaking crowds straining to see their smiling faces and her fashion choices and yes there might be Quebecois protestors and most definitely wee children waving flags.  However, when it’s all said and done, these two young people, the future of the British Monarchy … will most likely enchant a nation and quite possibly the world.

It’s Canada’s 144th birthday tomorrow, Will & Kate.  Enjoy our country, the mountains, valleys, plains and people.  Hear our cheers welcoming you and tomorrow, on your Mum’s birthday, we’ll be waving our flags, singing “O Canada” and celebrating her, too.

Give them some space..

 ..Without us in it.

Yes  I’m one “of those” who got up early to watch the marriage of Lady Diana Spencer to HRH Prince Charles some 30 years ago.  Watched the introduction of pudgy baby “Wills” to the press and to the world.  Saw the footage of Wills taking off to pre-school with “Mummy” by his side.  Watched with sorrow as he and brother Harry walked solemnly behind her, as the Royal cortege snaked through London to the sounds of the horses clip-clopped feet.

Miss Catherine “Kate” Middleton appears down-to-earth, level-headed, and poised. She’s older and more experienced than virginal aristocratic Diana was upon her engagement.  But what we know about her is what has been carefully orchestrated for us to know; I don’t know either one but yet, somehow I feel I do.

So it’s with a bit of parental angst that I’ll take in all the excitement as the wedding plans unfold. After all, no one does pomp & circumstance better than the British Monarchy. But for Diana’s sake, I truly do hope they are granted a small measure of space…without us in it.
