Random 5 (Lion) Friday

It’s Friday! It’s time for some Random thoughts ~ here we go!

1 )  March roared in like a Lion and …well she’s still roaring.  Yesterday brought freezing rain and lightning, all the same day. Today .. rain and winds.  The grass is greening and the Robins are fat… hmm.  Maybe April will come in like a lamb?

2 ) Old favorites ~ I put a tee shirt on the other day and laughed because I remember when it was new. 10 summers ago.  I still like it and still wear it but now just around the house ’cause it’s a little worse for the wear.   It’s like an old friend, comfy, soft and forgiving.  It’s from the summer we took Mom on this trip, and that’s the shirt in the picture below. Sissy and I are going again in June and Mom will be with us in spirit, clapping her hands, grinning widely and taking it all in.

One of my favorite pictures of Mom & me… having a Killian’s in Branson, MO.  Summer 2007.

Of course we saw an “Elvis” show! Tony Roi as Elvis was AMAZING!

3 ) I wrapped up 7 consecutive weeks of heavy work travel and meetings.  Yesterday we were asked to set goals for the year – one of the goals surrounds meetings & outreach.  I smiled realizing I’m halfway to the goal.  Yes!!

4 )  It’s Friday.  I can hear the birds singing and my calendar, for the most part, is wide open today.  I have a few projects to tidy up then I’ll hand the reins to another and my team – and be off on v.a.c.a.t.i.o.n.   It’s 34F here and 75F where we’re headed …and there’s not a schedule in sight. Ahhh.

5 )    Amazing. Yes, that’s it.   Ha!

That or glasses!

How about you? What’s the oldest piece of clothing you still wear?  What are you looking forward to?  Have you set any new goals for the year?  Have you amazed yourself lately? 🙂

Happy Spring, peeps!

Random 5 on the 4th – the Capitol, summer tunes and more

I missed Random 5 Friday so instead am doing Random 5 for the 4th – here we go!

1. Today is Saturday, July 4th, our nation’s “birthday.”   The birds are singing, the weather is hot and hazy, and we are celebrating our nation’s independence by independently deciding to lay low, hang out pool-side, and chill.  Ahh.

Summer is here!

2.  One month ago I was in our nation’s Capitol on business.  Being a new citizen and representing my company in the highest offices of the land thrills me beyond description.   Walk 34 miles in heels in 90F heat? No problem.  Endure multiple security checkpoints? Sure.  Witness a vote from the Senate gallery?  Mind-blowingly cool. Sit down with members of the United States Congress over and over again? A-m-a-z-i-n-g.

on this day in 1776, the Second Continental Congress approved and adopted the Declaration of Independence. Happy Independence Day! https://www.visitthecapitol.gov/

3.  Listening to the radio last night something we heard brought us right back to our teens:  the hits-from-coast-to-coast!   Remember how every summer holiday weekend brought the top 40 countdown?  Did you ever sit next to the radio and record the songs played?  I remember my cousin and I shushing our brothers because a favorite song was coming up soon and we were determined to “catch it.”  I couldn’t tell you what happened to those tapes but I know there were a lot of them!

Shh … Rod Stewart is up next!

4. Speaking of music, we also reminisced about our experiences with the “Columbia Music House” collection and what a deal we thought it was — 11 choices for a $1.00 plus the added requirement to purchase more at  ridiculously inflated prices. We were kids, we didn’t know any better.  His choices included Ted Nugent, Supertramp and Chicago.  Mine included Elvis (duh!), the Oak Ridge Boys and Boston. Funny.

This was me at 15 and I think the worried look can be attributed to an overdue shipment from Columbia records! An Emjayandthem (C) photo

5. Stopped at the Farmer’s Market Thursday and picked up the biggest, tastiest tomato ever.  I did that so I could enjoy this for my lunch today:

Toasted Tomato Sandwich ~ ahh, Summer!

I hope that wherever my words find you, whether you’re American or not, you join us in celebrating her birthday today. I hope you take a moment to step outside and look up at the sky – our brilliant shared sky – and I hope that, just like me, you can do so without fear.

 ** God Bless America! **

What are your plans for the Holiday today?  Did you ever tape the top 40 hits off the radio?  Had a toasted ‘mater sandwich lately?

R5F – Easter

1. As a child, I was deeply conflicted that we called this day “Good” Friday.  I learned in Sunday School lessons what they did to Him.  How was that good?  It was years before I could disassociate chocolate eggs & ham dinner from suffering.

2.   I’m off work today. Yep, up early with no alarm, coffee sipped, laundry done, chores started.  Birds are singing, the sun is shining and I am luxuriating in the day.

3. Grands are coming tomorrow, and so is Great-Grandpa. We’ll have 4 generations together.  Chocolate eggs, ham dinner, no suffering.

Mr. Bun Bun visits the family across the street every Easter; here's our grandson being overwhelmed at the meeting! 2010

4.  Cleaning the house is simply more enjoyable with tunes.    I don’t mind scrubbing bathrooms and wiping down counter-tops when I’ve got Elvis, The Bee Gees, Al Green and Journey to accompany me!

So true!

Isn’t that the truth?  Google.images

5. Being home today allows me time to prep for tomorrow. But that’s not all. It’s an opportunity to step away and to reflect on the significance of this weekend.  To swing between the sorrow of the sacrifice and the joy of the gift.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life

on Hope

People don’t cry when they lose their hope. They cry when they get it back.
-Martha Beck, Finding Your Own North Star

It’s been there … waiting patiently for me on my end table.  I’ve reshuffled my reading pile and recently invited this book (Finding Your Own North Star) in. And now, now I’m puzzling and considering and journaling my way through it.

Wow.

I know why I hesitated: it’s a lot of work.

And I have enough work.

But .. it’s the kind of work that feels worth it.

Through simple exercises and thought-provoking questions, I’m discovering my true heart’s desires.

I’m starting to recognize and understand my internal compass.

Some thoughts and ideas I’ve met before and am well-acquainted with; others  I’ve never considered before now. I’m doing the work necessary to repair all that “soul shrapnel” ~ those long-held, mostly false beliefs that have stalled my progress.

If you wish to discover your own North Star, your own heart’s desire, I recommend this book to you.

Be prepared.

There are case studies to read, questionnaires to answer and exercises to ponder.

The work can be challenging and feel heavy at times. You may uncover self-truths you hadn’t yet acknowledged and they may frighten you away.  But I still say it’s worth it.

For hope.

Elvis has nothing to do with this post; He's just gorgeous in this picture is all. Happy Friday! MJ
