Random Five Friday – Rats, Math and Boom-Shakalaka

It’s a random August Friday – humid but with a cooler Fall breeze wafting in.   Summer lingers but Autumn is coming, we can feel it.

Here are 5 randoms from my crazy world ~

1 ) Recently hit a milestone – I celebrated 2 years Rat-Free.   2 years!  In that time I’ve had 4 different bosses to report to — but, thankfully, none have been rats.  Some have been more challenging than others but none have belittled me, stolen my work/ideas or endeavored to make me feel less than.  To the contrary.  It’s lovely living in a rat-free lane.  And once you’ve lived/worked/endured rat behavior – 2 years can pass and your tail still twitches at the thought of the experience.

2 )  Back to school for the littlest ones soon – I am so happy to be past the helping-with-homework stage! Essays, speeches, science, geography and social studies – sure, no problem. Math- ugh, no and where’s Dad??

3)  Vacation a few weeks ago was just wonderful.  I had the first 3 days largely to myself ~ yes I had big plans to head to the big lake then I remembered a certain festival going on so I skipped the crowd.  Instead I went to the backyard ’70s style — a big sheet spread out with my beach chair centered on it, a jug of Iced tea, books, snacks and sunshine.  I read and read and relaxed and read some more.  Hours in the sunshine, taking breaks to refill my water/tea and then later, after a shower, back out to the patio to read some more.  3 books, 22 magazines, and peace to my soul.   When friends ask my take on a given movie, in my head this is what I see:

meh

4 )  Sometimes it seems we’re surrounded by anger and division, chaos and hate.   I find myself, more and more, turning off the news and flipping back to simpler times:

5 ) And on a totally random note – this made me laugh out loud!   TGIF, peeps!

Care to share your randoms with me?

Random December Friday – Bats, Holiday prep, concerts and snow

Happy Friday!  I’ve been swamped at work, traveling, and double-booked socially. No time to write, and barely time to think.   Here are 5 random thoughts on a mild winter’s day:

1) “Don’t look up, we’re trying to contain the bat.”  Welcoming words as I entered a rural City office.  Arriving at a meeting I was met by two gals with brooms and determined looks as they shooed a bat down from the room’s cavernous ceilings.  Ahh – life in a small town!  They looked at me with trepidation and when I assured them I’m a farm girl and that Mr. Bat was simply looking for a warm winter home, they laughed and camaraderie soon followed.

2) Sissy and I talked last night and during our conversation it dawned on me that Christmas is 3 weeks from today. Other than presents purchased, I have nothing ready for Christmas. No decorating. No wrapping. No cards. No baking. Nothing.  The countdown is on, even if I don’t yet feel it.

3) On Sunday, I’m taking an auntie to see the “Trans  Siberian Orchestra.” She’s so excited she can hardly stand it. I know I will be once I get there.  My inner lizard is harping that I really should be wrapping, baking and decorating but I remember when we paid for the tickets a few months ago, I thought “you’ll need this by then.”  I’m betting I was right.

4) Living in a Nursing Home, Mom doesn’t have room or desire for many “things” so I put together a packet of small treats – snacks, candies, nuts, hand lotion, wet wipes, Chap-stick, Word search books, Sudoku, a pen, and some spending money, etc.  When I told her last night that a parcel was on its way,  she giggled like a school girl.

5)  We don’t have any snow – the weather has been unbelievably mild here in West MI and golf courses are opening again today.  The roads are great for travel and people are moving about with ease. I think it’s the lack of the white stuff that’s contributed to my denial of the holiday’s proximity.  Because when I was a kid, snow only meant one thing:

Christmas vacation! Whee!!

How about you?  Encounter any odd scenes lately?  Are you feeling the Christmas spirit yet?  Any snow in your neck of the woods?  Do you have an inner lizard snarping at you, too?

Random February Friday Five

It’s Friday! It’s time for 5 Random thoughts from my corner of the world!

1.  On a regular basis I wake up in the night with at least 600 things running through my head.  Think I could remember them now?  Nope, not a one.

three am

2. Friday is to the week like bread is to butter.  Speaking of, made Hubbs his favorite casserole earlier this week:  “Poor Man’s Chop Suey” – he had plate after plate of it, with a side of bread and butter, and a big ole smile plastered across his face.  As much as he watches what he eats, when a meal like this “magically” appears, he plows in like he’s been clearing a forest all day with his bare hands. And the comments of appreciation thrown my way make my hair curl ~ somethings really are that easy.

3.  Heading out on a road trip today – yay!  The weather is cold and clear, there’s no snow in my future and I predict random song singing all the way to my meeting place. 🙂

4.  Hubbs and I were invited out for dinner tonight.  There’s something very nice about being on the receiving end of an invite.  Even if you don’t go, it’s just nice to be asked, you know?  But we’re going and I’m glad.  Whee!

5. There are many heart-wrenching causes out there in the “GoFundMe” world —  and, as much of a softie as I can be, I’ve yet to contribute to one. Guy Wolfe is a blogger I follow because of his sincere faith and beautiful writing -he’s served as an inspiration to me more than once when my world felt less than inspired.  He recently wrote of a tragic turn of events in his world – and the HOPE {Hold On Pain Ends} he’s experienced since.  I felt compelled to ask how could I help?    He told me and I did.  Would you?  More info here.

John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you…”

And how was your week? Do you wake with a “to-do” list at 3:00 a.m. that magically disappears in the morning?  Is there a favorite dish your spouse or loved ones just love?  Do you say yes to road trips as often as you can? Have you ever given money to someone’s “GoFundMe” site?   Are you the inviter or the invitee in social situations?

Random March Friday – Roll with it

It’s here! Friday! Whoop!

1.  Been fighting a cold all week, trudging through my workout and work days and barely managing to haul my carcass out of bed every morning.  Daylight savings time kicks my behind every year.   I have never adapted to it and I doubt I ever will.  Why?  Read on.

2. Where I grew up, time didn’t change for any season or any one.  You adjusted  or you didn’t and there were no expectations about moving this or tweaking that.    You rolled with it, and that mentality has been instilled in me ever since.

3. After a busy week with my own job and department and covering for another (a role I never seem to shake) I got up early today, put on my out-of-office and called it a day. I have a capable team, my desk is in order and I happily crawled back to bed where I remained for several hours.  Ahhh.  Sometimes, we just need a time-out and if I’m the one to put me there, then so be it.

True that!

True that!

4.  Guess what sound we heard this week?  Snow … dripping off the roof.  A steady drip-drip-drip as the sun beamed brightly.   Could Spring be coming? I sure hope so.

5. Lastly, playing around with my cell phone, I tried out some new-to-me edits to a “selfie.” B&W, kinda fun, but where did my nose go?  🙂

goofing around with the cell camera :)

Why?

Last week was a good one, work-wise.  I got a lot accomplished,  and the highlight was the retirement of a long-term colleague.  8 hours in the car put me home late Friday night.  I caught up with Hubbs but soon found myself nodding off at 1o:00 p.m.  The best laid plans..

Saturday rolled in with a flurry of activities as we prepped the house for a college football-watching-party.  Gabbing with my pals, I didn’t see much of the game, but the food  and company were great. 🙂

Yesterday, I was up & at it early, buying groceries, doing laundry and cooking for the week ahead.

And here we are again, at Monday’s doorstep. I don’t know about you, but I need a day between Saturday & Sunday.

Have a great week, peeps!

Friday Monday

Friday vacancy

It’s Friday!

Friday! Friday! Friday!

A gloriously happy and favorite word graces our lips today! F-r-i-d-a-y!

friday cat

There’s always lots to be done:  calls to make, meetings to attend, and projects to wrap up. There are schedules to arrange, trips to plan, and conference calls to coordinate.  Presentations to line out, contracts to research and, and, and.

But.

Later today, when the sun starts to fade and I close my laptop and shut off my phone, there begins a bit of time that I like to call “purposeful nothingness.”

Sure there will be some cleaning and and some cooking this weekend but mostly? Mostly there will be vacancy.  There will be time … to just be.

Weekends don’t count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless.  ~Bill Watte

Are you able to purposefully “waste” time?

It’s Friday and I am THIS happy about it!

image from google.images.com

It’s not been a difficult week just a tiring nail-biting watching baseball-oh wait I still have to go to work kind of a week.   Holy Moley I am glad that this is not my regular routine; I’d never make it.

It’s Friday and I’m off on a road trip for work this morning… yes it’s raining a bit (first rain this and we need it) but the fall colors are gorgeous, the smells are stupendous and my drive is mostly … country – yippee-skippy!!  Houses, farms, orchards and fields … here I come.

Tomorrow Hubbs can enjoy college football in his jams (Michigan: Michigan State at Noon) and later, our beloved Tigers head to Texas for game 6!!

I’m planning on cleaning and cooking … and a bit of yard work and maybe even a nap this weekend.  And a lot of baseball, hopefully.

.:.

How’s your weekend looking, now that you can nearly see it?
