Random 5 Friday – Cancelled Subscriptions

It’s Friday – whew!  The past 3 weeks have been a blur but I’m home now (smile) and have the day off today (big smiles!).

1. The birds are chirping,  the sun is shining and coffee tasted especially good in my happy place this morning:

2.  Had an appointment yesterday to have a spot on my forehead looked at lopped off.  The freezing hurt more than the biopsy. But, Skin Cancer has already made itself at home in my fair-skinned family and I’m not taking  any chances.  That little old(er)lady with the big floppy hat?  Yep, that’s me!

3. Speaking of fruit, only two weeks till our Michigan cherries are ready!  I remember the summer that Mom and Dad took us (5) kids to visit our cousins in British Columbia.  The drive, through the Canadian Rockies and the Lower Okanagan Valley, took us right through orchard country.  Mom bought several cases of sweet Cherries and put them in the back window of the Oldsmobile where 5 Hooligans promptly took turns swiping them. Gulping them down secretly, thinking no one would know, would never suspect our cherry stained faces or fingers. Suffice it to say the road trip was delayed by frequent stops and stomach aches.  As an adult, my cherry-stained fingers take me right back to that summer. 🙂

Can't wait!

4.  Tomorrow we’re treating my Father-in-law to brunch.  We’ll be joined by our boys and grands.  4 Generations gathered together over French Toast, Ham and eggs.  Multiple conversations, laughs, abundant cuteness and love.  Can’t ask for more.  ❤

5. Read this quote and it reminded me to cancel a few subscriptions and continue to seek out battery chargers!

And how was your week?  What summertime fruit takes you back to your childhood?   What subscription do you need to cancel?

Random Five Friday, again

Yep, it’s back. Random Five Friday.  Why? It’s random – it’s easy – it’s fun.  Here we go.

1. Portobello mushrooms.  Why haven’t I tried these before now? Oh, they’ve been around, but I’d poo-poohed them as new age/hippie-dippy food. Not so, my friends.  Sauteed with Bok Choy & other veggies + a splash of teriyaki sauce = a chewy, crunchy and tasty dinner. Yum.

... delish

… These are regular mushrooms; I got wise AFTER this dish was made

2.  Hair.  When I get up every day, one side of my hair looks like it went to a party, partied too hard, and fell into bed.  The other side looks like it stayed in, balanced the budget, and read books.  And … the sides take turns. I’d like to know what this is all about.

3. Daylight.  There’s more of it. We’ve turned the corner, peeps.  When I leave the office at night, it’s not as dark as it was.   Driving home in twilight feels like we’re emerging from winter’s tunnel.    Ahh.

4. Permission.  My regular readers know that I ventured off to my favorite bookstore last week and emerged with a bag of delights.  I started reading a highly acclaimed book the next day and … meh.. I just couldn’t get into it. I either wasn’t in the mood or the story simply wasn’t that compelling.  I put the book back in the bag and chose another.  It was that easy and it’s taken me 50 years to be OK with doing so.

5. Something I’ve noticed lately is how much we talk about sleeping. It’s a safe topic, one you can reference at the water cooler, “Didn’t get my rest last night” or “Boy, I slept great last night.” There’s hardly ever an in-between.

Then I read this and thought … man, this is it.  This, my friends,  is truth:

I invite you to join me in something I’m calling the Adequate-Sleep Life-Enhancing Experimental Project (ASLEEP).
The requirements for membership are simple: we sleep until we aren’t tired, whenever possible. And I mean WHENEVER POSSIBLE, as in, if you show up at your best friend’s wedding tired, you take a pillow and sleep through the ceremony. Better yet, don’t show. Man up. Stay in bed. – Martha Beck

paws up!

How about you? Discovered any delights lately? Does your hair travel to far-off adventures without you? Are you seeing more daylight in your days?  What have you given yourself permission to do?   When’s the last time you felt rested?

You say it’s your birthday …

This is how old I feel today (that's me in about grade 4); an emjayandthem photo

and it is! It’s my birthday today! Whee!

And, at 48, I still love birthdays.  Mine & everyone else’s!

I know, I know. It seems childish but .. isn’t that the best part?

Last night, our youngest boy asked, “So Mom, when you’re older, do you still get excited about birthdays?” And I thought for a second, laughed and replied, “Of course!”   He countered with “Yeah that phone’s gonna ring all night long!”

And is that a bad thing?

I think not.

We went on to speculate how sad it would be to be all alone, to have no one who remembered, or cared enough to say so. The look on his face told me he couldn’t agree more.

Growing up, birthdays were a time to gather the family, have a wienie roast, a handful of chips, maybe a pop, and a big slab of home-made cake with iced cream on top.  Having a summer birthday meant a party near the end of school (we didn’t finish up until around now at my Canadian school).  It meant longer days and nice weather and Grandma and Grandpa visiting, he in a buttoned down shirt and she in a pretty pantsuit and jewelry. It meant Aunts and Uncles, cousins and friends and a $5 spot in a card. It meant three legged races, running through the sprinkler and opening presents wrapped in tissue paper.

You say it’s your birthday … and it is. 🙂
