Sunday in threes

1. From breaking a century-old record for November snowfall last week to 50F and rain today – what a weather swing we’ve had here in west Michigan!  I woke up to an uncommon sound for this time of year  – the drip – drip – drip – of rain. Bizarre. But the coffee sure tastes good this morning.

2. Making the grocery list this morning, I realized we’re only a few days from Thanksgiving.  It snuck up on me, again!  I blame the Christmas ads and holiday music for the distraction.  We’ll have our boys and grands – just the 6 of us – so it’s time to get out the cloth napkins, crystal bowls and decorations :).  And, as youngest boy happily announced, this week marks the official start of Cheese ball season!  For my recipe (and his favorite appetizer), click here for my Look No Further Cheese ball recipe.

Grandma’s Holiday table .. it took her days to set up!

3. I finally bought a tablet! No, not the AARP one, although that was tempting.  HSN.com has a great deal on a 10″ tablet – in my color choice which was  purple.  It arrived Friday and I have been happily playing around with it ever since.  For more on the deal, click here.

What are your Thanksgiving plans?  Any new toys land in your lap?  What food kicks off the Holiday season for your family?

Random Pulaski Friday!

It’s Random! It’s Friday! Here are 5 random Friday thoughts ~

1. In addition to today being smack-dab in the middle of a 19 day event known as Art-Prize (an urban, open art festival /contest where what the people think matters most) today marks the start of “Pulaski Days!Celebrating Polish heritage, this is a weekend-long event of kielbasa, pierogies, holubchi (cabbage rolls), beer and of course, lots and lots of Polkas.  Tonight we’ll meet up with friends at one of the Polish halls and eat, laugh and, of course, get our Polka on! I’ll check out the “art” next week – or not.

2. Took a road trip to points north Wednesday.  My meeting started early afternoon so I had time to meet my Father-in-Law for lunch first. Arriving at a restaurant filled with Seniors,  I spotted him at a table about as far from the door as you could sit.  It was the seat you take when you don’t mind everyone knowing you have yourself a lunch date.   It’s also the kind of place where people like to linger because the food is good, the wait staff is friendly and nearly everyone gets called “Honey” or “Sweetie,'” at least once. We enjoyed a tasty meal and meandering conversations and I couldn’t help but think of her, my late Mother-in-Law, and how much she’d have loved that moment.

3.  On Facebook, have you ever noticed that friends & family share recipes of really yummy/naughty foods …  at night?  Sometimes my morning FB feed is filled up with cheese bread, caramel cake and pie recipes.  Right after the posts on workouts.  Hmmm.

4.  Speaking of workouts, I think I own most of them. I get bored easily. There was a time I was running, but then my knees started hurting.  Then came yoga, which I still like, but have never mastered.  Walking bores me and Zumba … well that’s just an epic fail. The only program I’ve stuck with is this one:  Kettleworx.  I found it in the clearance rack (that could have been a sign …) and gave it a go.  I started with the smallest weight and worked up.  The instructor is corny and the editing isn’t great, but it’s a 20 minute weights workout with a slow-enough pace that I can actually .. f-o-l-l-o-w along.  And you know what? It’s working.  I am stronger – noticeably so – and my clothes are looser.   Hmmm.

5. And finally, I have made no secret of the fact that I’m a list maker.  Always have a list. Yes I never find money in a winter coat pocket .. I find a list.   And this little saying here hits way too close to home. You?

oh yeah!

oh yeah!

How about you?  Have you ever danced a Polka? What’s your favorite? (Mine is “Idon’twantheryoucanhavehershestoofatforme)  Any cool doings in your town this weekend? Are you a late night recipe poster? What’s your workout of choice?  And lastly … can you remember a phone number without writing it down? 🙂

What is Art?

Today, I ventured to downtown Grand Rapids to see some of the entries in this year’s “Art Prize,” an art competition that encourages public interaction .. and voting … to determine who wins the top prize of $250K.  Last year’s event brought over 200K people to our city and saw 1700 artists from 21 countries participate.  For more visit (http://www.artprize.org/ )

So off I went with my boss; he loves this stuff and, lucky for me, had already scouted out many of the exhibits during my absence last week.  It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and people – young, old, able and not as much, were out taking in the sights.  I stepped aside more than once to let large school groups pass; I slowed as elderly couples lingered a bit longer.  I held back so someone could snap a photo and even talked with a few of the artists.

I observed.   I wondered.  I enjoyed.

Some of the artwork is traditional enough that even I could recognize it as an entry; others were so abstract that I’m pretty sure the artist’s concept blew right past me. That’s OK, I’m no critic. I like what I like and I know others do as well.  Some entries were so powerfully done that I left feeling overwhelmed.  The talent and passion displayed was … moving.

We were able to view six of the top ten and many others that deserved to be there, in my opinion.

My favorite so far was this one: Mesmer Eyes…a Requiem by Kathy Goodell.  “It manipulates optical phenomena, light, transparency, and the oscillating tension between matter and illusion.” – reads the official transcript. All I know is that Mesmer Eyes made me stop in my tracks and stop to take another look.  I’m still thinking about it now.

What is Art?

A: It’s whatever we think it is.  No wonder people are so excited.

I felt the earth move … under my feet

Sitting in my West Michigan office earlier today, my chair started to sway. I felt light-headed, like I was experiencing BPPV all over again. Instant dread took hold.  But – as soon as it was happening, it seemed to pass. “That’s weird, I thought.”   Because I regularly battle low blood sugar, I immediately reached for a high protein snack.

Moving on to next task at hand, I didn’t think anything more about it until I read of the earthquake that took place in Virginia today around 1:51 pm E.T.   I knew that had to be it.

AP reports indicate that this was one of the largest ever recorded earthquakes in the DC area. The depth of the quake was only around a 1/2 a mile and that explains why so many felt it.

Immediately I thought of old friends .. and new blogging friends .. in and around that area.

I thought of all those who’d survived 9-11 in DC, New York and Pennsylvania and wondered if this caused instant panic in them, too.

I said a silent prayer that no one would be hurt or worse yet, killed.

How about you?  Did you feel the earthquake today?

Epic fail, Newsweek

Despite their best intentions, Newsweek failed to put this city down.

Yes, the economy has beaten many people down and some have left for opportunities elsewhere… but labeling Grand Rapids, MI,  a “dying city,”  (more here) only prompted our hearty Midwestern pride to shine even brighter.  A collection of creative Grand Rapidians created the video below showcasing our clean and a friendly Midwestern town – a city I’m proud to call home.

Take a peek; you just might want to come experience Grand Rapids, too.
