Exercise, Having fun and the “To Be” List

They say everything adds up and indeed it does.

In late June I started tracking my steps/normal activity + bouncing regularly on my Rebounder (indoor trampoline).  And no, it was nothing more than a realization that I was sitting too much and moving too little.

  • You won’t get the butt you want sitting on the one you’ve got!  😉

As background, I’ve been bouncing on and off since last Fall, but I finally committed to a regular schedule after joining a “Bounce Daily for 30 Days” challenge in a Rebounding Facebook Group {{ see, there can be good things in FB-land, not just political rants, recipes involving cheese or personality quizzes!}}

My beautiful bouncy Bellicon rebounder!

Since June 21 I’ve amassed 452K steps= 186 miles, and 18 hours of it is just from bouncing!

  • I like keeping track because keeping track keeps me accountable. I also like visuals, stats and bright colors.

But – as has been the norm for most of my adult career life, I get sucked into conference calls, long drives, last minute projects and fire drills … so when I finally arrive at home I’d come in all sloth-like.  I’d give hubby a passing “hi,” stumble my way through supper, slink into a book and head off soon for bed.

Kind of like our friend the Sloth below, moving at the speed of mud:

Not anymore.

With few exceptions, now, after work, I change into “home” workout gear (the not cute kind but no one sees so who cares kind!) – old jersey shorts, a soft tank top, sports bra and light runners (You can bounce barefoot but I have one wayward foot that pronates when I do. I call her Nancy. ).  I put my hair up, set a timer, crank up the tunes …. and work my way backwards – Example:

  • A Kitchen timer is typically set for 45 minutes
    • (When I started I could barely do 7 minutes. 45 mins is 6x that – SHAZAM!)
  • Before I know it the 35 minute mark comes around.
    • While I’m bouncing to Barry White, Al Green or Elvis Presley, in a blink there’s just 20 minutes to go.
  • 20 Minutes! Meh – here comes Tom Petty, The Temptations, Three Dog Night,  Mandisa or The Beatles
    • Soon only 7 minutes remain. …. what’s that you say?
  • 7 minutes? Heck that’s 2 songs . .. Rock N Roll!
    • Beep beep, timer chirps and I’m bouncing, sweaty, smiling and happy;
      • You’re welcome for the tour of the Olympic Stadium housing my mind games!

But, here’s the thing – those little mind games work.

Every. Single.  Time.

Because rather than announcing that I’ll “get 20 minutes in” … like it’s a hill to climb on the boring old dreadmill (that I’d likely skip) instead I imagine myself at the top of the curving hill … bouncing my way on down.  Yay!

Rebounding is THIS MUCH fun!

While bouncing I experience the following:

  • Thinking, remembering and plotting
  • Losing myself in a song,
  • Laughing to a memory,
  • Gnashing through a mistake
  • Marveling at my endurance, coordination and strength
  • Smiling loudly, sorting stuff out, thinking ahead
  • Daydreams
  • Epiphanies ping-ponging past me

See, it was while bouncing that I glanced at my 2018 Vision Board — the same one my Inner Lizard had harped at me to take down.   I heard her biting remarks – it’s soooo stupid, nothing’s gonna change, take it down, it looks like a grade-school girl made it … etc etc etc.

Then I read it again.

And with my hair flying,  my face sweaty and everything I had in full bounce, I might have cried just a little when I recognized six key words I’d cut out of a magazine last December:

  • FIND A WORKOUT YOU DON’T HATE

2018 Vision Board coming to life

So I ask you: is the exercise you’re doing fun?   Because if you’re not having fun I’m guessing you’re not doing it. Or you won’t be doing it (whatever “it” is) much longer.

It’s time to mix it up, I double-dog dare ya! And write a “To Be” list while you’re at it 🙂

Random 5 (Lion) Friday

It’s Friday! It’s time for some Random thoughts ~ here we go!

1 )  March roared in like a Lion and …well she’s still roaring.  Yesterday brought freezing rain and lightning, all the same day. Today .. rain and winds.  The grass is greening and the Robins are fat… hmm.  Maybe April will come in like a lamb?

google.images

2 ) Old favorites ~ I put a tee shirt on the other day and laughed because I remember when it was new. 10 summers ago.  I still like it and still wear it but now just around the house ’cause it’s a little worse for the wear.   It’s like an old friend, comfy, soft and forgiving.  It’s from the summer we took Mom on this trip, and that’s the shirt in the picture below. Sissy and I are going again in June and Mom will be with us in spirit, clapping her hands, grinning widely and taking it all in.

One of my favorite pictures of Mom & me… having a Killian’s in Branson, MO.  Summer 2007.

Of course we saw an “Elvis” show! Tony Roi as Elvis was AMAZING!

3 ) I wrapped up 7 consecutive weeks of heavy work travel and meetings.  Yesterday we were asked to set goals for the year – one of the goals surrounds meetings & outreach.  I smiled realizing I’m halfway to the goal.  Yes!!

4 )  It’s Friday.  I can hear the birds singing and my calendar, for the most part, is wide open today.  I have a few projects to tidy up then I’ll hand the reins to another and my team – and be off on v.a.c.a.t.i.o.n.   It’s 34F here and 75F where we’re headed …and there’s not a schedule in sight. Ahhh.

5 )    Amazing. Yes, that’s it.   Ha!

That or glasses!

How about you? What’s the oldest piece of clothing you still wear?  What are you looking forward to?  Have you set any new goals for the year?  Have you amazed yourself lately? 🙂

Happy Spring, peeps!

Random 5 Friday ~ communications & coincidences

It’s Friday at last~ but I’m helping staff a charity event tomorrow so I am home today – working & doing some of the chores now that I’d normally do tomorrow – laundry, groceries, yes + emails, conference calls and projects.

My life/world/schedule has been a whirlwind lately, with me clocking well over thousand miles this month and today’s only the 20th.  Whew!

So here are 5 randoms from my world recently:

  • At the State Capitol recently, I “randomly” met an Elected official at the restaurant where my team and I were having dinner – someone with whom I had a scheduled meeting with that same week. That random meeting turned into a good conversation and our getting to know each other.   I “ran into” her twice more before our meeting  and, as a result, it was comfortable, she was relaxed, and introduced me to staff as her “friend.”    Random happenings rarely are.

coincidence quotes

  • In the Capitol meeting with various officials, I saw a Facebook post from a friend’s son, a single father, there on a field trip with his daughter.  Now Hubbs used to babysit this boy when he was little, as his Dad (hubbs’ friend) was a Single Dad, too.   I haven’t seen him or her in quite some time but as we hugged in the hallway, our smiles said it all!  Random? Not so much.

  • Driving to a meeting recently, I felt nerves overtaking my confidence.  I knew I had nothing to be nervous about but the part giving me pause was the unknown – who would be there and how would they behave.  (Didn’t want to encounter yet another rat!)  2 of my favorite Gospel songs came on my music player and played back to back – as it was set to Random Shuffle – and I felt any anxiety simply melt away.  Parking my car and sitting quietly for a minute, I said a prayer of thanks for His grace and my strength, grabbed my purse and marched on in. 🙂

PrairieSunrise

  • Attending an event later in the week I spotted him before he did me – the work Rat was back.   I listened as he chatted about himself, him and his other favorite topic, him, then found myself pulled into conversations with other guests. (Thank you!)  I kept him in my periphery, hovering nearby like a gnat. He sat near me during lunch, offering updates on himself, his adventures, his purchases, him.  With pride, I watched my team listen but not lean in, and soon we all found ourselves engaged with other guests.   With no one to whine to or show off for, he slunk away.   I’m pleased I didn’t allow recent rat sightings to torture me and that affirmed my stated intolerance for mangy mammals.  Random growth, glad for it.

no more rats

  • Lastly, last weekend I attended my (soon-to-be) daughter-in-law’s bridal shower. I walked in, set my gifts down and a lovely lady smiled up at me. Something clicked and I knew – just knew -that we’d crossed paths before. I couldn’t place where or when until she spoke- with a lovely lilting English accent. And she seemed to know me, too. We put two and two together & realized we met last summer – in the MSP airport – as she & her husband were heading home to MI from visiting her English family, and I was coming home from my niece’s wedding/visit with Mom in Canada. At the time we had a friendly conversation and agreed that (English) Cadbury’s and Rowntree make the best chocolate (She chuckled at my stash of Canadian candy bars for our boys and the grands).  That lady in the airport? Grandmother of the bride, my soon to be daughter-in-law!   The world just isn’t that small and there are no coincidences. I still have shivers just thinking about the serendipity of it all.

How about you?  What random happening happened to you lately?  Do you believe paths cross for a reason?

Friday happiness

Friday’s here, but I think I skipped Wednesday and Thursday,  it’s been that kind of week.   Like stuffing 10lbs of potatoes in a 2 lbs sack kinda week. Travel, meetings, calls, travel, meetings, calls, repeat.

But, I got to talk with Mom last night – she’d not been feeling well so that made phone calls not an option for the past little while.  She’s on the mend now.  Happiness # 1.

Something I’ve been working on for 6+ months is finally coming to fruition. And it’s something good for my team. I get to tell them about it next week.  Happiness # 2.

Oldest boy’s fiance went bridesmaid shopping last night and grand-daughter MJ went, too.   I hear she tried on every hair accessory in the store, including this one:  Happiness # 3.

There’s been sickness all around – stomach flu, respiratory bugs – you name it.  Not sick.  Happiness # 4.

Living my life grain-free is now a way of life. Down 11.5″ and 11lbs in 30 days.  Feeling rested, healthy and in control – for the first time in years.   Happiness # 5.

What are you feeling happy about this week? What victory can you claim?

Rock on, friends!

Random Summer Sunday

It’s a steamy summer Sunday and here are 5 random thoughts from my world:

1) A few months ago I attended a workshop and the homework assignment was to ponder the answers to 3  questions: 1) what’s the greatest risk you ever took and how did it turn out? 2) How do you define passion? and 3) What’s your big “Super Hero” dream – i.e. what does “next” look like?  The first two questions were easy to answer (more at On Saying Yes )  But #3 had me stumped and, in the absence of one “big” vision, I realized I wanted to say YES to things I really want to do. I had worked hard to say “no” without guilt – all to make room for Yes’s.   Here’s an update on my plan: Yesterday, at a lake gathering, despite my fearful and fluttering gut, I said “yes” to getting in the middle of 3 on a Jet ski.  I yelled so much and laughed so hard that I said “yes” again – only this time on the back. Bouncing along the lake like a flag we all laughed and hollered and screamed so much that I was absolutely breathless when we returned to shore.  Others looked at me in astonishment – Hubbs with pride — my hair wrecked, my voice hoarse, but my face glowing with happiness.

What helped me say yes?  2 things:  A) I know the gal driving has a “need for speed” but she also loves me and would never put me in danger.  As we left the security of the dock, she turned back and said, “don’t worry I won’t go that fast,” and I answered with “Let ‘er rip” and she did. Whoo Hoo!   I don’t remember the last time I had that much fun.  The other?  B) the snarky look of another who was convinced I’d never go … ha ha, watch me sister!  Whoo Hoo!

jet ski

2) It’s steaming up to be a hot August day — 80% humidity, temps in the 90s.  I’m channeling my Grandma F. by cooking early while the sun is low.  The house smells amazing as pork chops and chicken bake – – and when they’re done and the kitchen is clean I’m headed to the pool with peaches, lemonade and books.  Hubbs is golfing and we’ll meet up later where he’ll surely bring up yesterday’s antics.   The perfect Sunday!

3. After Friday, I’m so looking forward to Monday! 🙂

no more rats4. Yesterday at the lake I hadn’t planned on going in the water, much less riding a jet ski.  So after the first run, my shorts and everything under them were drenched.  My friend, 6″ taller than me, loaned me some swim shorts while my clothes went into the dryer.  I pulled them on, twisted my tank top in a knot above my belly button, and rejoined the crowd.  Hubbs smiled and I laughed.  You see I dress pretty modestly and rarely does anyone else see me like that.  But it was a beautiful summer day and I’m not getting any younger and just when is a dose of radical silliness appropriate anyways?

“Oh my God, what if you wake up and some day you never got your memoir or novel written; you didn’t go swimming in warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big, juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like you did when you were a kid?  It’s going to break your heart.  Don’t let this happen.” – Anne Lamott

5.  Because of some family heart issues, I had a Cardiac Stress Test last week — and I kicked it to the curb. In thinking about it now, if they only knew how much this chick can handle they’d have cranked it up a little more!

P.S.  I’m just so happy! See # 3

A wonderful part to play

It’s Sunday, the sun is shining, coffee tastes great and later, I’m going shopping.

I don’t even like shopping.

I also rarely leave the house on Sundays.

That’s how much better I feel than I did a couple of months ago.

Why?

A couple of purposeful adjustments have brought profound dividends:

1. Earlier this month, this link – 30 challenges for 30 days of growth inspired me to try some new things.   However, the things I thought I’d do, I didn’t do.  The one I did, # 14, get up 30 minutes earlier, has taken hold and now – that time – that time is m-i-n-e – all mine.

2. I’m going shopping because I lost weight – yay! And I’m tired of looking like I’m sporting Aunt Edna’s clothes.  Plus someone said that larger clothes just add pounds to your frame.  Since I lost pounds from my frame, why would I add them back on?   And I’m going for color and lots of it.

3. A survey conducted by Ohio State University reports that sticking up for yourself with a hostile boss or co-worker is actually good for you – and I can attest that this is true.  About 2 months ago a person who likes to demean and dismiss me finally got a blast of what he deserved.  This is the same individual who has left me places and behaved like a crow as long as I’ve known him.   It wasn’t easy and I was scared to death but guess what?  What I had to say was the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.  And here’s the rub that took me years to learn – the truth shall set you free.

So very true. Google.images.com

4. It’s January and, often-times, it’s grey here in the Great Lakes State.  Being so close to Lake Michigan means we can go days – even weeks -without seeing the sun.  I’ve started bringing my own sunshine to my office:

a $8.00 pick-me-up that lasts all week long. Google.images.com

5. We’ve gained a new executive and my team and I will meet with him later this week – I wrote the Power Point overview 10 days ago and we are ready to rock n’ roll.   Hubbs knows me well and he gets the significance of the meeting.  He reminded me of a sign that used to hang in my cubicle years back, long before I’d ever thought of leading the Department, even though I already was.

2 for Tuesday

Summer is on its way and that means summer produce is, too — and that makes me happy!

1) Still fighting a cough & congestion so I whipped up something I love this weekend — my “Hey Now Salsa” oh it is so stinkin’ good!  Sent a container home with oldest son yesterday & kept one for me. Crunchy, fresh, zippy and delicious, it’s better every time I make it! And it’s going with me to top off my grilled chicken salad at lunch!

photo from healt-fitness.au (This has never lasted long enough for me to capture it on camera)

2) Bought myself a “Nutribullet” this weekend, too.  Why? I frequent the farmers market but often find I can’t eat everything before it spoils.  And spending all that money just to throw out wilted produce goes against my grain!  I’d seen the infomercial so I did the research and found it locally at “Bed, Bath and Beyond.”  With the the 20% coupon I found from last December I paid around $80  ~ ~ Did you know their coupons never expire?  Yes they have expiration dates but the clerks just ignore them – sweet!

Yesterday I made my first smoothie which consisted of spinach, 1 pear, a handful of blueberries and raspberries, water & some chia seeds.  Youngest kid liked the taste but couldn’t get past the green-ness of it.  I loved it and a concoction like that will be my breakfast today.   An extra 10lbs of winter pudge snuck onto my 5′ 3″ frame and I’m hopeful that these extra nutrients will help me not only shed the fluff + boost my immunity.  This latest bout marks the 3rd time in 5 mos I’ve gotten sick with the same thing  = time to pay attention, I think. I’ll share my thoughts and progress as I go 🙂

That’s my 2 for Tuesday — so, tell me, what gadget have you purchased recently? And, more importantly, did it work as promised?

Care to play along? On Tuesdays, pick a topic and segue into it!

A rather large amount of gratitude

“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.” – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Today, I woke to morning’s light peeking into the yard.

I woke to old dog, sleeping soundly and without pain.

I woke to a day filled with nothing in particular to do and all day to do it.

I woke to views like this one and my soul had no choice but to smile.

isn’t Autumn glorious? {{ Click to enlarge }} an emjayandthem photo

The rust of the week

Sunday has come around again and I’ve asked it to linger.

Friday night was fun, Hubbs and I had a date night in the garage. We laughed, we chatted, we waited in the rain for the Tigers to play but … no dice.

Yesterday was our “warrior” day – suited with Windex, paper towels, garbage bags and the vacuum, I tore through our bedroom, the one resembling a storage unit of late.
Inspired, Hubbs joined me and together we hauled out bags for Goodwill and loads of trash, too.  What a difference!

And now, Sunday’s arrived like the gift she is; the house is clean, the sun’s shining and  leaves are swirling down around the house.  Hubbs has Lions football and a Tigers’ double-header today, can you say ‘happy guy?’   I’ve got a pot of chili simmering on the stove and old dog waiting to go on our walk.

No offense to the other days, but Sunday can’t be beat.  She’s my favorite.

Beauty tips

Smile often. Smile hard.

“Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.” ~Mark Twain, Following the Equator

I’m smiling because I love this song and I think I love the video just as much.

I loved it so much I’ve added it to my MP3 player for the drive to work today.  But first I am going to stop and vote, and if that’s not something to smile about, well I don’t know what is.

What are you smiling about today?

It’s Friday and I am THIS happy about it!

image from google.images.com

It’s not been a difficult week just a tiring nail-biting watching baseball-oh wait I still have to go to work kind of a week.   Holy Moley I am glad that this is not my regular routine; I’d never make it.

It’s Friday and I’m off on a road trip for work this morning… yes it’s raining a bit (first rain this and we need it) but the fall colors are gorgeous, the smells are stupendous and my drive is mostly … country – yippee-skippy!!  Houses, farms, orchards and fields … here I come.

Tomorrow Hubbs can enjoy college football in his jams (Michigan: Michigan State at Noon) and later, our beloved Tigers head to Texas for game 6!!

I’m planning on cleaning and cooking … and a bit of yard work and maybe even a nap this weekend.  And a lot of baseball, hopefully.

.:.

How’s your weekend looking, now that you can nearly see it?
