Sunshine, questions and a big juicy life

A while back, a blogging friend Dor, awarded me the “Sunshine Blogger Award” – this award is as special as sunshine on my shoulders, sunshine on my toes… Or saying my future’s so bright I just gotta wear shades!

taken yesterday

Thank you Dor for your kindness & for including me. The rules are to do the following –

  1. Give a Big Hearty Thanks to the blogger who nominated you & link back to them (Check!)
  2. Answer the questions the other blogger asked you (See below)
  3. Nominate a host of others (rules suggest 8-11) but I’m just gonna leave this open whomever wants to play along and 😀
  4. List the rules/display the Sunshine Blogger Award on your site. (done)

Here are the questions Dor posed for me:

  1. Are you an introvert or an extrovert?  Do you wish you were the other and why?
    • Gemini ~ both, depends on the day and situation.  I can work the room at a conference or cocoon myself away with my books ~ it all depends.
  2. Are you an animal lover?  What pets do you have and love?
    • Yes, no pets right now but our Grand-Dogs and a Stray Cat warm my ❤ regularly
  3. Who was your favorite teacher and why?
    • Mr. Corbett; he was smart, strict and fun
  4. Have you ever had a bad habit you  broke?  What was it and how did you change it?
    • I’ve stopped asking for permission to enjoy myself!
  5. What is your favorite place to relax?  Explain where it is and why it helps.
    • Home or outside / outside at home / the beach!  I’m cozy at home and comfy outside, provided it’s not 95F+
  6. What is your favorite movie of all time?
    • One I watch every time it’s on is “Something’s Gotta Give.”  ~sigh
  7. Do you love to travel or do you hate it?  Why?
    • Love to travel for vacation and I tolerate business travel.
    • I love the coming & going, but I don’t love impatient flyers trying to fit a couch into the overhead compartment. Remember when flying used to be fun?
  8. Are you an organized or a disorganized person?
    • Organized. My grocery list is typed in the order of the store.  I admit it 😉
  9. Are you always late, early, or right on time?  Are there any advantages or disadvantages to your timing?
    • Always early. A disadvantage is that not everyone riding with me is ready on time!
  10. Do you create lots of blog posts in advance of publishing or do you do one at a time?
    • As they come to me
  11. What inspires you to create a blog post?
    • see answer to #1  😉

And here are your questions, friends:

  1. What’s a scent or fragrance that takes you back to summers as a child?
  2. What dessert item do you remember savoring at family reunions, parties or weddings?
  3. Name a song that makes you want to get up & dance.
  4. What ability do you wish you had and why?
  5. Who do you wish you could have a conversation with?
  6. And lastly, what are you looking forward to?

Random 5 Friday – at last

It’s Friday! Time for 5 random thoughts from the mystical, magical mind of MJ.   Or something like that…

1. It’s Friday, Friday, Friday!!!   Just finished a LONG couple of days in meetings with our new corporate Exec.  The sessions were intense with questions,  charts, maps, background info, and a data dump.  Holy cow, even I am sick of those charts and numbers BUT I am also energized because both my team and I knocked it out of the park.  Nothing feels as good as 1) knowing what you know 2) knowing what you don’t and 3) being able to let someone else lead, too.    Never met the man before but he’s sharp, shrewd, ethical and fair.  That’s the kind of Leader I can get behind!

Lots of "take aways" but it's all good - whoop!

Lots of “take aways” but it’s all good – whoop!

2.  The morning of the first day’s meetings I was getting the last of my things packed and decided to groom my eyebrows.  You know, ’cause that’s what you should do when you’re nervous: wield something sharp.   Now, as I’ve gotten older, eyebrows have started growing weirdly and nobody wants some Andy Rooney’s looking back at them in a meeting.   Well you can just imagine what happened: yes, I lopped off the corner of one.  It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good, either.  I did the only thing I could think of: set it down and laughed out loud.  Thank goodness for eyebrow pencils and make up tricks learned in the drama club.  Hubbs about died laughing at that story last night and I do telling it.   🙂

3.  Right after that moment I read this quote and felt myself relax.  I gave that girl a few pats on the back for all of her hard work to-date, told her to rock n’ roll and then off I went.

Try it .. it works.

Try it .. it works.

4.  At dinner the first night, our new leader asked each of us about ourselves so he could get to know us better:  favorite movie, music, our background, how did we get to the company we work for, do we have a family, etc.   Everyone took their turns and the information shared was both revealing and interesting, making for great conversation, laughs and side conversations. I watched him artfully do this and thought, “nice work.”  In all the years I’ve worked at this company no one in leadership – not one – had ever done this.   Around the table we went – and when we all finished I realized no one had asked him.  So I did.  And as his eyes met mine and he began to talk about his career, family and interests I took my very first lesson.  Nice.

how people feel

5.  My regularl readers know I’m more of a reader than a movie watcher but when asked to share a movie I turned to the table and said, “Shrek because who doesn’t love Donkey?”  The table roared, he got a glimpse into my personality, and it was all good.

How about you? How was your week?  Ever had a grooming mishap?  If asked these questions, what would you share?  What Shrek character is your favorite?

Happy Friday, peeps!

Friday the 13th, Random 5 and 50 Shades

It’s Friday! It’s time for 5 random thoughts (not 13!)

1. Two road trips this week and I always notice things alongside the highway.  There’s the usual – a tire, a deer, maybe some garbage.  What gets my attention are the shoes.  There usually is only one and it’s often upright, like someone stepped out of it.  Weird.

2.  There’s a movie opening today based on a book involving grey ties.   Did I ever tell you that Mom bought me that book for my birthday years ago?  She made it clear she had no intentions of reading it but I think she did it to scandalize me and my sister … and it worked.    The two of us traumatized our grown kids by leaving it out on end tables.  The comments of horror from my sister’s daughters and the looks our boys shot my way were well worth it.  Maybe that was Mom’s point, to stir things up a little, and to remind us that we always have a choice.  God, I love her.  The book series itself?   Definitely mature reading but in there lies a love story –and how the love of a good woman can repair and restore even the most damaged man. It’s a story as old as time and romance novels sell well for that reason.  Oh, and here in Grand Rapids, there’s a local man running a petition to stop theaters from showing the movie: the petition has 2,000 signatures.  Impressive except for the fact that 9,000+ advance tickets have been sold.   I’m probably not seeing the movie but that fact makes me snicker.

3. Here comes Valentines Day! Earlier this week Hubbs was over-scheduled and racing around like he tends to do.  I had some extra time that morning so I left for work, made a stop, and swung back by the house with breakfast in hand.  The look on his face?  Absolute delight.   Why wait for 2/14 to show love for the one you love?

You're the best!

Happy Valentines Day!

4.  I’m off to the Dentist for more crown restoration.  Yes – dental work on Friday the 13th – nothing could go wrong with that, right?

5. Driving yesterday I came across a tune from years back.  Do you remember 867-5309 or “Jenny” by  Tommy Tutone?

*867 was the phone exchange in the town where I attended High School. Never knew anyone named Jenny though.

How was your week?  What are your Valentines Day plans?  Going to see any new movies? Know anyone named Jenny?

You don’t say

It's a bit hard to believe, but Kevin Photo credit - L.A. Times' Katie Falkenberg

Kevin Costner is 60 today.  I don’t know about you but my first reaction to hearing that was “Holy wow and Hubba hubba!”

I’m 51; if he’s what 60 looks like I say yes to aging beautifully!

What is your favorite Costner movie?   Mine has to be the epic western “Dances with Wolves” followed closely by the twisty and suspenseful “Mr. Brooks.”

Happy Monday, peeps!

Simple pleasures

So .. a while ago, I earned an award at work.  Who doesn’t enjoy being appreciated?  But .. the fun thing about this is that it’s not the kind of award that hangs on your wall and needs to be dusted. Oh no, this award is given in points … points that can be redeemed via a website.  A site loaded up with all kinds of cool stuff.

There’s stuff that’s fun, stuff that’s practical and stuff you’d probably never get any other way.  It’s a little decadent. And who doesn’t enjoy being decadent once in a while?

Restaurant Gift cards. Housewares. Luggage. Jewelry.  Sports & outdoors. Or … something that makes a popcorn fiend sit up and take notice …something like this:

Hello gorgeous!!!

I admit it. I’m a popcorn junkie. Certified.  I’ll happily endure a bad movie just so to have theater popcorn.

:: one of the worst I’ve ever seen ::

The Wabash Farms Whirley-Pop popcorn maker makes Theater-style popcorn – at home – in about 3 minutes. Every kernel pops and every single one is scrump-dilly-icious.  As in 8 million times better than microwaved.

I’d share but … it’s time to reorder!  Get yours at or on Amazon.

What simple pleasure have you indulged in lately?

4 Nevers

Every once in a while I’ll come across a movie that I’ve already seen but forgotten.  A girlfriend recently reminded me of “Hitch” and I instantly thought of how much I’d enjoyed it.  It’s my kind of movie – a sweet, frothy romantic comedy. Will Smith’s character is smart and adorable and the film is chock full of juicy quotes worth holding on to.

What I most loved about this movie are the gentle reminders throughout that everyone – every single one of us – just wants to be loved …  we all want to connect and most of us stumble a little bit on our way to love.

Here’s a favorite quote from Hitch:

“Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink.

But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love.

If you must steal, steal away from bad company.

If you must cheat, cheat death.

And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.”

Great words to live by.

For a preview of “Hitch,” check out the trailer below:

Christmas for Valentines?

image from

Have you noticed an abundance of red and pink everywhere?  Red hearts, pink gorillas, candy, candy, candy – chocolate, toys, stuffed roses, plasticized roses, and more.

Yes, it’s hard to miss that Valentines Day is a-coming!

Valentines Day transports me back to being a grade school girl, of punch out Valentines and parties at school with sugar cookies, candy, cake and punch.  No veggies & dip for us. Nope, it was sugar-induced decadence all day long.  Decorating a shoe box and filling everyone’s with sweet notes. Remember how there was a big Valentine included in the assortment? I always assumed that was for the teacher but there were only a few over the years that I doled it out to.

One year, I had to miss the class party because I’d had a violent bout of chicken pox and was far too itchy (and contagious) to go near the school. Grampa F., a big shouldered Swedish bear of a man, stopped by on his way back from town with a box of Valentines for me to assemble. He even stayed to help me punch out the cards and assemble the envelopes (remember having to do that?).  One of my sweetest memories of that gentle soul, but I digress.

So, now, when I see the Kay Jewelry commercials declaring “every kiss begins with Kay” or the Jane Seymour ads touting her upside down hearts that look like someone’s butt, I just have to smile.  Sorry, Jane, you’re lovely but .. those are some ugly necklaces.

Valentines Day takes me back to being a young girl and the feeling of a sweet innocence; wondering if a certain someone might write me a special note on his valentines card that year.  It reminds me of young love, of having a paper heart stuck on my locker, and the thrill of wondering who put it there.  It reminds me of being a young parent to our small boys and watching their excitement as they punched out the cards and wrote names on them, usually accompanied by complaints over how “stupid” it was that they had to do “all that writing.”   Now I’m grown and in a happy, well established marriage where we do thoughtful things for each other on a regular  basis, not just on a Hallmark holiday.  But sometimes, if I’m feeling sentimental, I turn to a little Christmas movie I adore called “Love Actually.”   (see trailer below). It’s sweet, lovely and romantic and that’s just right for me.

 Happy Valentines Day!

My favorite romantic movies (in no particular order):

  1. Love Actually
  2. When Harry Met Sally
  3. Notting Hill
  4. Titanic
  5. Crossing Delancey
  6. Something’s gotta Give
  7. You’ve got Mail
  8. The Wedding Singer
  9. Sleepless in Seattle
  10. Calendar Girls
