The idea

“Use it or lose it” they said.  I rolled over vacation time last year to this one and it’s timing out so .. with that .. I’m on vacation this week — and following the “no plan-plan.”

Purposeful nothingness.

Reading.

Sunshine.

Iced Tea.

Flip flops.

Farmer’s Market.

Pedicure.

Reading.

Phone chats with siblings and cousins.

Music.

Firing up the grill.

Shutting down the laptop.

Reading.

Naps.

A stretch of days with nothing to do and all day to do it.

You can get old pretty young if you don’t take care of yourself.

I’m feeling younger by the minute!  🙂

When’s the last time you checked out? Have you ever had a week of “purposeful nothingness?”

Kisses, smiles and summertime

Summer just started and * gasp * it’s already scheduled  … I have too many vacation hours and must use “it or lose it” (not happening).  Not a terrible problem to have I know so, for that reason, I’m booking off soon to enjoy a summer  that looks like this:

“It’s a smile, it’s a kiss, it’s a sip of wine … it’s summertime!”  ― Kenny Chesney

 What’s your summer looking like?

Day 14 – Hello Friend

Today marks 2 weeks that I’ve been off work ~ two whole weeks!  Yes I’ve worked some, I have to or what will greet me on my return will resemble an avalanche. But two weeks!  Here are a few things learned over this delicious break:

1. The power of sleep. I’ve gained a new appreciation for sleep’s ability to restore & renew.  With no schedule I’ve slept longer, deeper and better in the past 10 days then over the past 365.   I can see sleep’s gifts in my face -lines softened, bags retreated and  even my hair looks healthier.

2. The comfort of quiet.   I’ve resisted the urge to fill my days with “to-dos” and have perfected enjoying my chair, sipping coffee and reading books.  The T.V. has stayed off; the phone is silent.  Chores and tasks remain and Jimmy Cracked Corn ’cause I don’t care!

This is only half of my haul!

This is only half of my book haul!

3. Enjoying real foods when actually hungry.  Not being on a schedule means that I don’t eat lunch because it’s noon; I wait until I’m hungry and sometimes that means lunch is at 2:00 p.m. instead.  I’ve enjoyed my Nutribullet smoothies, fresh pears, clementine oranges, old-fashioned oatmeal, and Greek Yoghurt throughout the course of the day ~ and felt lighter, energized and satiated.  There’s something to this that I plan to continue.

4. Taking a break from everyone else. Other than my immediate family I’ve not seen anyone else for two whole weeks!  We have a 90th birthday party to attend on Saturday.  Three weeks ago this would have felt like one more event shoe-horned into an over-scheduled schedule ~ today I find myself looking forward to it.

5. Understanding .. or not. A work colleague expressed disbelief at my long winter’s break and dismay that I wasn’t getting on a plane to go “somewhere.” To her, time off is not time off unless you’re traveling to some exotic destination.  I frustrated myself trying to explain my stance to a person who is never going to get it and ended the conversation with this, “because I need it.”  And there it is, folks.

“Never forget that once upon a time, in an unguarded moment, you recognized yourself as a friend.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert

When was the last time you did something just for you?  What was it and what did you learn?

Time outs aren’t so bad after all

“Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.” –Marthe Troly-Curtin

So, I’ve written about being stressed and as sick and tired as I am of feeling that way, I’m pretty sure you, dear readers, might be sick of hearing about it, too.

You see, sometimes, in the day-to-day race that is life, I can get so caught up on the merry-go-round that I no longer hear the music; all I can hear is noise. I can no longer see the intricate carvings of the horses or enjoy the lights because it all flies past me in the blur known as “get-it-done.”

When I stop feeling exhilarated and start feeling woozy, it’s time to stop the merry-go-round and get off.

And for that reason, I’ve taken two – count ‘em – two vacation days: tomorrow and Monday.  Call ’em mental health days, call ’em what you will – I’ve checked out.

I’ll make lists and I’ll ponder, I’ll putz and I’ll organize but … I’ll also sip coffee, catch up on your blogs, daydream and hang out with old dog. I’ll get in a run or two, I’ll accomplish a few things and ignore twice as much; I’ll dine with Hubbs and chat with the kids and maybe even sleep in … just a little. I’ll watch the World Series and chat on the phone with Mom and my cousin; I’ll cook and I’ll sing and I’ll visit with friends.  I’ll take four days to step away and be my very own battery charger.

And come Tuesday, when the Wurlitzer starts cranking out that old familiar tune, maybe I’ll smile the smile of the invigorated and not the one that’s frozen and spent.

Do you make it a point to put yourself in time out?

Nothing to do .. and all day to do it

Summer vacation ….Oh how I love you.

The past week of purposeful nothingness has been just what I hoped for and exactly what we needed:

The pinch of summer sun on shoulders, ears and noses.

Freshly grilled meals. Crunchy summer salads, orchard fruits, farmers market finds and ice cold beer.

Wrinkling of toes, too long in the pool.  Water splashed onto my book.

The daily presence of friends, Tigers baseball and a  steady shuffle of songs on the mp3 player.

The squeaky voices of delighted grand-babies.  The oohs and ahhs from fireworks.

Summer means grandbaby MJ celebrates, too; (C) an emjayandthemphoto

Flags waving in the summer breeze.

Finches fattening at the feeder.

Naps.

Meandering mornings watering plants who will mourn vacation’s end.

The lazy evenings watching fireflies dance through the yard.

Summer nights under the stars, talking, laughing, living.

Shared glances, twirly skirts, golf dates and date nights.

Summer vacation.

An absence of schedule.  Lack of obligation. No particular place to be.

Summer vacation, oh how I love you.

Purposeful Nothingness

the 'Northern Lights' .. a must add to any bucket list

An absence of schedule.

Lack of obligation.

No particular place to be.

Naps.

No socks, no clocks, no dress code ….

Instead …. frogs singing me to sleep and songbirds chirping in my ear at daybreak, cups of really strong coffee… with cream. No skim, 2% or Flavoring … cream.  Old dog snoozing happily in the porch.   Too many books, watermelon for breakfast followed by a dip in the pool.  Sunscreen, steak marinating, and cherries from the fruit stand up the road.  Oscillating fans, screen doors, pool floaties and tan lines.  Skirts, heels, lip gloss and painted toes.   Linen shorts, baseball on the radio and supper on the patio … Tee times, bug spray, Tank tops, flip flops, and summer rains.   Grilling out with Roy Orbison, Elvis and Tom Petty at the water’s edge.   Windows open, daylight lingering…  and a firefly’s dance within reach.  Barbeque sauce, summer salads, and happy hour with friends.

Every year, the hubbs and I take 1 week off to do all of  the above …and this year?

It starts this afternoon. 🙂

How ’bout you? Any vacay plans on the horizon?
