Random 5 Sunday – 5 years

It’s a beautiful sunny Sunday (yay!) so here are 5 randoms from my little corner of the universe.

1  Cooked yesterday and doubled everything. Why? I’m dropping off half to oldest boy and the grands later today.   The work/school/homework schedule is just nicer when you have “extras” around.  Homemade soup, sloppy Joe’s, Game day brownies  and more.   To quote Mom, “Love is Groceries.

2 It was Mom who taught me the significance of caring for others.  On Mothering is just one of many posts I’ve written about her. She taught me so many things but, most importantly, she taught me how to mother.  And, like her, I’m fierce — no apologies.  Because of that, I can’t wrap my head around that our grand children’s mother left them like she did.   But it was my wee Mom who reminded me He gave our boy big shoulders for a reason and sometimes Mom & Dad are the same person.

3  Stopped the other day to take this picture – October will end soon and all of this will pass.  Don’t miss it.

4  I write as means to formalize my thoughts, connect-the-dots and express myself.  Through this experience I’ve connected with many of you, and one I’ve even met in person (lucky me).   When I write what I know – posts about life, relationships, personal growth, faith and home – you chime in and I love that so much.

5 Going back to Mom, she was moved to Nursing Home placement this week and, when asked how things were going, her response made me laugh.  “I’m doing the best I can and managing to stay out of trouble… so far!”  This center is small, 17 beds, and in a rural setting, which is much more her style.  Both my sisters are certain she’ll get more personalized care and that’s of comfort to us all.  Thinking of her it hit me that 5 years ago today I published my very first blog and, not surprisingly, I wrote about  another life lesson learned from Mom.      5 years, 824 posts,179,273 visitors, still writing.    Thank you for reading along.

Happy Sunday to you!  When you look back over your blogging lifetime, what do you see?

R5F – October, Crock Pots, Coincidences and Songs

It’s Friday (whoo!) It’s random (whee!) It’s October! (yay!) Here are 5 randoms from this corner of the globe:

1 Hello October!  Next to September, this is my favorite month …. colors, smells, sights,  cool air, crisp nights, crock pot dinners, windows cracked, cozy blankies, time to cozy up and read … ahhh.

2  Speaking of crock-pots, a friend just bought her very first one.  First. Crock Pot. A Midwest girl who never owned a crock-pot?  Guess you hear something new every day!  🙂 My newest favorite recipe is this one: salsa chicken.  Ready?  Dump 6 large frozen chicken breast in the crock pot, season with whatever you like (I use Mrs. Dash Onion {salt free} and a bit of fresh garlic) then pour a medium-sized jar of salsa (about 10 oz) of mild, spicy, whatever over the chicken.  Put the lid on, turn the crock pot on low, and leave for the day. That’s it.  6-8 hours later you’ll have tender, juicy and tasty chicken that is easily shredded for Tacos, wraps, poured over rice, topped on salads, etc.  Extra tip? When fully cooked and shredded, stir in 2 tbsp of cream cheese for creamy chicken goodness.  Yumm-o!

3  Earlier this week, one of Mom’s cousins (whom I’ve never met) sent me a friend request on Facebook.   She grew up in British Columbia, Canada, but lives at the Easter shore of Virginia.  When I looked up where she lived, I could see that she’s pretty close to my Virginia friend  Dianna – whom I met through this blog.  Sometimes the world just isn’t that big is it? 🙂

4  Tomorrow I’m going to visit a friend who recently had surgery; she had been told one thing about the recovery time then found out the healing time will be much, much longer.  I remember the same happening when I had foot surgery- and that feeling of being “stuck” inside.   I know she’s a reader and we both love coffee – so I have huge bags of magazines and books, coffee and chocolates and more – because when you’re laid up and bored, sometimes the very best therapy is coffee with a girlfriend and a healthy dose of chocolate!

5   Leaving work closer to 7 than 5 the other night, I reflected on the day, the pace, the craziness that is my work life right now.  I still love what I do, but I’m just as happy to get in the car and crank up the tunes – this one came on and it’s funny how, two days later, I’m still singing a song …. You?

What do you love about October?  Are you a crock-pot user?  What’s your “go-to” fall recipe?   What plans do you have this weekend? Any visits in your future?

Random Five Friday ~ You can do magic

It’s Friday! It’s Random! Here are my 5 random thoughts on this Friday!

1. We’ve had day after day of bright sun + orange-leaves-so-bright-you-could-drink-from-them colors.  Everywhere I look is a photo opportunity and a reminder that I’m so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers.

2. Oldest boy was faced with a dilemma recently: ex-wife landed a new job which entailed two weeks of training in Chicago.  He normally has the wee ones 2 week nights + 3 nights every other weekend.  She called him in a panic referencing this, that and the next person who could share their care with him.  His response couldn’t have made us prouder, “They’ll stay with me. It’ll be fun.  They can have 2 full weeks in one place and we’ll make it work.”  Well, it is a big deal for a single working Dad who has a physical job with varying hours.  But as we saw how delighted they were for all that time – doing homework, picking pumpkins, helping him in the yard, playing with their neighbor friends and leaning into a routine, we knew that even though he’s not yet mastered the pony tail, he has all the important stuff figured out.

3. When I heard the news out of Ottawa … my heart sank.  Giving thanks for bravery and selflessness and for a young life so tragically lost.

4.  Next week I’m attending a conference with my team.  A couple of days ago I was asked to address the 400+ attending.  I accepted and soon felt a wave of “oh geez what have I gotten myself into.”  Thinking back to 4-H public speaking classes and similar but smaller opportunities over the years, my own sayings came to mind: “Go with what you know.”   The PowerPoint is ready and my comments  prepared ~ and when the time comes for me to stand and deliver – I’ll lean into it, smile and check that off my list!

5. I heard this song the other day and was reminded how great this band was – great melodies, catchy lyrics and beautiful harmonies.  I think I’ll play it on the way to the conference – as a reminder that I can do magic, too.  🙂

You can do magic
You can have anything that you desire
Magic, and you know
You’re the one who can put out the fire

And how was your week?
