Random 5 Sunday – Family, Flea Markets and Pie

It’s Sunday and I was up early with the sunshine, sipping coffee, packing for my week ahead and thinking it’s about time for 5 Random Ramblings from my world.   Pour some coffee and join me, will ya?

1 )   A Family brunch yesterday had a host of familial layers all at the same table: Uncles and Aunts, Cousins and kids, Step-in-laws, son’s girlfriend and me.    Uncle Ron sat next to Hubbs who sat next to cousin Johnny who sat next to me.  Facing them was youngest boy, his girlfriend, an Auntie, Grandpa, a cousin and another Auntie ~ I nodded my head to the youngest ones to get them to look ~ and they caught it — all of the guys, various ages but similar in looks, structure, and all folding their arms up high on their chests, head tilted just so to listen to the  story being told.   The story-telling was being done by another cousin,  directly across from them, whose arms were no longer folded. Like them, when talking, his arms and hands were wide open and out as he drove home the point of the story, “and then they brought ME the mailbox they’d ran over like I’m supposed to go back and fix it!”  Laughter filled the restaurant and diners nearby looked our way, mostly with understanding, one with annoyance but many with longing.  Family.  It’s big and it’s noisy and it’s wonderful. Gotta love it!

2 )  Fall is here and glorious ~ colors are magnificent, the sky is blue and deep and wide and the air is dry and crisp.  It won’t last, I know.  But windows are open, supper is in the crock-pot and I’m loving every minute of it. Fall is my favorite season and I wish it could stay just a little longer …

3 ) With Fall’s arrival comes the start of indoor trade shows ~ I remember going as a girl with Mom & Dad.  This is shopping I love — wandering around from item to item, chatting with people and trying new things.  The shows we attended were Agriculturally focused with cattle breeders, farm implements and a host of novelty items targeted to the wives and kids accompanying said farmer  ~  the latest & greatest “as seen on TV” gadget,  smoked meats, candles, jewelry, make-up, toys, knives, you name it.  One such event rolled into town this weekend and a friend and I decided to go — and yes we saw the latest & greatest “as seen on TV” gadgets, sampled smoked meats, smelled the candles, laughed at the toys and books and “man-cave” items and more.   The usual suspects were there ~ selling Cinnamon almonds, home-baked goods, and of course, knives.   I came home with jewelry, Avon hand lotion, a pie and some herb-flavored butter.   Fun!

Like this but with 20x the people ~ Shipshewana on the Road

4 ) Traveling this week to a corporate conference ~ I’m looking forward to seeing my colleagues again.  I’m sure to learn a few things and I’ll do my best to avoid snakes (lipstick can’t cover fangs).  Over my working career, I’ve dealt with my fair share of Rats and Snakes and there’s always been a part of me that wants to ask this question, even though another part of me already knows the answer:

“Were you always such a snake,” the child asked, “or did you grow into what you are?”
― Dean Koontz, Odd Apocalypse

5 )  At the Flea Market yesterday I bought my friend and I each a sweet potato pie.  “Uncle Calvin” was selling them and promised the pies were his “Momma’s” recipe. That’s enough for me.

Before anyone freaks out about my non-sweets craving self enjoying a pie, I’ll share some perspective:

“The” pie .. next to my hand 🙂

Yep, I’ll scoop out the contents, skip the crust and enjoy every morsel.  It’s a taste and that’s enough for me.

So what’s new in your world? Had any pie lately?

Random 5 for Labor Day – Ice Cream, escape artists, Apple Season and days off

Random 5 for Labor day ~ here we go!

1 ) Years ago my cousin had a summer job at an ice-cream parlor. I spent the night with her to help eat at the shoppe.  We made up every concoction possible, ate gobs of ice cream, butterscotch, hot fudge, nuts and whipped cream.  I recently realized that I don’t crave ice cream ~ pretty sure that gluttonous memory is why.

Remember?

2 )  Labor Day.  The end of summer as we know it ~ and leaves here are already turning.   But wait – here’s the BEST news – Honey-Crisp apples are nearly ready!!  Oh the joy cannot be contained!  You can still buy some of last year’s apples for $5.00/lb — but soon the orchards near me will sell FRESH apples (bumper Michigan crop this year!) -I can get a dozen for ~$7.00 and youngest boy and I will gobble them down like iced cream!

3 ) Speaking of youngest boy, he has a  girlfriend and the girlfriend has a dog named Morty.  I like her already. And isn’t that the greatest name?  Apparently Morty likes busting free from the confines of the kennel; the kid has since nicknamed him “The great Mordini.”  Ha ha ha.

who can resist? Not I.

4 )  I love Fall.  Apples. Leaves. Bright sunny days. Cool, crisp nights.   I. Love. Fall! ❤

5) Hubbs and I both took tomorrow off !  I’m planning on sleeping in followed by coffee & a lazy brunch then a massage and whatever else I feel like doing – or not !!  Whoo Hoo!

No stress, no dress code!

What’s your Random 5 looking like today? Ever over-do it on a food you love?  What happened?  Are you seeing signs of Fall where you are?  What’s the last kind thing you did for yourself?   Happy Labor Day everyone!

Random 5 Monday?

It’s Monday and I’d like whomever stole my weekend to please return it! 🙂  Here are 5 Random happenings from my world:

  1. Monday. Coffee.  Coffee. Coffee.

monday awesome

2. Felt like spring this weekend and everyone was outside. We saw neighbors we hadn’t seen in months!  Hubbs and I took a drive and toured some – gulp – homes. Yep, we’re making a move to down size.   Here’s my version of the perfect MJ room:

3. Here’s his:

4.  Saw many houses and most were too big.  Saw a few that were just too small. Didn’t see any that were “just right.”  Feels like 3 bears should be right around the corner!

5. Totally random but this made me laugh out loud.  Ever have a friend or relative say this to you? This little girl’s expression might be how I felt when they did.  Ha!

Random 5…. Monday

It’s Monday and I’m off today … so here are 5 Randoms from my week.  Ready? Let’s go.

1 Took a road trip with Hubbs over the weekend  – we had a family wedding to attend so we left Friday, got stuck in traffic, and chatted all the way to our destination – Frankenmuth, MI — a Bavarian town with cute shops, yummy foods, and the world’s largest Christmas store.   Yes Hubbs went in.  Neither of us lasted long and we didn’t buy anything. But he went in and experienced it and I love him all the more for that.

2 We spent a bit more to stay downtown so we could walk to everything.  And it was a good thing we did, because the “all you can eat” Chicken dinner nearly put us down.  Might have been the German beer, but it could have been the four salads, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, dressing, gravy and veggies.     Pretty sure there was an army of Grandmas back in that kitchen!

3 Saturday morning, I took a brisk walk and enjoyed all of the “in & out” shoppes — even though I’d been to the big Christmas store, THIS is what got me in the spirit.    I don’t particularly enjoy malls and this is why — I remember the stores of my small town, and the window displays of Christmases past.  Peeking in, hearing a bell jingle as I entered, made me feel just like this little girl right here:

4 On one of my stops, I ventured into a store that I’d been in before. See I bought a little keepsake here for Mom years ago and she had it hanging in her bedroom at the farm.  She really can’t take personal things with her to the home, there are several who “wander” and things will turn up missing.  This little item is the one thing I’ve asked for specifically and sissy has it put aside for me.  There’s no commercial value, but I loved it then and I love it now and when it comes back to me, it’s going in my bedroom, too.

A Victorian Prayer

5  We enjoyed the wedding and the visit with family but not the kids who were allowed to run laps at the reception. At one point, I asked them to stop.  They smiled and promptly continued.  Hubbs and I were both “community raised” and if our parents hadn’t seen it, an auntie or neighbor surely would have.  And none of them would have held back from correcting us AND telling our parents.  Anticipating the answer, I asked what would’ve happened to him had he dared behave like that.  His response matched mine: “I’d have received an invitation to my own funeral.”  Where were the parents?  On their phones instead of on their kids.  ~sigh.

How was your week? Taken any road trips lately? When’s the last time you felt like a kid?  What happened to make you feel that way? Do you prefer “in & out” shops or shopping malls?  When parents let their kids run wild, what is your response?
