Five minutes for 5 Random Friday thoughts. Go!

1.  Protein shake for breakfast – feels like cheating 🙂

2.  Here’s a flashback to about 1968: me with one extremely large Tomcat, Tigger.  There were a lot of little kitties around who looked like him:

I swear I wasn't strangling Tigger! an Emjayandthem (C) photo

3.  No acuptuncture for me today.  Hubbs pointed out my 4 hour Dental appt that starts 15 min from now — yeah, probably not good to add PINS to the mix.  That’s Tuesday instead :).

4. It’s Friday!  Time to get my groove one … here’s the “real” clip to the song I posted a few days ago — have some “Uptown Funk” featuring Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars.  I love the dance moves, the horn section and the “super fly” feeling to this song.

5.  This picture inspired this post.   Dance like no one’s watching .. because they’re not. They’re doing their own thing or on the smart phone!

Random 5 Friday – at last

It’s Friday! Time for 5 random thoughts from the mystical, magical mind of MJ.   Or something like that…

1. It’s Friday, Friday, Friday!!!   Just finished a LONG couple of days in meetings with our new corporate Exec.  The sessions were intense with questions,  charts, maps, background info, and a data dump.  Holy cow, even I am sick of those charts and numbers BUT I am also energized because both my team and I knocked it out of the park.  Nothing feels as good as 1) knowing what you know 2) knowing what you don’t and 3) being able to let someone else lead, too.    Never met the man before but he’s sharp, shrewd, ethical and fair.  That’s the kind of Leader I can get behind!

Lots of "take aways" but it's all good - whoop! Google.images.com

Lots of “take aways” but it’s all good – whoop! Google.images.com

2.  The morning of the first day’s meetings I was getting the last of my things packed and decided to groom my eyebrows.  You know, ’cause that’s what you should do when you’re nervous: wield something sharp.   Now, as I’ve gotten older, eyebrows have started growing weirdly and nobody wants some Andy Rooney’s looking back at them in a meeting.   Well you can just imagine what happened: yes, I lopped off the corner of one.  It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good, either.  I did the only thing I could think of: set it down and laughed out loud.  Thank goodness for eyebrow pencils and make up tricks learned in the drama club.  Hubbs about died laughing at that story last night and I do telling it.   🙂

3.  Right after that moment I read this quote and felt myself relax.  I gave that girl a few pats on the back for all of her hard work to-date, told her to rock n’ roll and then off I went.

Try it .. it works. Google.images.com

4.  At dinner the first night, our new leader asked each of us about ourselves so he could get to know us better:  favorite movie, music, our background, how did we get to the company we work for, do we have a family, etc.   Everyone took their turns and the information shared was both revealing and interesting, making for great conversation, laughs and side conversations. I watched him artfully do this and thought, “nice work.”  In all the years I’ve worked at this company no one in leadership – not one – had ever done this.   Around the table we went – and when we all finished I realized no one had asked him.  So I did.  And as his eyes met mine and he began to talk about his career, family and interests I took my very first lesson.  Nice.

how people feel

5.  My regularl readers know I’m more of a reader than a movie watcher but when asked to share a movie I turned to the table and said, “Shrek because who doesn’t love Donkey?”  The table roared, he got a glimpse into my personality, and it was all good.

How about you? How was your week?  Ever had a grooming mishap?  If asked these questions, what would you share?  What Shrek character is your favorite?

Happy Friday, peeps!

ha!

ha!

Random February Friday Five

It’s Friday! It’s time for 5 Random thoughts from my corner of the world!

1.  On a regular basis I wake up in the night with at least 600 things running through my head.  Think I could remember them now?  Nope, not a one.

three am

2. Friday is to the week like bread is to butter.  Speaking of, made Hubbs his favorite casserole earlier this week:  “Poor Man’s Chop Suey” – he had plate after plate of it, with a side of bread and butter, and a big ole smile plastered across his face.  As much as he watches what he eats, when a meal like this “magically” appears, he plows in like he’s been clearing a forest all day with his bare hands. And the comments of appreciation thrown my way make my hair curl ~ somethings really are that easy.

Poor Man's Chop Suey

3.  Heading out on a road trip today – yay!  The weather is cold and clear, there’s no snow in my future and I predict random song singing all the way to my meeting place. 🙂

amen to that! google.images.com

4.  Hubbs and I were invited out for dinner tonight.  There’s something very nice about being on the receiving end of an invite.  Even if you don’t go, it’s just nice to be asked, you know?  But we’re going and I’m glad.  Whee!

5. There are many heart-wrenching causes out there in the “GoFundMe” world —  and, as much of a softie as I can be, I’ve yet to contribute to one. Guy Wolfe is a blogger I follow because of his sincere faith and beautiful writing -he’s served as an inspiration to me more than once when my world felt less than inspired.  He recently wrote of a tragic turn of events in his world – and the HOPE {Hold On Pain Ends} he’s experienced since.  I felt compelled to ask how could I help?    He told me and I did.  Would you?  More info here.

John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you…”

And how was your week? Do you wake with a “to-do” list at 3:00 a.m. that magically disappears in the morning?  Is there a favorite dish your spouse or loved ones just love?  Do you say yes to road trips as often as you can? Have you ever given money to someone’s “GoFundMe” site?   Are you the inviter or the invitee in social situations?

Random 5 Friday and a good day for a house

It’s Friday! Here are 5 randoms from my week:

1. It’s cold.  Bitter cold. Freeze your nose, cold.  And as Mom always said, “a good day for a house.”  The winds are howling, the snow is blowing, and I am happy to not have to be any where but here.

cold and more cold

cold, cold and more cold

2.  New Year’s brings resolutions and with it comes Facebook friends posting updates on newly adopted exercise routines. Saw this and laughed out loud.

Yep! Google.images.com

3.  I’ve learned something else being home the past two weeks:  I barely eat.  Yes, without stress and chaos, I don’t graze and rarely feel hungry.  I’m leaning into it and, when hunger appears, I eat.  Nutribullet at least once a day.  Other than that?  Not much.   Interesting the toll a steady dose of stress takes on us and how quickly our bodies respond when treated with a little T.L.C. Hmm.

4. Yesterday, had he lived, would have been Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday.  And had he lived, I’d still be swooning.

Random 5 Friday – 12/12

It’s Friday! It’s Random! Here we go …

1.  I work with someone who lies.  A lot.  He lies so much he forgets which lies are which and gets tangled up in them, like someone trying to walk through a jump rope.  One of these days he’s gonna get busted and land on his face and  I kinda hope I’m around when it happens.

Karma's coming!

2. Monday I endured 5 – count em- 5 hours in the Dental chair.  4 old crowns were sawed off and I was prepped for 4 new ones.  My face still hurts and soup is my new best buddy.  Bah!

3.  Speaking of today, I’m off to meetings at the Capitol.  Ever heard the term “Lame Duck?”  Quack Quack 🙂

Tonight we’re meeting friends for drinks & yums at a cool old burger joint downtown. Tomorrow night is bowling with friends and Sunday? Sunday I’ll just collapse :).

R5F ~ All you need is love

It’s Friday.  Thank goodness!  And with that, here are my 5 Random thoughts :).

1. Why is it that a full work week after just a few days off feels like the longest week ever?    It’s like we jammed 10 lbs of potatoes into a 2lb sack, not kidding. Long days, lots of meetings and trips coupled with all the “to-dos” of this time of year left me reeling.

Made it to Friday! Google.images.com

2. Text reminders.  It’s the end of the year so I’m jamming in Doctor and Dentist appointments while I can.  Now I receive multiple text messages to confirm my appointments and to remind me of my appointments, too. All so I can arrive early and wait for the Doctor or Dentist who is always … running behind.  Maybe the office staff should text them. Grr.

3.  Started Christmas shopping last Sunday and took today off to finish it.  I’m hoping for an absence of crowds and looking forward to lunch with a good friend whom I rarely see. And if we run over and the shopping doesn’t get done today, so be it. 🙂

4. Speaking of Christmas we had our office Holiday luncheon yesterday ~ about 20 of us went to one of those Hibachi restaurants where the chef cooks in front of you and tosses samples your way.  The food was delicious, the camaraderie was great but I’m not a seal and this girl is not diving for broccoli.

5.  Reading the above, I’m sounding snarky. One of my employees recently introduced me to Willy Chirino, a Cuban-born entertainer who covers The Beatles with a Salsa-funk sound.   It was a great reminder that no matter the day, all we need is love.

Random 5 Friday – Karma and Snow

It’s Friday! It’s time for 5 Random thoughts! Here we go!

1. Remember last Friday when I referenced how pitiful Hubbs was with his cold? Yeah, I should not have done that. About noon it hit me – a tightening between the shoulder blades – and with hot eyes and hurting everything, I headed for home. Not before I stopped for essentials like groceries, Puffs and dinner.  And yes I felt the wheels of the Karma bus back right on over me.

2. Sorting through some stuff lately, I came across my hot rollers.   Bear in mind I have naturally curly hair. Like, really curly. Holds a curl for days.  I’ve had the rollers since college, they still work, and every once in a while I’ll roll my hair just to see what happens.   If I’m feeling adventurous I’ll add hair spray and double it in size.   I can see myself doing this for years and years and years.    No idea why.

3. Lately I’ve been enjoying TV shows that demonstrate decorating on a budget. You see I have no ability in the home decor  department.  That gene skipped me.  No, I was too busy riding my pony and pretending to be “Billy Jack  than be caught inside doing artsy stuff. So it was not a proud moment when I realized that most of the things we own are on Decorators “do not do” list.   Yep, decorating wise, I need help and lots of it.

Yes we have some silk plants. We also have a fake Christmas tree, too!

4.   I like making lists and checking things off so, generally speaking, I don’t procrastinate.  But this was funny!

procrastinate

5.  All in all, it was a bit of a rough week and I’m glad Friday is here.  None of us felt great, it was -something zero outside every day and we got pounded with snow.  Case in point, one day it took 65 min. to drive 7 miles to the office.   No snowmen yet, but I can see why things like this could happen:

And how was your week? What styling aids have you owned or used for 30+ years?  Please tell me you have silk plants, too!

Random 5 Friday and a time for Home

It’s Friday! Time for 5 random thoughts. Here we go!

1.  Hubbs has a cold.  Call the CDC.  Seriously. He’s moaning and limping around as if he’s dying. Every move is announced.  Every. Move.  I’m doing my best to help and comfort him but … it could be a long winter.

2.  Like other parts of the country, winter slammed into us on Monday.  Employees in ‘da U.P. (that’s Yooper for people who live in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) received 35-42 inches of snow in 2 days.  Yesterday, here in Grand Rapids, we got a light dusting and everyone lost their minds and forgot how to drive.  It could be a long winter.

3.  At the office we had some difficulty switching our system from a/c to heat.  Last year we switched it on our own and managed to successfully blow cold air …  harder.  It’s finally pushing  heat and employees are no longer wearing “Oliver Twist” gloves at their desks.   It could be a long winter.

It was that cold. Image from Pinterest.com

4.  When I was a kid we couldn’t wait for winter!   We couldn’t wait to use our toboggans and super slider snow skates and crazy carpets.  And snow days?  Snow days were the BEST!  Farm kids were designated a “town buddy” to stay with if bad weather picked up -as it often did.  And who could forget two – count ’em – two whole weeks off for Christmas break to snowmobile, snowshoe, ski, skate, slide and more? Now – as an adult – winter is just not as much fun. It’s work. The “s” words that brought so much joy have been replaced with new ones: scrape, slide, swear and soldier through.  Every year I try to get out to do some of the fun “s” words but … It could be a long winter.

5. On a positive note, our house feels very cozy, I’ve got plenty of books and projects to keep me busy and, once Hubbs feels better, fireside chats will return.  Maybe it won’t be a long winter after all.

R5F … and corn

It’s Friday! It’s Random! Time for five random thoughts.

Random Five Friday pic

1. 48 shopping days left till Christmas.  I know, I thought the same thing: why rush it? First of all, Thanksgiving is next.  We’ll gather together and enjoy my favorite meal.  There’s no gifting stresses and no mess to clean up.  And – everything tastes even better the next day.  I’ll have pie with my coffee, read blogs and shop online, and avoid the madness that is Black Friday.

2. Switching the radio from a steady stream of political ads last week, I stumbled upon Christmas music.  On two stations!  Sorry Frosty, not yet.

Hold the tunes, pls.

Hold the tunes, pls.

3.  I love corn. Corn-on-the-cob, kernel corn with butter and black pepper, creamed corn and of course, popcorn.  I love corn.  For the most decadent creamed-corn recipe possible, head on over to Leah’s place.  It’s been part of our holiday meals since 2011 :).

4.   The local radio station asked listeners to share their quirks.  Example:  the DJ said he always puts on his to-go coffee cup lid so it’s pointed away from the seam.  All I could think was, “Doesn’t everyone?”   I do have a coffee quirk, though. After I pour it, I microwave it for 30 seconds.  I like my coffee hot.  Not burn your thigh off hot, just hot.  Yep, I might be quirky, too.

5. Saw this and laughed out loud. Pretty sure you will, too.  Have a great day, friends:

Halloween Random 5

It’s Friday! It’s Random! It’s Halloween!  Here we go….

1. I don’t know about you but Halloween was one cool night when I was a kid. Having it land on a Friday was like a gift from above.  A Friday vs. a school night meant one or two extra stops and no strict bedtime ~  that gave us more time to check for razors in apples (never happened) and inventory the goodies in our bags.  Yippee skippy!

Google Images.com

Google Images.com

2. I was a complete tomboy as a kid.  Sporting a rats’ nest of curls, jeans and a hoodie, I just couldn’t be bothered with dresses and all that stuff.  When you’re busy riding your pony and picturing yourself as some kind of “Billy Jack” outlaw, dresses just get in the way.   So it made perfect sense when Mom bought me a Princess costume and mask.

It was hot with sharp edges ... kinda Zombie like, really. Google.images.com

Hot with sharp edges … and kinda creepy. Google.images.com

3.  At school we had to go around town and collect money for Unicef.  This was done before the hot dogs and the games and treats and the candy toss.  I’m pretty sure that, between the 8 of us in my grade, we collected about $1.49.

Anybody else remember these?

Anybody else remember these?

4. Our forecast is for 40 F temps and a sustained wind of 45 mph.  We’ve been to lots of Halloween parties over the years and, now that I think of it, it’s always been cold … but that has yet to damper our fun.

Hubbs and I and Halloween fun a few years back; an Emjayandthem (C) photo

Hubbs and I having Halloween fun a few years ago; an Emjayandthem (C) photo

5.  Remember me fretting about giving a speech before 450+ people the other day?  I was nervous and woke up with a swirly stomach feeling.  I had a little chat with myself and the gist of it was that I know what I’m talking about and, on the topic in question, more than anybody in the room. And you know what?  I nailed it!  That feeling of accomplishment lingers with me still. Whew!

So .. do tell .. what were your Halloween traditions?   Do you still celebrate Halloween?

I still miss singing for our treats and receiving home-made caramel apples & goofballs.

Happy Halloween!

Random Five Friday ~ You can do magic

It’s Friday! It’s Random! Here are my 5 random thoughts on this Friday!

1. We’ve had day after day of bright sun + orange-leaves-so-bright-you-could-drink-from-them colors.  Everywhere I look is a photo opportunity and a reminder that I’m so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers.

2 doors down & Taken on my cell phone. An Emjayandthem(C) Photo.

2. Oldest boy was faced with a dilemma recently: ex-wife landed a new job which entailed two weeks of training in Chicago.  He normally has the wee ones 2 week nights + 3 nights every other weekend.  She called him in a panic referencing this, that and the next person who could share their care with him.  His response couldn’t have made us prouder, “They’ll stay with me. It’ll be fun.  They can have 2 full weeks in one place and we’ll make it work.”  Well, it is a big deal for a single working Dad who has a physical job with varying hours.  But as we saw how delighted they were for all that time – doing homework, picking pumpkins, helping him in the yard, playing with their neighbor friends and leaning into a routine, we knew that even though he’s not yet mastered the pony tail, he has all the important stuff figured out.

3. When I heard the news out of Ottawa … my heart sank.  Giving thanks for bravery and selflessness and for a young life so tragically lost.

4.  Next week I’m attending a conference with my team.  A couple of days ago I was asked to address the 400+ attending.  I accepted and soon felt a wave of “oh geez what have I gotten myself into.”  Thinking back to 4-H public speaking classes and similar but smaller opportunities over the years, my own sayings came to mind: “Go with what you know.”   The PowerPoint is ready and my comments  prepared ~ and when the time comes for me to stand and deliver – I’ll lean into it, smile and check that off my list!

5. I heard this song the other day and was reminded how great this band was – great melodies, catchy lyrics and beautiful harmonies.  I think I’ll play it on the way to the conference – as a reminder that I can do magic, too.  🙂

You can do magic
You can have anything that you desire
Magic, and you know
You’re the one who can put out the fire

And how was your week?

R5F – Say Hey ~I love you

It’s Friday and time for 5 random thoughts ~ here we go:

1. Last night I stopped for groceries ahead of the weekend. Why? Those cute lil’ Cub Scouts who camp there on Saturdays, that’s why.  They’re adorable, irresistible and I am absolute putty in their hands. Yes, I dodged them and fully admit it.  Please forgive me.

2.  Have a couple of friends going through trying relationships of late.  It’s hard to witness because sometimes, as an “outsider,” you can see things the person “inside” cannot.  Doesn’t mean you can say anything though.

True that

3.  We’ve had cooler temps lately but loads and loads of sunshine.  I don’t know about you but the sun shining just makes everything happier, brighter … and better.

4.  My cordless phone battery died.  You know the one that made us feel so “with it” cause we weren’t tethered anymore? Well here’s the kicker: no one sells cordless phone batteries now.  I can find a replacement online but .. is this a sign that people really have  dropped the land line?  I still have the (now-ancient) plug-in-the-phone-jack-and-work-without-batteries-phone.   When our power goes out and the cable/phone modem is kaput, it still works.  Hmm … perhaps the cordless phone is out and the land line remains!

Like this .. only beige. Google.images.com

5.  Heard this song in an airport recently and I’ve been playing it ever since.  Check out Michael Franti & Spearhead singing a happy Reggae-inspired “Say hey I love you.”

And how was your week? Dodged any cute kids lately?  Any relationship advice to share? How are the temps in your neck of the woods?  Do you still have a land line?  Are you digging any new tunes of late? Do tell!
