Random 5 December Friday ~ Days off, kid time, new years and music

It’s the last Friday of December, how did that happen?  That means it’s time for 5 randoms from my world.

1 )  Been on holidays for 7 days and have 5 more to enjoy before I head back to work.  Today is that day:

I’ve gone to bed when tired and gotten up when I’m not.  I’ve relaxed, stretched, played and laughed.  I’ve watched movies, read (2) books and started a 3rd.    Ahh … leaning in.

2 ) Over the summer I took care of our grand-daughter different times while her older brother was at camp, we dubbed those days “Camp Nana” because it was all fun and games. During this Christmas break I spent the day with both grand kids while their parents were at work.   Dad had left them a “to-do” list and I helped them tackle it+ added more~ that visit soon became “Nana Boot Camp” – ha ha! But they did great: they worked hard to tidy up –  they picked up, vacuumed, folded, dusted, put away, emptied the dishwasher and completed about 4 trash runs. They didn’t complain because I was right there working beside them – we spent the rest of the day cooking, playing games and playing outside.  (Our snow is long gone!)  It wasn’t lost on me that it was “Boxing Day,”  the same day Mom used to round us kids up to help her tidy the house.   The grands were proud of their efforts and joyful at the many rounds of dice, Jenga, and Uno we played.    Time marches on but kids are still just kids and, from my experience, kids spell love T-I-M-E.

Grandson learning how to make Nana’s “Sloppy Joe’s”;  coincidentally this was the first recipe I ever made in 4-H. An Emjayandthem (C) photo

3 )    In many ways this has been a trying year and  I won’t be sad to see it go.   This picture sums it up:

4  )  As grueling and demanding and relentless as my job can be I was delighted to be awarded $$ for notable project work recently completed.   Smiling, I knew straight away where that $$ was going == AMAZON.  Funds are in my account, and I’ve already made one purchase ~ something perfect for our gloomy west Michigan winters.  Arriving tomorrow, I plan to use it daily ~ whee!

  • Product notes:  For millions of people, light therapy can make a not-so-great day much better – and brighter. The bottom line is, almost none of us get outside as much as we should to get as much natural full spectrum sunlight that we, as humans, need. Our bodies have evolved to actually require sunlight, and when we don’t have enough we can be groggy, irritable, unfocused and more. To make it worse, as days get shorter in the fall and winter, many people are affected by winter blues. This full spectrum light therapy lamp can help make you happier year-round.  Amazon $40

5 ) Saw this video last night and have watched it (and sang along) about 5 times already.    Trees will be bending, indeed.  SANG it, kids!   And props to the Choir Director ~ how I’d love to be part of a choir like this one!   🙂

So, what’s going on in your world?  Care to share?  And, ready or not, here’s to 2019!

Summer just opens the door and lets you out

It’s summer ~ we’re in the throes of the season now, temps hovering in the 90s with the % of humidity matching.

In no particular order are just some of the summer delights we’ve been savoring:

  • Morning coffees on the patio
  • Fireflies fluttering at dusk
  • Strawberries, corn-on-the-cob and 7-Layer Salad
  • Anything grilled  ~ steak, chicken, shrimp and more
  • Hubbs golfing later and me reading later, all to summer’s golden light
  • A soft serve ice-cream, half chocolate & half vanilla, with half of it running down your arm
  • Stray cat visits
  • Kids playing in the sprinkler and Yellow finches mining my flowers
  • Couples walking together and dogs walking owners
  • The joy of a new book and the laziness of summer magazines
  • The smell of fresh limes on my fingers after squeezing into a margarita, the kiss of summer on my shoulders and the tangle of  beach waves in my hair

  + + + + + + +

“Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people. For those few months, you’re not required to be who everyone thinks you are, and that cut-grass smell in the air and the chance to dive into the deep end of a pool give you a courage you don’t have the rest of the year. You can be grateful and easy, with no eyes on you, and no past. Summer just opens the door and lets you out.” -Deb Caletti, Honey, Baby, Sweetheart

What have you indulged in this summer?

Working out & Tacos

  • Hubbs and I had big plans for this weekend.

Big plans.

  • He was going to organize the garage so I could start parking inside.

Never happened.

  • I was going to sort through benefits statements and file them away.

Never happened.

  • We were both going to work out.

Never happened…

want to run a mile or eat 10 tacos.jpg

  • But we did have tacos.

Man, I feel so accomplished! 🙂

How’s your weekend?  Any intentions get scrapped?

Quiet islands

I read once that a Sunday well-spent brings a week of content.

shh_Sunday

I completely agree.

However – having taken Friday off – I actually had Sunday .. yesterday.

Waking to a quiet house – hubbs golfing and youngest boy working – I poured my coffee and took a seat in the screened-porch.  Listening to the birds chirp and caw, I reveled in the peace and quiet.  Later I meandered back inside to a stack of magazines and let the sunlight warm me as the page flipping began.

When it was time to dress for an evening meal out with friends, I felt as rested and restored as a day at the spa might bring .. without the cost.

I don’t know what all this week has in store for me but I am thankful to have had two Sundays ahead of it.

Do you keep a small part of a Sunday for yourself?

Friday vacancy

It’s Friday!

Friday! Friday! Friday!

A gloriously happy and favorite word graces our lips today! F-r-i-d-a-y!

friday cat

There’s always lots to be done:  calls to make, meetings to attend, and projects to wrap up. There are schedules to arrange, trips to plan, and conference calls to coordinate.  Presentations to line out, contracts to research and, and, and.

But.

Later today, when the sun starts to fade and I close my laptop and shut off my phone, there begins a bit of time that I like to call “purposeful nothingness.”

Sure there will be some cleaning and and some cooking this weekend but mostly? Mostly there will be vacancy.  There will be time … to just be.

Weekends don’t count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless.  ~Bill Watte

Are you able to purposefully “waste” time?

It’s time

It’s time for Purposeful Nothingness.

An absence of schedule.  Lack of obligation. No particular place to be.

Naps.

No socks, clocks or conference calls in sight.

Toes will wrinkle from hours in the pool and books will give evidence of wee ones’ splashes.

Finches will fatten at the feeders and squirrels will squander the sprinklers.

It’s time for summer nights under the stars, talking, laughing, singing, living.

It’s time for shared glances, twirly skirts, golf dates and date nights.

Every year, hubbs and I take a week off to do all of  the above …and this year?

It starts this afternoon! 🙂

And I am THIS happy about it! (google.images.com)
