The space between yes and no

Sometimes little nudges come from the most random places.   Today, this popped up in Facebook Memories ~ it was a passage I needed to read again and I thought you might, too:

“In the space between yes and no, there is a lifetime.  It’s the difference between the path you walk and one you leave behind; it’s the gap between who you thought you could be and who you really are; it’s the legroom for the lies you will tell yourself in the future.” ― Jodi Picoult.

5 Things I’m excited about today:

  1.  Road trip – tunes at the ready, coffee up!
  2.  In about a month our baby boy will be married; in < a month my sister arrives for the wedding 😀
  3.  We just got the news that another grandchild is on the way – oldest boy & his wife are expecting a baby in December 🙂
  4.  I’m taking my first golf lesson this week!
  5.  The days are longer, the nights are shorter and I do believe summer will be here soon!

And pie, always say YES to pie~

What lives in your space between yes and no?   What are you excited about today?

Don’t forget to live

So, like you, we’re busy.  Busy, busy, busy.  Work- busy. Kids-busy. Social life-busy.  One big bunch of busy buzzing bees.   And I don’t know about you, but I’m a little sick of how busy we are.  Just talking about it is getting boring.

46478-We-Make-Time-For-What-We-Truly-Want

Wah! I don’t have time …

Look around: it’s like a new badge to claim– can you multi-task, what are you missing to be here with me, what else is going on, what? What?  But what are we busy at? Being busy?

I’m not on call. But I feel like I am.  I’ve worked hard at keeping boundaries, doing the job, without being accessible 24/7.  But I still catch myself being one of those people checking emails, responding after hours, and feeling like I can’t ever get caught up. Like trying to stuff 10 pounds of potatoes into a 5 pound sack, the volume just never … slows.

So when I feel the margins of life closing in, I push back and re-assess. Sometimes it takes nothing more than the “mental” escape  a good book can bring. Other times, more drastic action is needed.   So with that, later today, I’m signing off. Shutting down. Hopping  up into the Jeep with my brown-eyed handsome man, cranking up the tunes and headed to points north.  I’m laughing till my sides hurt, kissing my honey, and living in the moment.

Road trip? Yes!

Make time in your day life for:

  1. Situations that make you laugh, including yourself
  2. People who make you smile
  3. Your favorite foods
  4. Music you want to sing along to
  5. Curling up with a book
  6. Loving on the one you love
  7. Friendship
  8. Good company and conversation
  9. Furry friends
  10. Joy

Why?

“In the midst of a busy life don’t forget to live.” ― Marty Rubin

And we might just play this game along the way:

Can you relate? When you feel your margins getting smaller, what do you adjust?

** Thanks to DM for gifting me with the “margins” reference — Now that I think of it, I always used to draw in mine. 🙂

Random February Friday Five

It’s Friday! It’s time for 5 Random thoughts from my corner of the world!

1.  On a regular basis I wake up in the night with at least 600 things running through my head.  Think I could remember them now?  Nope, not a one.

three am

2. Friday is to the week like bread is to butter.  Speaking of, made Hubbs his favorite casserole earlier this week:  “Poor Man’s Chop Suey” – he had plate after plate of it, with a side of bread and butter, and a big ole smile plastered across his face.  As much as he watches what he eats, when a meal like this “magically” appears, he plows in like he’s been clearing a forest all day with his bare hands. And the comments of appreciation thrown my way make my hair curl ~ somethings really are that easy.

3.  Heading out on a road trip today – yay!  The weather is cold and clear, there’s no snow in my future and I predict random song singing all the way to my meeting place. 🙂

4.  Hubbs and I were invited out for dinner tonight.  There’s something very nice about being on the receiving end of an invite.  Even if you don’t go, it’s just nice to be asked, you know?  But we’re going and I’m glad.  Whee!

5. There are many heart-wrenching causes out there in the “GoFundMe” world —  and, as much of a softie as I can be, I’ve yet to contribute to one. Guy Wolfe is a blogger I follow because of his sincere faith and beautiful writing -he’s served as an inspiration to me more than once when my world felt less than inspired.  He recently wrote of a tragic turn of events in his world – and the HOPE {Hold On Pain Ends} he’s experienced since.  I felt compelled to ask how could I help?    He told me and I did.  Would you?  More info here.

John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you…”

And how was your week? Do you wake with a “to-do” list at 3:00 a.m. that magically disappears in the morning?  Is there a favorite dish your spouse or loved ones just love?  Do you say yes to road trips as often as you can? Have you ever given money to someone’s “GoFundMe” site?   Are you the inviter or the invitee in social situations?

R5F – Pie

Random Five Friday – Five random stream-of-consciousness thoughts.  Go!

1.  It’s Friday! Supposed to hit mid 60’s F today. How can I not smile at the 2 of those statements?

2.  Golf. Hubbs runs his alumni golf league; earlier this week, oldest boy asked “Does Dad enjoy doing that, Mom?”  My response, “Not always… but he’s the one they all come to so he figured he might as well herd the cats.”  True story.  The first 2014 tee time is set for tomorrow morning and you’d think today was Christmas Eve.  Funny man.

3. Adventure. Had another road trip yesterday, and an opportunity to meet with elected officials, community leaders and local folks.  I may have said this before but I love this part of my job.  Why?  A. Well,  I get out of the office & away from my desk & phone. B.  I usually end up somewhere I’ve never visited before and C. I never know what I’ll get or who I’ll encounter.  Every time I go, I come back feeling like I’ve touched humanity all over again.

You wouldn't believe the stuff total strangers tell me.

4. Local. Going to new places means you’re free to drive right past chain restaurants and look for places like “The Pink Elephant” Diner along Michigan’s West Coast.   Here they serve breakfast all day, turkey dinner for lunch and pie. Lots and lots of pie.  Local Mom & Pop shops make me feel at home, even if I’m not.

5.  Pie.  It’s only 27 days till I’m home on the farm with Mom :).  This time, I’m asking for her “Flapper Pie” recipe. I know I can get it online (see link) but but I want her recipe.  Creamy, cool and delicious, it’s a delightful, happy pie from my prairie childhood and one to add to my repertoire.   Have you ever heard of it?

Oh so true!

Oh so true!

Happy Friday, peeps!

Pure Michigan

Today, I’m happy to have a road trip.

Today, I’m even happier I can pack a healthy lunch to take with me.

Today, I’m headed to Saginaw, Michigan and no, there’s no major highways in sight.

Nope, I chose the more rural route.

I know it will take longer as there’s only two lanes for most of the way.

But that’s OK with me.

Because today I’m heading out to see farms and fields and Amish bread stands.  Seeders and tillers and market gardens.  Local country stores and farm trucks headed for town.

Today, I’m heading out .. to Pure Michigan.

Where are you headed today?

It’s Friday and I am THIS happy about it!

image from google.images.com

It’s not been a difficult week just a tiring nail-biting watching baseball-oh wait I still have to go to work kind of a week.   Holy Moley I am glad that this is not my regular routine; I’d never make it.

It’s Friday and I’m off on a road trip for work this morning… yes it’s raining a bit (first rain this and we need it) but the fall colors are gorgeous, the smells are stupendous and my drive is mostly … country – yippee-skippy!!  Houses, farms, orchards and fields … here I come.

Tomorrow Hubbs can enjoy college football in his jams (Michigan: Michigan State at Noon) and later, our beloved Tigers head to Texas for game 6!!

I’m planning on cleaning and cooking … and a bit of yard work and maybe even a nap this weekend.  And a lot of baseball, hopefully.

.:.

How’s your weekend looking, now that you can nearly see it?
