Random Pulaski Friday!

It’s Random! It’s Friday! Here are 5 random Friday thoughts ~

1. In addition to today being smack-dab in the middle of a 19 day event known as Art-Prize (an urban, open art festival /contest where what the people think matters most) today marks the start of “Pulaski Days!Celebrating Polish heritage, this is a weekend-long event of kielbasa, pierogies, holubchi (cabbage rolls), beer and of course, lots and lots of Polkas.  Tonight we’ll meet up with friends at one of the Polish halls and eat, laugh and, of course, get our Polka on! I’ll check out the “art” next week – or not.

2. Took a road trip to points north Wednesday.  My meeting started early afternoon so I had time to meet my Father-in-Law for lunch first. Arriving at a restaurant filled with Seniors,  I spotted him at a table about as far from the door as you could sit.  It was the seat you take when you don’t mind everyone knowing you have yourself a lunch date.   It’s also the kind of place where people like to linger because the food is good, the wait staff is friendly and nearly everyone gets called “Honey” or “Sweetie,'” at least once. We enjoyed a tasty meal and meandering conversations and I couldn’t help but think of her, my late Mother-in-Law, and how much she’d have loved that moment.

3.  On Facebook, have you ever noticed that friends & family share recipes of really yummy/naughty foods …  at night?  Sometimes my morning FB feed is filled up with cheese bread, caramel cake and pie recipes.  Right after the posts on workouts.  Hmmm.

4.  Speaking of workouts, I think I own most of them. I get bored easily. There was a time I was running, but then my knees started hurting.  Then came yoga, which I still like, but have never mastered.  Walking bores me and Zumba … well that’s just an epic fail. The only program I’ve stuck with is this one:  Kettleworx.  I found it in the clearance rack (that could have been a sign …) and gave it a go.  I started with the smallest weight and worked up.  The instructor is corny and the editing isn’t great, but it’s a 20 minute weights workout with a slow-enough pace that I can actually .. f-o-l-l-o-w along.  And you know what? It’s working.  I am stronger – noticeably so – and my clothes are looser.   Hmmm.

5. And finally, I have made no secret of the fact that I’m a list maker.  Always have a list. Yes I never find money in a winter coat pocket .. I find a list.   And this little saying here hits way too close to home.You?

Time outs aren’t so bad after all

So, I’ve written about being stressed and as sick and tired as I am of feeling that way, I’m pretty sure you, dear readers, might be sick of hearing about it, too.

You see, sometimes, in the day-to-day race that is life, I can get so caught up on the merry-go-round that I no longer hear the music; all I can hear is noise. I can no longer see the intricate carvings of the horses or enjoy the lights because it all flies past me in the blur known as “get-it-done.”

When I stop feeling exhilarated and start feeling woozy, it’s time to stop the merry-go-round and get off.

And for that reason, I’ve taken two – count ‘em – two vacation days: tomorrow and Monday.  Call ’em mental health days, call ’em what you will – I’ve checked out.

I’ll make lists and I’ll ponder, I’ll putz and I’ll organize but … I’ll also sip coffee, catch up on your blogs, daydream and hang out with old dog. I’ll get in a run or two, I’ll accomplish a few things and ignore twice as much; I’ll dine with Hubbs and chat with the kids and maybe even sleep in … just a little. I’ll watch the World Series and chat on the phone with Mom and my cousin; I’ll cook and I’ll sing and I’ll visit with friends.  I’ll take four days to step away and be my very own battery charger.

And come Tuesday, when the Wurlitzer starts cranking out that old familiar tune, maybe I’ll smile the smile of the invigorated and not the one that’s frozen and spent.

Radio Silence from the Beastie

So, I’ve written about my Inner Lizard, the shrieking beastie who lives inside each of us and needles us whenever we stretch ourselves. The one who says: that’ll never fit, you can’t accomplish that, go back to the couch. Mine isn’t the voice of anyone but her, that Negative Nancy Naysayer who lurks within and dines on failures.

5 weeks ago, I started on the Couch25K running program and I’ve mentioned how much I’m enjoying myself and how good it feels to just be doing it.

5 weeks ago, I couldn’t run 60 seconds.  Last night, I ran 900 (15 minutes).

Here’s how the conversation went when the beastie showed herself yet again:

Me: I think I can really do this, it’s not that bad.
Her: Are you kidding me? You’re a rookie and the couch is calling …

Me: Man, that first run is always the toughest, my feet feel like lead.
Her: Yeah, you said that last time.

Me: Wow! 11 min down already!
Her: 19 to go, you’ll never make it.

Me: Who knew that running slow is harder than running fast?
Her: Running is hard period, are you sure you wouldn’t rather be on the couch?

Me: Wow! 22 min down!
Her: Can you hear your breathing? You sound like a sick cow!

Me: That last segment was tough, my legs are sure burning now.
Her: They’re burning ‘cause they’re about to give out.

Me: The sweat is pouring off me; I feel like I can do anything!
Her: You know you want to quit.

Me: Hey!  26 min down, time for my cool-down – HOOAH!
Her:        …. silence ….

Do it anyway

So, I’ve written about how eager I was to start the Couch25K plan, an 8 week program that gets you off the couch and running 3 miles in about 2 months. (download the free podcasts here).

What I haven’t written about is the transformation that is occurring.

Oh, there’s a wee part of me that whispers shh don’t talk about it yet, you’re only in week 3.  But there’s a stronger, louder, more powerful part of me that tells her to shut it.

Because here’s what I need to say:

I mustered up my courage and actually went into a running store. You know the kind: everyone in there is a 9′ tall gazelle with 3% body fat and knows what to do with the hydration stuff and anti chafing products sitting at the till.

Not me.

I ambled in, took a deep breath and let the athletic gal fitting me know that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.  She found me some new runners and let me try them out. And I did. I ran in the store.  Me. I know! And here’s the thing: I didn’t care who saw me.

Yes I still have my old tanks and sports bras and I haven’t invested in any new shorts or cute outfits. I run on a treadmill and the only one who sees my wardrobe is the 12-year-old dog who is partially deaf and near-sighted.

But the very best part is this: Everything, and I mean, everything – my job, my co-workers, my family, my ancient, arthritic dog, and even our neglected house have taken a backseat to this.

Why?

Because nothing I’ve ever purchased, tasted or experienced has ever made me feel as alive as this does. Nothing.  I love everything about it! I love the sweating (and I’m talking rivers of sweat).  I love the endurance and confidence I’m gaining. I’m loving the kick-a** way 30 minutes of this makes me feel. I love that moment that comes in the middle of a workout when my inner lizard harps that I can’t possibly finish; I love to silence her by pushing through anyway. I’m loving how well I sleep at night.  I love the “atta-girls” I get from the Hubbs and the pride I feel when I reach another milestone.

At 49, I’m loving that I can.
