Stop the story

My favorite local book store made the painful decision to close one of its locations.

It wasn’t a location I visited often because the reason they’re closing is the same reason I didn’t go there much.

Traffic.

You could turn in, but not out easily.

You cannot cross the street and drive straight to their lot, you have to turn right then cross three lanes of insane traffic.

I get a literary thrill from cozying up with a great read but I’m not risking my life for written adventures.

Schuler books, half off. Not going.

Schuler books, half off. Not going.

And I know I could save money and pick up some great reads by patronizing the sale.

But I’m not doing it. Call me foolish. Don’t care.

The ones combing through the deals are the same who’ve never popped in on a winter’s night, to peruse and ponder and delight in a beautiful brick-and-mortar store.    They’re like long-lost relatives picking through an estate sale, and I just don’t want to be part of it.

I’ll say good-bye from here.

“There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story.”  ― Frank Herbert

HA!

It’s been a crazy, busy week. My work world has cranked up and is back to full speed ahead; we’re working on projects and on lots of conference calls, doors are shut, heaters are on, lunches are packed from home.  I’m leaving earlier, staying later, and sometimes .. working here because of weather. But always, always, always bundling up and slogging through because … well, it’s winter.

But you know what?  I see the weekend … whoop!  And today, on my lunch break, the first one I’ve taken this week, I’m slipping off to my favorite local bookstore.   Can’t wait … I’m taking a stack of gently used books with me to sell back, adding that nominal amount to my Christmas gift card and treating myself to yet another round of literary delights.  As an added bonus, this store has a charming little cafe serving delicious quiches, salad, soups and more.  I’m feeling rather impish, just thinking about it!   It’s the little things sometimes, isn’t it?

I see the weekend!

Yippee Skippy Friday’s here!

What’s your Random 5-January edition look like?  Anything you’re feeling Yippee Skippy about? 🙂

My arms hurt

From an afternoon spent in the bookstore and what an excellent adventure it was! One afternoon last week I took some used books to a local book store; setting my books on the counter, I wandered off while the book lady perused my items.  I forgot to pick up a basket and instead carried a stack with me, hence the sore arms.  They elected to buy some books and pass on others and, in the end, I earned myself a sweet $28 store credit (sellers get 20% of the book’s value in cash or 30% in a store credit).

Well.

You know what comes next, right?

More books for me!  All totaled, I think I was in the store for 2 hours, but I really don’t know because I lost track of time.   Bookstores do that to me, but I digress.

I wandered. I read. I perused. I laughed and I relaxed.   But … the very best part was finding one older book that I’ve always wanted to read. I’d seen the movie years ago and it has disturbed and intrigued me ever since.

What is it?  “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood.

In the world of the near future, who will control women’s bodies?

In the Republic of Gilead, formerly the United States, far-right ideals have been carried to extremes in the mono-theocratic government. The resulting society is a feminist’s nightmare: women are strictly controlled, unable to have jobs or money (or read) and are assigned to various classes: the chaste, childless Wives; the housekeeping Marthas; and the reproductive Handmaids, who turn their offspring over to the “morally fit” Wives. The tale is told by Offred (read: “of Fred”), a Handmaid who recalls the past and tells how the chilling society came to be. This powerful, memorable novel is highly recommended for most libraries.  Source: Library Journal.

So, today, I can choose to watch the news and listen to politicians rant about contraceptive coverage, health insurance mandates, religious freedom, economic liberty, social issues and birth control.  Or I can pick up this book and read all about it.

One’s fiction, the other isn’t.  Which one’s scarier?

Now that I think about it, my head hurts, too.
