Random 5 – Conference calls, folding chairs and Hey Macarena !

I regularly think of random things.  That’s how this brain works – – in the car, at night, during conference calls …   Too much swirling around to stop randomly weird things from popping in & making themselves at home.

1 )  Weekends .. when I have no deadlines and no reasons not to sleep in .. I don’t.  Nope.  I’m awake early, rolling around, flipping/flopping till finally I just fling the blankets off and stomp to the coffee pot ~  I see the early clock and sigh because this is the stuff weekday dreams are made of … but no, not me.  I’m up.  Up!

2 ) I read this quote recently and claimed it:

I hope to arrive at my death, late, in love, and a little drunk.  ~Atticus

well if that doesn’t say it all!

3 ) Three weeks ago I went shopping for a reclining beach chair – the kind you can use in your backyard or at the beach (the one I never go to unless company is in town).  So I set it up in on the patio, stack my books and an Arnie Palmer then haul out 75+ sun block, a fly swatter & a water spray bottle.  I lay down a towel and carefully climb on in ~ instantly the thing folds and I am trapped in it like a finger in a clam shell.  What the?  I carefully get out, adjust the settings and give it another go.  Klang – I’m folded up in the stupid thing like yesterday’s burrito.   Hubbs, leaving for golf, steps out to find me tangled up and sputtering.  He gently asks if all is well?  I smile, say nothing, and stomp past him with the folded chair over my shoulder and proceed to hoist it into the trash, stomp back, drag two patio chairs together and affix myself between them.  He smiles and waves good-bye (smart man).    Yesterday I went looking look for a replacement — well now that SCHOOL SUPPLIES are out …….. the 2-3 beach chairs left have been relegated to the back corner with the 50%-off garden supplies.  It’s mid July.  What happened?

the crappy one was like this but not as nice

4 )  They tend to come in cycles but lately there’s been an influx of annoying recorded spam phone calls to our house phone — “Hi! This is Tiffany from blah-blah-blah services” (insert the words travel, credit card, rewards, cruise ship where I had the words blah-blah-blah).   I like to answer and, while the recording is going start talking gibberish.  Calls end abruptly and my stress wanes. Highly recommend it.  🙂

5 )  We’re about to start a months-long project and with it comes weekly check-in calls ~ time to break out the  Bingo card:

How about you?  What have you shopped for lately that was suddenly “out of season?”  Notice an influx of spam phone calls?  Ever play conference call Bingo?

Day 14 – Hello Friend

Today marks 2 weeks that I’ve been off work ~ two whole weeks!  Yes I’ve worked some, I have to or what will greet me on my return will resemble an avalanche. But two weeks!  Here are a few things learned over this delicious break:

1. The power of sleep. I’ve gained a new appreciation for sleep’s ability to restore & renew.  With no schedule I’ve slept longer, deeper and better in the past 10 days then over the past 365.   I can see sleep’s gifts in my face -lines softened, bags retreated and  even my hair looks healthier.

2. The comfort of quiet.   I’ve resisted the urge to fill my days with “to-dos” and have perfected enjoying my chair, sipping coffee and reading books.  The T.V. has stayed off; the phone is silent.  Chores and tasks remain and Jimmy Cracked Corn ’cause I don’t care!

This is only half of my haul!

This is only half of my book haul!

3. Enjoying real foods when actually hungry.  Not being on a schedule means that I don’t eat lunch because it’s noon; I wait until I’m hungry and sometimes that means lunch is at 2:00 p.m. instead.  I’ve enjoyed my Nutribullet smoothies, fresh pears, clementine oranges, old-fashioned oatmeal, and Greek Yoghurt throughout the course of the day ~ and felt lighter, energized and satiated.  There’s something to this that I plan to continue.

4. Taking a break from everyone else. Other than my immediate family I’ve not seen anyone else for two whole weeks!  We have a 90th birthday party to attend on Saturday.  Three weeks ago this would have felt like one more event shoe-horned into an over-scheduled schedule ~ today I find myself looking forward to it.

5. Understanding .. or not. A work colleague expressed disbelief at my long winter’s break and dismay that I wasn’t getting on a plane to go “somewhere.” To her, time off is not time off unless you’re traveling to some exotic destination.  I frustrated myself trying to explain my stance to a person who is never going to get it and ended the conversation with this, “because I need it.”  And there it is, folks.

“Never forget that once upon a time, in an unguarded moment, you recognized yourself as a friend.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert

Random Five Friday, again

Yep, it’s back. Random Five Friday.  Why? It’s random – it’s easy – it’s fun.  Here we go.

1. Portobello mushrooms.  Why haven’t I tried these before now? Oh, they’ve been around, but I’d poo-poohed them as new age/hippie-dippy food. Not so, my friends.  Sauteed with Bok Choy & other veggies + a splash of teriyaki sauce = a chewy, crunchy and tasty dinner. Yum.

... delish

… These are regular mushrooms; I got wise AFTER this dish was made

2.  Hair.  When I get up every day, one side of my hair looks like it went to a party, partied too hard, and fell into bed.  The other side looks like it stayed in, balanced the budget, and read books.  And … the sides take turns. I’d like to know what this is all about.

3. Daylight.  There’s more of it. We’ve turned the corner, peeps.  When I leave the office at night, it’s not as dark as it was.   Driving home in twilight feels like we’re emerging from winter’s tunnel.    Ahh.

4. Permission.  My regular readers know that I ventured off to my favorite bookstore last week and emerged with a bag of delights.  I started reading a highly acclaimed book the next day and … meh.. I just couldn’t get into it. I either wasn’t in the mood or the story simply wasn’t that compelling.  I put the book back in the bag and chose another.  It was that easy and it’s taken me 50 years to be OK with doing so.

getting older has its advantages :)

5. Something I’ve noticed lately is how much we talk about sleeping. It’s a safe topic, one you can reference at the water cooler, “Didn’t get my rest last night” or “Boy, I slept great last night.” There’s hardly ever an in-between.

Then I read this and thought … man, this is it.  This, my friends,  is truth:

I invite you to join me in something I’m calling the Adequate-Sleep Life-Enhancing Experimental Project (ASLEEP).
The requirements for membership are simple: we sleep until we aren’t tired, whenever possible. And I mean WHENEVER POSSIBLE, as in, if you show up at your best friend’s wedding tired, you take a pillow and sleep through the ceremony. Better yet, don’t show. Man up. Stay in bed. – Martha Beck

paws up!

How about you? Discovered any delights lately? Does your hair travel to far-off adventures without you? Are you seeing more daylight in your days?  What have you given yourself permission to do?   When’s the last time you felt rested?

On Sleep

During the week, on these crisp autumn mornings of late, I dream of sleep.

I dream of sleep that lingers and languishes, the kind where dreams slip in and dance across your thoughts. Sleep that soothes and restores. The kind that’s not compartmentalized.

But .. the weekend arrives and I find myself up with the birds. Every. Single. Time.

As much as I try to sleep in, I just can’t seem to do it.

Occasionally, a nap finds its way to me and that offsets the weariness. But in the day-to-day craziness that is my work world right now, sleep is a commodity I fiercely protect.  The problem is that if I go to bed too early, I wake up far too early also. If I go to bed too late, I feel the grog all day long.  Ugh!

So, again today, I was up and at ’em bright & early – long before the sun had appeared.  Laundry – done.  Dishes – done.  Soon, we’re off to brunch with my Father-in-Law & Aunts/Uncles, we’ll stop stop at the grocery store for a few essentials and then later tonight comes a Halloween Party – yeah!

Maybe I’ll sleep in tomorrow. 🙂  But then again, probably not.

What’s your sleep routine? Are you a weekend early bird like me? Do you have a love/hate relationship with your alarm clock?  Have you ever day-dreamed about sleep?
