Random 5 Friday – Karma and Snow

It’s Friday! It’s time for 5 Random thoughts! Here we go!

1. Remember last Friday when I referenced how pitiful Hubbs was with his cold? Yeah, I should not have done that. About noon it hit me – a tightening between the shoulder blades – and with hot eyes and hurting everything, I headed for home. Not before I stopped for essentials like groceries, Puffs and dinner.  And yes I felt the wheels of the Karma bus back right on over me.

2. Sorting through some stuff lately, I came across my hot rollers.   Bear in mind I have naturally curly hair. Like, really curly. Holds a curl for days.  I’ve had the rollers since college, they still work, and every once in a while I’ll roll my hair just to see what happens.   If I’m feeling adventurous I’ll add hair spray and double it in size.   I can see myself doing this for years and years and years.    No idea why.

3. Lately I’ve been enjoying TV shows that demonstrate decorating on a budget. You see I have no ability in the home decor  department.  That gene skipped me.  No, I was too busy riding my pony and pretending to be “Billy Jack  than be caught inside doing artsy stuff. So it was not a proud moment when I realized that most of the things we own are on Decorators “do not do” list.   Yep, decorating wise, I need help and lots of it.

4.   I like making lists and checking things off so, generally speaking, I don’t procrastinate.  But this was funny!

5.  All in all, it was a bit of a rough week and I’m glad Friday is here.  None of us felt great, it was -something zero outside every day and we got pounded with snow.  Case in point, one day it took 65 min. to drive 7 miles to the office.   No snowmen yet, but I can see why things like this could happen:

And how was your week? What styling aids have you owned or used for 30+ years?  Please tell me you have silk plants, too!

R5F – not new, just more

Random 5 Friday! The quickest round of thoughts this ole brain can conjure up all week. Ready?  Here we go!

1. I heard recently that its not drinking that makes people gain weight, it’s the food choices that inevitably follow.  I think the same could be said for exercise.  I’ve been working out regularly for about 6 weeks now and my appetite afterwards envies that of a Badger.   Step away from the hungry lady.

touch my food, I dare ya!

2.  How is it nearly May? How?  We had snow in MI this week.  The weather people like to taunt viewers with stats like this:  “Today is the 188th day since our first snowfall!” And they smile as they say it.  How do they sleep at night?

3. Every year I seem to develop new sayings that describe certain situations or people.  A few years ago it was, “Not for you.” This year, after witnessing continued lunacy from more than one individual, it’s evolved to, “It’s not new, it’s just more.”  Think about a person whose behavior is disruptive in your life.  Is it new or is it … just more.  Gah!

4.  Stopped last night to complete the weekend grocery run.  Why? It’s not storming, no, but there’s something about completing that one little chore that makes me wonderfully happy. I can stay home all weekend if I want to — or not  — but that chore is done like dinner.  Whoop!!

5. 2 weeks from now, I’ll be happily ensconced at my Mother’s house, sipping tea, eating pie, talking politics, catching up on local doings.  To say I’m looking forward to it would be an understatement.   I’ll be smiling like a kitty on a cushion!

happy cat

Who comes to mind when you hear, “It’s not new, it’s just more.”  Do you ever do your chores in advance?   Does exercise turn you into a rabid wolverine?  Do tell! Happy Friday, peeps.

ha!

ha!

How it’s supposed to be

Sometimes, life doesn’t go as planned.  Things shift and the storms of life bear down on us.

Yesterday afternoon, as I checked my flight for this morning’s trip to D.C. I reached a recording that said, “This flight has been cancelled. Please call back at a later time. Click.”

Here comes "Titan"

Here comes “Titan”

No call. No text. Nothing.

Next I dialed the Travel Agency.  Busy. Busy. Busy.

Hmm, I thought.

Hubbs asked, “What are you going to do?”

I replied, “Wait it out.” Then I smiled and gave thanks that at least I found out when I did, while tucked inside and cozy, and not stranded at the airport with luggage and 200 others.

Late last night, an email from the airline arrived stating I’d been re-booked on a later flight today.  It’s storming and icy in D.C. and, honestly, I kinda doubt this flight takes off either.  But we’ll see.

So this morning, I’ll finish packing and readying myself and most importantly… I’ll adjust the picture in my head of how it’s supposed to be.

Random Five Frrriday

Brr, it’s cold.

this morning in West Michigan

Jan 3rd 2014 in West Michigan

My random Five Frrriday (emphasis on my chattering teeth) are:

1) You know you’re getting used to it when Hubbs says, “but look, the high Saturday is 30” with a smile.  We’d talked about how we’d most likely stay in all weekend, not meet friends for drinks & dinner, and skip the cold.   In Michigan, 30F is an “acceptable” temperature to venture out in, provided you do the venturing late-afternoon, early evening! 🙂

2) 2nd day back to work — but the truth is, I worked a bit over vacation.  I did that for me – to keep up on things & to clean out the ever-growing inbox.  Finally got it down to ~400 instead of 1,000.  The volume these days … insanity.

3) Last year, Uncle Mac & Aunt Janet told me about a new way of eating they’d adopted and how they’d collectively lost weight & felt better. Both had battled cancer and both felt bloated from the treatments and life in general.  They called it the “beans & greens” plan but it’s better known as “Eat to Live” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman.  I’ve had the book for a while .. and I know what do to, I just wasn’t doing it.  New Year’s day, while Hubbs enjoyed football and naughty food, I took it easy and ate my greens. And my fruit. And some more greens.  Did the same yesterday.  Down 3lbs today.  3 lbs in 2 days!     I am not sure if I will  do this full-time but I do think I could most times; I love veggies and fruit and I don’t mind (certain) beans.  I can live with having meat only a couple of times a week.  And who knew that Romaine has nearly as much protein as a steak?   Read more here.

4) Devoured a couple of books over Christmas break and now I feel like I’m in wandering lost through a canyon … anyone else feel like that when a good story ends? Not having a good book ready gives me anxiety.  Mom and I talked about this very thing on New Year’s Day and she gave me the best compliment, “You know, of all my kids, you’re the only one who reads like me; have you ever just wanted to live in a bookstore?”   Smile.

And #5 is below.

It's been 6 months. I still miss him.

And so with that, I’ll leave you with this silly picture I found this weekend. Rest in peace, silly old dog.
